Well, I was going to do it differently this year, and put a value on each player, but in the interest of space, which is already going to be tight, I removed the player if he's expected to be long gone by the time I have him graded. For instance, I had both Maualuga and Stafford in the fourth round. Therefore, they won't show up here. Which brings me to point #2 -- this is a Patriots-specific board. There's many more players than usual (~220 compared to ~75 last year), but most would be in the late 7th-UDFA category. Here goes:

The TCU defense took a hit on your board I see.

Very nice. A lot of interesting groupings.

If this is Belichick's board, he should be looking for partner's to trade down.

Teams have a value board, ranking all the players that they are interested in. I would suspect that some recognition of need is included in these values. Chararacter issues affect rankings. How a player fits in to schemes is important. Many players high on other folk's boards are not included. As Heat says, he demotes them so much that he knows that they will be gone by the time the ranking comes up.
=====================================
HOW TO USE VALUE BOARDS

1-24
According to heat, we have interest in only five players as the draft unfolds. Depending on ranking, we might trade up if we fear not getting any of our 5 at 23 if the value is there for the trade, we might wait and pick, we might trade down given that all our guys are gone, or we might "reach" a bit and draft someone from the 25-40 list. we also could trade our pick into next year. These decisions would get made as each pick is made in the draft.

For example, if Monroe, J. Smith, Raji and Curry are all chosen in the top 10 (as is likely), then Belichick would look at his value for Jenkins and consider how high he would be willing to trade up and get on the phone.
==========================
Personally, I don't agree with heat's indication that only 11 players may be worth a #23 or #34 to us. Since the ranking is 25-40, presumably a couple of the players wouldn't even be worth a 34. However, he certainly could be right. If he is, look for us to move our 23rd or perhaps 34th into next year and choose one of the 11.

how do you go about reading this thing and understanding what you are talking about? thanks

DH44, I'm really being objective because I understand that any player that I really like, even though a good fit, has a less than 20% chance of actually beign drafted by the Patriots. Then they become the enemy when they are drafted by another team.

Having siad that, please explain how you have left Clay Matthews or even Brian Cushing off your board.

I refer you to my opening statement. I'm working on my vertical stack now, which makes me aware that I have to adjust this one somewhat.

Well, I was going to do it differently this year, and put a value on each player, but in the interest of space, which is already going to be tight, I removed the player if he's expected to be long gone by the time I have him graded. For instance, I had both Maualuga and Stafford in the fourth round.

Their seventh round grades remove them from consideration.

Further thoughts on this, from anyone, given what has been said and speculated in the past week by scouts, coaches, et al?

Well, after putting together the vertical sort, I've realized that this one isn't quite right. However, I wasn't planning on indulging my ego and posting a new one. If it's useful, I will tomorrow, though.

Until draft boards, and draft prognosticators and "experts" are able and willing to rate players in the manner done below, their rankings are misleading.

It doesn't matter where a college player ranks against other players coming out of the draft.

What matters is where a college player ranks against current NFL talent that costs roughly the same amount of money.
