If Gabriel had the talent of Moss he would have.

Somewhat overlooked in this discussion - Gabriel must have also had very good things to tell Moss about the Pats and the organization, despite his unceremonious mid-season dumping.

Now the conspiracy freak in me says that the whole Gabriel deal is starting to look like an extended "feeler." What a concept...

"Hey oakland, let us borrow him, and we'll give you a fifth... we just want to ask a few questions..."

    Nahhhh.

Gabriel just suffers from some kind of mind cramps. His teams seem to basically like him, but something leads him to keep getting dumped.

That was the first thing that crossed my mind. Maybe they made the trade hoping he worked out, but knew they now had the added bonus of picking his brain about Moss' attitude.

What Gabriel was probably able to impart to BB that he would have found of interest, was his "teammate" qualities. If I recall correctly, Gabriel said that Moss was an excellent mentor and very encouraging to him. In other words, NOT a locker room cancer.

If you read the latest Tomase article, BB was contacted by Moss during the Deion Branch fiasco. Moss told Belichick that he would love to play for the Pats. The Pats didn't trade for him at that time probably because the Raiders would've wanted a 1st round pick.

Note well, it was all done through intermediaries. Otherwise it could be grounds for tampering. BB made that very clear a few days ago. Yes, it's semantics, but it seems that all involved are being very very careful re: the wording of that story.

Completely agree. Unless Gabriel was thinking to himself "How am I sure to make this squad? If I get rid of Moss by telling him good things about the Pat's and he goes there, I can take plays off all by myself."

I'm pretty sure that any contact between a player under contract and another team even if it is done through intermediaries can be considered tampering. Not that the league will do anything about it.

I'm pretty sure it's only tampering if the team initiates the contact. Moss telling a friend to tell the Pats that he would love to play for them, isn't tampering on the Patriots part. I'm not sure what kind of rules there are governing player tampering, but there isn't anything in that scenario that can get the team in trouble.

We don't know how the Patriots responded to Moss' contact, so they could be completely innocent. I think this gives a little insight into it.

Did you read about the tampering rumors going on? I think it was on ProFootbalTalk.com.

Edit...Doh, I hadn't read to the second page when I made my reply.
