She Fizzle and Jump Ball Joe eat up about 27mill of Ravens money. Is Ozzie losing his magic or was it all a fluke like his QB???

Ozzie's a really good GM, I think that's beyond questioning. This is just what happens when a lot of guys on a good team get old at once. The Patriots did a phenomenal job of negotiating that territory from 2008-2009, but Brady being Brady made that possible and even then there was a substantial drop-off in the quality of the team.

When a lesser player is your QB, this transition period is always going to be rough. The mark of a good GM, in that case, is coming out the other side of the process sooner rather than later.

IMO, the one real mistake that the Ravens made was giving Flacco that enormous contract, but even then I can understand why they did it, even if I don't agree.

On Sirius they were discussing this in depth on how teams that are really good for a long period of time keep deferring payments and paying bonuses up front that eventually when you start to decline you just have to take a hit for a couple of years before your cap situation is normal. Apparently the Steelers might be going through that now

So will Suggs be traded to the 49ers for a conditional 7th?

BTW, the one sack Suggs had in his last 8 games was a gift sack by Brady when he went down before Suggs ever got to him.

I think some more Star Wars movies are planned.

Suggs would be a good alien and save lots of bucks on makeup costs.

The Ravens are a bit top-heavy with their cap, but as Brady FTW! already mentioned, that is not unusual for veteran teams, and it is especially true for a club with a starting quarterback that is not on his rookie contract.

At the moment here are the biggest cap numbers for Baltimore for the 2014 season. They have $4.4 million in dead cap money, which relatively speaking isn't that bad.

    • $16,000,000 -- Haloti Ngata
    • $14,800,000 -- Joe Flacco
    • $12,400,000 -- Terrell Suggs
    • $10,500,000 -- Lardarius Webb
    • $8,750,000 --- Ray Rice
    • $8,450,000 --- Marshall Yanda
    • $4,400,000 --- Jameel McClain
    • $3,375,000 --- Elvis Dumervil
    • $3,166,666 --- Chris Canty
    • $2,800,000 --- Sam Koch
    • $2,374,177 --- Jimmy Smith
    • $2,330,000 --- Vonta Leach
    • $1,537,955 --- Matt Elam
    • $1,444,554 --- Courtney Upshaw
    • $1,078,392 --- Torrey Smith

Here are Baltimore's 2014 unrestricted free agents:

    • Eugene Monroe - starting LT
    • Jacoby Jones - starting WR
    • Michael Oher - starting RT
    • Arthur Jones - starting DT
    • Dennis Pitta - starting TE
    • Corey Graham - nickel CB
    • Jeromy Miles - backup S
    • Ed Dickson - starting TE
    • Daryl Smith - backup LB
    • Dallas Clark - backup TE
    • Brandon Stokley - #5 WR
    • James Ihedigbo - starting safety
    • Terrence Cody - backup NT
    • Bernard Scott - backup RB
    • Tandon Doss - PR, #4 WR

Right now Baltimore has 37 players signed for 2014 and beyond: 17 on offense (at $42.9 million), 17 on defense (at $60.3 mil) and three specialists (at $4.2 mil) for a total of - depending on who you want to believe - $107,450,107 (per OverTheCap) or $111,872,323 per the Baltimore Sun) of cap space used heading into the 2014 year. Baltimore's cap figure for 2014 is about $126.3 mil.

Miguel would be the best person to ask for opinions on this matter, but Baltimore could extend Suggs and also convert some of Webb's salary to a signing bonus to lower their cap numbers. Punter Sam Koch is probably history, as that would save $1.6 million in cap space. The Ravens can't release Ray Rice because doing so would not only not save them any cap space, it would add $5.5 mil to their 2014 cap. ILB Jameel McClain is another possible cap casualty - probably much more than Suggs is. If McClain is cut then the Ravens save $3.2 million in both cap space as well as actual cash savings.

Well we all know where he's going if the Ravrns cut him. Rex can't control himself when it comes to his former Ravens.

Spotrac gives the following breakdown for the Ravens:

Baltimore Ravens Salary Cap - 2014 Breakdown

    A couple of thoughts:

They have a lot of guys who aren't playing up to their cap figures, but some of those guys just aren't cuttable because it wouldn't save any real money against hte cap. Ngata has $15M dead money if cut, and Rice has $14M.

Basically, only the following guys save a significant amount of money against the cap if cut:

    Suggs: $7.8M
    Yanda: $2M
    McClain: $3.2M
    Koch: $1.6M
    Canty: $1.8M
    Leach: $1.7M
    Jimmy Smith: $1.3M
    Ngata: $1M

Everyone else saves less than $1M against the cap, and Suggs definitely stands out on that list.

I know the motto is to hate on Suggs, and I don't like him either. But you know Suggs caused that sack by beating Mankins inside. If it was any other young mobile QB, sure I don't think he would have been sacked. But it was Brady, and Suggs caused that sack whether you want to give him credit for it or not.

And as I predicted, Jump ball Joe's contract is screwing the ravens over badly. First Boldin, now Suggs. I can't believe they overpaid him like that. I wonder if Flacco will take a pay cut if the ravens ask him to do so.

I dunno, the alternative was committing long-term money to Flacco at a time when they had no real idea if he was the QB for their future. They definitely took a risk, and it backfired big time when Flacco ended up pulling a historically good postseason out of his ass, but that doesn't change the fact that it was the right call at the time that it was made. If anything, his body of work suggests that the real mistake was actually giving him the contract that they ended up giving him. They were right to doubt if he was their guy at the time, and as this season proved yet again, he isn't the guy that they're now paying him to be.

He's 28, which means there's no more room to bank on potential. he is what he is as a player, and what he is is someone who'll give you ~3,600 yards, ~20-25 touchdowns, and ~10-12 picks. He's basically an average starting quarterback, which is bad news if you're paying the guy $20M per year.

If he's cut and not just re-negotiated to lower his cap number, then he's almost definitely signing with the Jets. They have an OLB need and Rex loves him.

the main downside: listening to his moronic opinions about Brady and the Patriots twice a year.

Next year we don't play Baltimore at all. I was planning on enjoying a respite from his utter stupidity.

He's entering the last year of his contract, so restructuring isn't really a possibility. They could definitely extend him, though, in a way that makes him cheaper in 2014.
