OK, so here's a better proposal: with 15 seconds or less on the game clock, only players on the field may call a timeout, not a coach on the sidelines.

The offense will see that a defensive player is calling TO and not run the play, thus eliminating the risk of injury. There's also the sportsmanship issue - defensive players on the field will be less likely to try and hose the guys lining up across from them with truly weak-sauce stuff. On the other hand, if they need to call TO legitimately (or even to ice the kicker), they still can. It's just that the coach, 75 feet away, can't do it from the sidelines at the last possible second.

Sound like a better proposal?

Heres an even better proposal:

Allow last second FG try with a timeout by anyone. If the defense is not good enough to keep a team away from FG range at the most crucial time...

I guess. Although use of timeouts in game ending situations is usually not something that is delegated to players without instruction from the sideline. What if the only person who sees that the defense has 12 men on the field is on the sideline? It seems totally wrong to have a rule that doesn't allow a coach to call a time out in this situation to avoid a penalty. This is why we give teams time outs. And if a coach has properly preserved a time out until the end of the game, it would be unfair not to let him use it.

I guess what I'm saying is that I just don't see a way to construct the new "rule" in a way that avoids entirely legitimate uses of time outs. I guess you could give the ref discretion to decide whether to allow the time out, but I can see some crappy scenarios there too.

I guess I hate the practice but I'm just not sure what to do about it in a way that doesn't create a worse problem. I would hate it if a game were decided because a coach tried to use a time out he had carefully preserved (maybe he didn't make a challenge that was close because he didn't want to use up a time out) for a legitimate reason (like seeing 12 men on the field or that a proposed field goal might be a fake) and was denied.

Now, I should say, I would be completely happy with getting rid of the time out completely. I hate time outs, in all sports. Nobody ever agrees with me on this, but I think they are stupid and mostly designed to get more advertising in. Soccer is boring. But at least there's no time out. If the other team gets momentum in soccer, you know what happens? You LOSE. No falling out of bounds time out. No time out to stop the clock. No time out to ice the kicker. No time out to avoid a penalty. Screw it. Play 60 minutes and go home.

Re: The last second timeout before a FG try at the end of the game -For it or Against

it makes it gimmicky, if they have 3 timeouts at the end of the game, they could make him kick it 4 times... are you kidding me?
they need to find a way to fix it, or at the end of every close game, you will see the kicker kicking it 2,3, or 4 times.. and what happens when someone gets hurt?

actually your wrong you can't call 2 consecutive TO's. For that purpose
