While I do not want to be another person to nit pick and look for negatives after a nice win, I am starting to question Wilhite's ability.

It seemed to me that in the Colt's game, Manning found the weak link in our secondary... Wilhite.

Manning seemingly picked on him all night and regularly abused the kid. Then in the Jets game, it seemed as though to me that Wilhite was once again getting beat with somewhat regularity when Sanchez wasn't throwing int's to Bodden or getting hit.

Am I crazy here or is Wilhite reminding anyone else of a certain Eagle CB who is now on IR?

Our defense gives up 26 total yards in a half, and one of the CBs is getting picked on?

Manning "picked on" wilhite because he was in single coverage more than anyone else.

I share your concern. For the life of me, I can't figure out why Butler is not starting in his place. Butler has much more ability and far greater upside than Wilhite. Wilhite is a tough, gritty kid, but Butler is a 'baller' who can and will only get better the more he plays. I don't understand why Wilhite is starting ahead of Butler.

I would also like to see Butler start over Wilhite. I think Butler and Bodden are our best CB combo.

With that in mind, I don't see a problem with Wilhite. His coverage as been good. Both of the Manning to Wayne TD passes were perfect throws, with Wilhite having pretty good coverage. Hard to fault him just because one of the best combos in the NFL execute to perfection.

I wanted to echo what mayo said. While I think Butler has greater upside, what I've noticed with Wilhite is that he's usually in good position. That is, he's not getting absolutely torched like Duane Starks or Deltha O'Neal. It's strange because, to me, he always seems to have pretty tight coverage, but more recently Manning and yesterday Sanchez managed to complete some great passes into a very small window.

I'm not sure if it's a technique issue, or what. But that gives me confidence that he hasn't been "exposed" -- just more bad luck, if anything else.

Even Sanchez's TD to Cotchery over Wilhite was pretty much a perfect throw, where Wilhite had perfect coverage.

The way the NFL passing/defensive rules are built, no CB, no matter how good, is going to beat his WR every play. Wilhite is winning most of the time. Thats VERY good.

BB tends to be pretty cautious with rookies (Mayo excluded, but he was a top 10 pick). I think even as well as Butler is playing, it's smart to continue limiting his plays right now to avoid the rookie wall and let him learn a little more methodically (as opposed to just throwing him to the wolves).

Wilhite may not be as good, but he's probably better conditioned and more learned in the system. My guess is by seasons end and in the playoffs, if Butler continues to improve, he'll be starting over Wilhite all the time, and we'll be more balanced for the approach.

    Just a theory though.

Early in the year we had a continuous 4 man rotation at CB which was actually a thread I posted a few weeks ago but it seems we have since done less with that,I liked the idea but it seems we are going to Wilhite more than mixing it up

Wilhite had a bad game against the Colts (but also had a pick which should have put the game away). Most of the times he's been burnt its been because of a perfectly thrown pass. Not saying he's a stud but he is much better than Hobbs and O'neal. At least he isn't trailing recievers by 5 yards every time there's a completion.

Besides, later in the Jets game his coverage set up one of Bodden's picks

His coverage set up 2 of Bodden's picks, actually.

1.) A comparison to Hobbs should not be looked at as a negative. Hobbs was a good cornerback for the Patriots.

2.) Wilhite has beaten out the higher drafted CB from his same draft class. I'm not one who's going to start any Wilhite bandwagon, but he's been adequate in the current system.

3.) With the offense the Patriots will be facing this week, I think it's safe to say that Butler will be on the field a lot.

Honestly, the only ones who get exposed each week are the fans posting here.

I wouldn't call getting beat by perfectly thrown passes, despite being in position, "exposed". I would call it flawless accuracy and execution by the opposing QB.

The easiest way to expose a CB is for the opposong QB to complete EIGHT throws during the entire game.

Since the completions are so rare, we can see and cherish each of them and debate till eternity.

I would remind the thread that a QB who compltes 50% of their passes is considered a bust.

no you're not crazy but its not a recent trend either. I have not liked his play from the start of the season and have also wondered why he gets so many reps. That td pass to Cotchery (?) was a beauty though and I'm not sure how he could have defended it so I cut him some slack on that one. Maybe he's improved a tad as I did not notice him much otherwise which is usually a good thing for a CB.

I think Wilhite is solid if not spectacular, and he is improving. Easily a great 4th rd pick. If he was that weak he would have had a lot more help with Wayne, instead, the defense doubled the TE all day. No problem with Wilhite here.

Wilhite is a fine QB. He is better than Hobbs. He is usually in position and has speed. He is in his second year and is still learning. He could get better. Bodden, Butler, and Wilhite for the future looks bright. We have Wheatley whos isn't wack either. If we extend McG then our secondary would be mega sexy

re: The lousy corner thread ( Wilhite & Bodden0 merged

    we cant hate on wilhite....

if order to complete a pass his direction, the throw and catch have to be perfect...otherwise its a pick/deflection/drop

hes ALWAYS right on his man

and wasnt wilhite the one covering wayne in the Indy game? if so, its not so much as manning picking on him, as it is throwing to his only proven WR

or maybe it has to do with bodden having shutdown moments in games?

either way, dont blame wilhite, the catches completed against him very few cb's in this league would be able to defend

re: The lousy corner thread ( Wilhite & Bodden0 merged

I think Butler should start ahead of wilhite but i really, really like wilhites tight coverage. The only thing Butler has on wilhite is that he contests the ball much better. For example, the td reception that cotchery caught was a nicely thrown ball but wilhite got his head turned around and did a horrible job at swatting the ball away when he seemed to be in a perfect position. If butler had been in that position and got his head turned around in time like wilhite did he most likely would have swatted the ball away. Keep in mind that around draft time, butler was praised for how good his vertical jump was.
