They'll be back after Prince Obama "Surrenders"
Come on a.paul, don't you have any BAD news that makes us look like incompetent imperialist bad guys?
Best part...British paper quoting the British commander...:singing:
I'll be happier when they pass over the "brink" . but yeah........ Very good news indeed. Most who pay attention have known this was occuring nice to see it getting VERY LITTLE, but some press all the same.
Ditto, for Iraq. We could actually win there too. Not that anyone cares or wants to discuss it anymore.
Whether you hate the war or not, this is good news.
Lets invade Brazil, now...I bet we could win there eventually, too.
I hear Norway's ripe for the taking, too.
WTF are we waiting for?
That's great news that the Brits have been able to beat the Taliban six years after our ADD made us turn to Iraq. I'm sure we helped a lot, BTW. What's the over-under on how long it will take for them to make another comeback?
Anyone for "Whack-a-Mole"?
Just a month ago, reports were that the Taliban was regaining footholds all over the country, and the "coalition" was losing ground.... Either there's been a dramatic turnaround in recent weeks, or someone's lying.
Huh, what? I thought we already lost on both fronts? It can't be true.
So in other words you think we should have left Afghanistan alone after 9/11, let the Taliban continue to rule after giving safe haven to AQ to live and set up training camps. There's a big difference between Afghanistan and Brazil or Norway. Heck, there's even a big difference between Afghanistan and Iraq.
Was it over when the German's bombed PEARL HARBOR??????
FORGET IT, HE'S ROLLING
Witty. Unfortunately, for your sarcastic position, ThinkProgress does nothing more than reference other news outlets and news journals.
Karzai Interview published today under the title: "'I Wish I Had the Taliban as My Soldiers"
June 2, 2008
SPIEGEL: During the Taliban times there were no checkpoints at all.
Karzai: That was the best aspect of the Taliban. They did a lot wrong, but they also did a few things right. I wish I had the Taliban as my soldiers. I wish they were serving me and not people in Pakistan or others. When we came back to Afghanistan, the international community brought back all those people who had turned away from the Taliban …
SPIEGEL: … you mean the brutal commanders who fought in the civil war …
Karzai: … who then became partners with the foreign allies and are still paid by them today for their support. It is not always easy for me to find a way that can enable Afghanistan's administration to function.
Gee, President Karzai, maybe we should then just get out? Karzai is blaming us while saying "Yeah the Taliban had some wrong things, but at least they made the trains run on time".
Borat Voice: "Grayt Soookcess!"
Headline: Western forces to blame for rising violence in Afghanistan: Karzai
June 2, 2008
"Afghan President Hamid Karzai puts the blame for rising violence in his country on international forces, saying they have mismanaged the fight against the resurging Taliban..."
Glad you guys feel all smug and satisfied. However, it looks like the President who is on the ground there isn't as "Mission Accomplished" as you.
I'm with you on this one PC, I remember this being a widely reported assessment, not just something from a few left-leaning sites. I sure hope that the assessment is right, but my gut tells me the truth is probably somewhere in between; they're not done, but they're also not gaining significantly in strength.
BTW, I very strongly believe that Afghanistan IS the theater where we need our forces and where we need to press the REAL fight against Al Qaeda.
Let's just not yet declare victory because one British Brigadier is holding press conferences.
MORE US and Allied troops need to be in Afghnistan and we need to severely press Pakistan on the Taliban and Al Qaeda neglect.
Who declared victory? I think we're simply discussing how the good guys are on the right side of the current score, which is contrary to the doom and gloom, we've lost already, reports most of us have been hearing for years now. I guess when people post we're losing, or have lost, it's ok, but when posting a winning score, that isn't final, it's not. Why are people so upset at good news? BDS has overtaken too many.
Who did, Shmess? Just trying to bring a little good news to the table occasionally.
Maybe the Taliban have been put on the run for the moment, but in I wouldn't doubt that in the fall we hear about a resurgence. The Taliban won't be defeated IMO until we keep our promise made in '01 about building up the infrastructure of Afghanistan. I.E. roads, bridges, schools, hospitals etc. In the North thats what the Germans have done, and its pretty quite up there. Also another means of employment needs to be found for the average Joe Afghanie besides making blankets and growing poppy plants. A poor person who has nothing is more susceptible to hard core Taliban religious rule.
