The BCS NCG

I wasn't impressed with Cody as most of you were. He's just a big body in there who's good at stopping the run, but the NFL is a pass happy league. He can't play ST either. I wouldn't take him until round 3 as a goal line specialist even if that.

Think about what BB wants to do to an opponent, he wants to make an opponent 1 dimensional and then develops exotic schemes to attack that 1 dimension.

With Mt. Cody, the opponent can not run inside period. With a DE and OLB on either side of Cody, plus 2 MLB's and safeties allowed to roam free, running to the outside is difficult against superior numbers.

That makes all opponents passers only. Now all we need is a competent secondary and since we have no talented pass rushers, some exotic blitz packages. Which if you think about it is exactly the way Alabama played against Texas.

Having a one-dimensional player who can stop the run and stop short yardage plays would a huge asset. This is worth a mid-first whether or not we keep Wilfork for another year.

He's not better then Wilfork though? I mean, there are a lot of NT out there that command multiple blockers, but that doesn't shutdown the other team's running attack completely. The plays they call in the NFL are a lot more complex then that.

NO, Cody is not better than Wilfork. Only Ochmed believes that.

However, unless Wilfork is signed to an extension, we will need our nose tackle for the future and it takes a year for college players to learn the position of 3-4 NT.

For me, the options are few
1) Extend Wilfork
2) Sign a free agent NT like Hampton
3) Sign a top NT in the draft

I would bring in a NT even if Wilfork is franchised and we don't want to trade him. It would be fine for Cody to play NT and Wilfork DE. Try running against that DL with Warren also at DE!!!

Hard to say, he's not going up against NFL OL, so their inability to move him off the LOS isn't a simple apples-to-apples comparison to Wilfork's battles at NT. Could he be as explosive as Wilfork in the passing game if he could drop another 30 pounds? I'd say yes with practice to find the pass rush moves that work for him. At 6'5" he's got longer reach than Wilfork, so if he can get his hands up he's going to be more likely to outreach the OL - he's also going to clog the passing lanes more if he gets penetration - which he's done in the kicking game to block the kicks he's knocked down. I'd consider him a two year project for Coach Woicik to develop, but if he can slim down and become more explosive in the passing game he looks to be at least as good as Wilfork.

I also think that the Pats could do some nice things with a "big" 4 man DL like Baltimore used to use with Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa (and still uses at times with Kelly Gregg and Haloti Ngata both inside).

As silly as it sounds I still think Mt. Cody is a better run stuffer NOW, than Wilfork is as an NFL Pro Bowler. I have never seen a college player as dominating at his position as Cody. (I am excluding RB Walker of Georgia, who is the only player I have ever seen that I thought should have gone directly to the NFL from high school.)

I think Mt. Cody can step into our D Line and play from day one and be an improvement in run stopping over Wilfork. Mt. Cody already knows all our DLine signals and calls. Where is the adjustment? The only adjustment I see is that NFL players are stronger. He handled college triple teams easily, I don't see NFL double teams causing him much grief.
