The Injury Excuse and Depth

Most of these type of discussions are entertaining but not that enlightening.

There is almost always a distinct lack of relativity - ie how does our depth compare to divisional/conference rivals?

You think many teams could afford to lose players of the caliber of Mayo and AD and not find their replacements a pretty severe downgrade?

The Steelrs may well have won the big prize last year, but their O-line is poor and so is its depth (little has been done to rectify this issue).

The Jets have very little depth or talent at WR.

What do the Bills have of note on the offensive line?

Its simply not possible to have top notch talent backed up by further high level talent across the board.

Thats why having a coach like Belichick allows us to scheme our way around these issues.

Do you realize how many QBs are tried and found wanting by teams in search of a QB that can win more games than he loses? Believe me it is lots! Teams can go decades without locating one. And yet you cavalierly dismiss a now proven Matt Cassel, in favor of yet another untried prospect Kevin O'Connell.

Now I will admit that the Patriots were perhaps wise to invest in a QB in the late third round, even though I was sure they were going to pick Red Bryant the Texas A&M NT to provide a backup to Wilfork.

In retrospect, if Kevin had come out this past draft, he would have gone in the First round before either Sanchez or Freeman. That still doesn't meqan he will succeed, merely that he has the athletic talent. But once again, 90% of QB play is done between the ears. Smarts, leadership and POISE are where you find them. They are intangibles, that can only be scouted completely differently, by someone. Someone Without a stop watch.
