Edge at QB, coaching edge, and edge at WR.

    Running game: push.

TE: Push except for depth, and then edge.

    Defenses: Push at worst.

    STs: Push at best.

    Preparation time: edge

On paper it seems like a simple selection.

Ah, but that's what Bears fans said right before their game with the Dolphins in 1985. Still, if the Pats go 4-5 wide, how does Dallas attack they way they like to attack with only 4 guys? They do have a very good attacking defense but if you force some of them to cover, I think you see a remarkably vulnerable situation for them. I think that this is Dallas' Achilles Heel: Coverage of lots of good WRs and TEs and RBs. If they try blitzing they will not fool anybody, and they will pay the price. So they won't try to blitz, unless Son of Bum is out of his gourd. He might be. He'll have to learn the hard way.

If Maroney is not 100% I might give the Cowpies the edge in the running game.

Sorry, but I'd have to agree on this point.

Witten is probably a little better than Watson. Coyboys do have a slight edge in TE, but I don't think it will matter all that much. We have the better collection of receivers, thats all that matters.

Let me correct a slight misconception about the Cowboys D...they actually don't blitz that much, at least so far this year. They've been playing all year with at least one of their starting corners out. Most of their pressure has been coming from the front 3, Ware, and the occational blitzer.

If you guys go 3-4 wide all game, we're not going to blitz except in certain situations.

Coverage issues were a problem last year, not necessarily this year.

That's not to say we won't have any problems, but don't be surprised if you see a LOT of nickel and dime packages and cover 2 shells. If the Cowboys offense is working, we can trade points with the Patriots and stay competitive.

As for Witten, let's keep this conversation real. Watson isn't Witten, not even close. Expect to see our TEs (yes, both TEs) beating coverages all day long, especially if you focus on stopping TO, which I think would be a mistake.

Witten still needs someone to pass to him, and Romo isn't Brady, not even close.

I might take Witten over Watson too, but I think that the depth with Kyle Brady is pretty impressive. Even without Thomas I think that one good receiver and one good road-grader is hard to beat.

I also like Rivers, but he's probably not a factor in the game.

Point well taken on the Witten thing, but I included depth, especially in two TE sets. Kyle Brady is a road-grader but he also has great hands and experience.

My belief has been that the Cowboys blitz more than the average, but I'm willing to take your word on it that they don't.

I tend to think that the game will be decided in that trench because the Patriots OL is solid. I don't believe Dallas or Jesus H. Christ can cover if they're left hanging out there too long. They will need to penetrate and force Brady to rush his throws or I have to think it's curtains for Dallas.

In the other trench the only thing I really worry about is flushing Romo without a handle on what the receivers will do in that situation. I think this might be an area of concern for the Pats, and I am hoping that they run Matt Cassell balls to the wall in roll outs this week.

I think your comment about dime packages is likely to happen. From my limited perspective I don't see how else you can prepare for a scripted first series without that. You can't really assume anything, but you don't want to get beaten deep on the first series, so the assumption that you have to stop the pass first is not a bad assumption.

I would not argue that point of view.

OTOH, we seem to be gaining about a buck fifty a game, so I'm admitting that I'm baffled, but impressed. The running game, as it turns out, is an orchestra, and it seems to be well tuned and ready for some Led Zep right now.

I'll tell what pisses me off about Edge detractors: None of them actually play the damned instrument, or if they do, they seem infatuated with running the keyboard as if that is the same as music.

Edge's brilliance goes into what makes music, music. It isn't about speed.

Local FM talkshow pissant, Jay Severin, is a big Edge detractor. Of course, the players he really likes are all speed merchants who tap for effect, and confuse millions of run-on notes with actual music.

Don't get FrontSeven going on Edge detractors or there's going to be some ugly sacks.

Uh...so you're saying Romo doesn't throw the ball?

Or are you saying that you need to be Brady in order to throw?

I'm saying if Romo can't handle the Bill's defense what do you think he is going to do against the Pats? Whats the over-under for Romo INT's, 8?

Okay, one might have said so in the first place. As for "handling" the Bills D, last I checked, Romo led the game winning drives in the 4th quarter and still one the game. What's you point?

Better yet, don't tell me you're one of those football "fans" who think that one performance will absolutely be duplicated the next game.

If you're so sure, might as well put money on it in Vegas...but I'd bet you won't...

There running game is better than ours. Maroney isn't that great yet, Morris is the only reason the running games between the two teams are close.
