The Olympics have always been used as a fascist spectacle, never more evident than this year with so-called Communist China, and so-called democratic Russia using the event to consolidate the power and legitimacy of their totalitarian regimes. From the goose stepping military parade to the ant-like humans, the opening ceremony was an advertisement for totalitarianism. It was no coincidence Russia used the moment to invade Georgia. Note the lack of any pretense to "precision strikes" or any sop of a concern to "collateral damage" in that aggression.

Now we have our own american network shilling on behalf of fascists to make a buck back for covering this ****-fest.

Time for america to check out of the "olympics" and send the creepy IOC packing.

We've had enough totalitarian propaganda, individuals at the service of the "state". The modern version of the Olympics was the product of the fascist moment in European history, and we should do away with this crap.

I thought it was awe-inspiring and beautiful. A great testament to how working together, humans can achieve some beautiful art and pageantry.

I wouldn't blame the olympics for the Russian-Georgia war or for China's dismal, but improving human rights record. Go to the source for that.

Please explain your contention that the "modern version of the Olympics was the product of the fascist moment in European history". How can that be when it involves all the nations of the world getting together in one place to meet and compete? Is the UN fascist? Are World's Fairs fascist? Maybe we should just all isolate ourselves in our caves and never get together (like an internet forum!).

The Olympics Opening Ceremony was beautiful, the best I've seen in my life, and the hundreds of people in a bar I saw it with from over a dozen countries all agreed.

I think Russia is going a bit strong on Georgia ... but if Georgia had stayed in their own territory there would be no conflict right now. Georgia is looking for sympathy ... showing dead civilians and the like ...

    But why did they invade?
Perhaps they invaded thinking Russia would stand pat until the Olympics were over? I would not paint russia as the lone bad guy here ... certainly they are not human rights specialists but there's more to that tale.

What we understand to be the "Olympics": The torch, the Olympic rings, the Olympic village, the mass display of propaganda, was a creation of the Nazis in the lead up to 1936.

It was very impressive then, too.

Here again we have the IOC complicit in allowing the Chinese government to "impress" the world with their pageantry. Look behind the mask.

As for the "UN" and the "world's fair", those are different discussions.

Frankly, it's no surprise people think the ceremony was beautiful. Staged propaganda to impress the masses is part and parcel of totalitarian regimes.

I'd be more impressed it they allowed freedom of speech, like we are permitted on the "message boards" you seem to mock. But the people of China are not even permitted that freedom. Big Brother is watching.

Better to be a free man in a cave than a slave in a stadium.

South Ossetia is recognized by the entire world community as part of Georgia. I question the circumstances as reported. OTOH, The invasion of Georgia by the Russians mirrors the same thing the Bolsheviks did in 1921, under the pretense of protecting the Ossetians from Georgian aggression. I find it interesting that the Russians had so much combat power at hand moments after the supposed "invasion" of South ossetia by georgia.

I also find the timing, Aug 8, the opening day of the Olympics, as odd for a reactive operation, as the Russians are portraying it.

It seems to me the Russians chose the time of this operation to capture the full attention of the world, and to make a point of their own growing strength.

The fog of war prevails and we'll have to wait and see what the facts on the ground actually were. But from a distance it looks like the classic "Sudetenland" pretense.

    Really? That stuff wasn't in LA in 1932? Or the 1928, 1924, 1920, 1912, 1908, 1904, 1900, 1896 Olympics?

There is something fascistic about, and it's unfortunate how nationalistic it sometimes becomes. The Chinese have gone all out in that regard, almost as bad as the Germans. (But, there's no denying their opening ceremony was very beautiful.) Some countries put on a rather fascistic show, but others don't. I think the US hosted Olympics, for instance, were much more about sports than any form of ethnic superiority.

Russia was building up troops along the border for months under the pretext of military training exercises. Georgia had protested such activity earlier, I believe, not that it did them a lot of good. Given the history of the region and Putin's obvious ambitions for Russia to return to superpower status, I am beginning to doubt the veracity of the reports claiming Georgia "invaded" South Ossetia, which as far as I'm concerned, is not a valid reason to send military forces across the border of a sovereign nation anyway. While, given the tensions between the Georgian government, which is highly nationalistic, and the South Ossetians, who are essentially Russian, an attempt at ethnic cleansing and the elimination of South Ossetia's autonomy by Georgia wouldn't surprise me, I really am starting to doubt that's what actually happened.

Let's just watch how weak the UN security counsel is. Russia wanted that territory back and wants to expand it's resources and is using this break away territory as an excuse. Isn't this like Iraq invading Kuwait? My predition is Russia is going to absorb the territory and most likely Georgia.

When this broke, my first thought was, with the dissolution of Chechnya's government some years ago by Putin, and the strategic value of Georgia, that Putin is making a grab for much more than that. I think he wants to reconstruct the old Soviet union and expand it, and return Russia to superpower status.

I'm thinking the same thing and who is honestly going to stop him? certainly not the UN. Maybe Nato or the European Union, but this is going to get real sticky.

I believe we are coming upon bad times with Iran and now Russia appears to be lusting for power. We are seeing the next evolution in greed for world power.

Pony if you're going to keep making 1936 comparisons I'd be more worried about the United States or Russia invading other countries. The US is on the brink of attacking Iran, after Iraq and Afghanistan, so if anyone has been an aggressor it has been us. Also, Russia is much more of a threat than China. Look at the history of China, they are too busy selling shoes and t-shirts and dealing with their own internal problems, than trying to create military hegemony (like the US has been and hopes to continue doing). Back when China was a major player they shut themselves off from the world instead of tried to invade/mold/interfere with it.

Without the United States and its "hegemony" the world would be governed by totalitarian states who place no value on individual freedom. Whatever liberty exists in the world would be snuffed out in short order. Our "hegemony" is a bulwark against darkness. It baffles me why Americans, raised in this country, do not understand that. People really need to deprogram themselves and drop this radical chic. I blame our University system, where so many whackos found shelter after their beer hall putsch failed in 1968.

I'd say Israel is on the brink with Iran. Now the US role will soon to be discovered.

Well said young man, the American University System practically ruined two of my grandchildren until their old fashioned American Commonsense kicked in and saved them from turning into Anti American, Blame America Jerks.

    America:
They all hate us but they all want to live here, they sneak in but they never sneak out.

"Dirty American Go Home" pssstt "and take me with you"
