Mankins was probably the most shocking but it did not send ripples through the media because no one knew anything about him.

I think that the most entertaining shocker was Richard Seymour with his "only" 1-2 sacks in his final year at UGA....I loved how Borges and rest of the DBags in the media flipped out.

The next greatest shock was passing on Dez Bryant twice and taking McCourty. It was hilarious to hear Borges and Callahan and Felger rip on BB for the McCourty pick. Those mediots actually took what BB said about McCourty literally; i.e. he was a special teams ace and then they used the red herring about the special team ability to destroy BB for wasting a first on a special teams specialists. It was great and the mediots never got around to actually watching McCourty play and seemed surprised that he was the number one starting CB.

Trading up for Graham.

Actually, the mediots ~ and they ARE amazingly stupid ~ did NOT take him literally: All that Coach Bill said was that one of the appeals was than Devin could play on all 4 Downs. I still cannot FATHOM how they interpreted that to mean that he was a Special Teams Specialist, but somehow they managed.

Good idea for a Thread, Fred.

Seymour, of course, was a good choice, as were Mankins and McCourty.

I like the inclusion of Graham: I was VERY unhappy with that, and while I like Graham, it KILLS me ~ as a FANATICAL advocate of spending early and often on Top Shelf Grizzlies ~ that we could've scooped up Andre Gurode @ #32, and held on to our 3rd and 7th Rounders.

Local scribes and sports talk radio hosts read the so-called draft experts just as most posters do. It was common knowledge that one of the experts (Mayock) said McCourty may be the best ST player in the draft -- end of selective memory. What the local media chose not to remember was the rest of Mayock's accurate description -- here's his full quote:

"He might be the best special-teams value in the draft in addition to being a potential starting corner," NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said prior to the NFL draft. "He's a gunner and a jammer, and he's a return guy. I think he could fit in quickly in the nickel package. He's a very, very physical defensive back. Most people have him going in the second round, but he could be a legitimate late first-round pick."
Patriots agree to deal with Devin McCourty | National Football Post

OTG, I can't quite agree that the media is "stupid", but will say their negativity is choice.

Good point!! I'm more than happy to ease off on that statement a bit: In my view, the MAJORITY of the media are clowns who command very little judgment, objectivity, or even, all too often, a real grasp of the Game...but there are a few rare exceptions.

For my money, it's probably Ben Watson.
