Another league source said that he thought Sheppard and Brown are better pure 1-on-1 coverage guys, but that Samuel is the best in the game at reading a quarterback and jumping a route for the big play.

The Eagles hope to get quite a few of those big plays this fall.

    Re: Surprise, Surprise...Asante..........

This is what happens when our defense has DB's playing 8-yard cushions (even on 3rd and short).

That article looked alot like about a million posts I saw on here when he left.

I know alot of the sports media thinks the fans are idiots, but we can be just as perceptive as them. Asante is about to join the long list of productive Pats who chased big money and ended their careers in obscurity.

The knock on Samuel has always been that he is not strong in man and press coverage. That is a big reason why the Patriots have eased off the press zone coverage in recent years. If the Eagles want this guy to play a lot of press or man coverage, they may be in for a big shock.

Fact of the matter is that Samuel is not a real physical CB and relies on instincts more than physicality to play the position. The Patriots realized that and revised his coverages to adjust.

Keep in mind the reputation of a Philadelphia sports fan. Prefer physical play over finesse, from Dave Schultz to Rocky Balboa. If fans (and team mates) don't like Samuels' one-on-one drills, how will they react to his (disdain for) tackling?

If they keep writing things like this, Asante won't have a chip on his shoulder, he'll have a BOLDer up there.

Welcome to Puns 101. Anybody? Anybody?

Iggle fans haven't figured it out yet.
Right now they all have their panties in a bunch because they just figured out their owner is from Boston and was at the Celtics game.
It's a bigger deal with them than Brady wearing a Yankee cap.

Always thought that Assante was a nickel back, and our d guru's played to his strengths not sure that will happen with the eagles.. hate to use the system DB thing, but something to consider. .

i liked samuel, but i feel the need to blame the super bowl loss on him, he held because he wanted big money, then he droped the money catch. if he holds on to that like a star CB should, there is no david tyree catch, no TD to palxico, and an unbeaten season.

Also, if he holds onto that ball, he is most likely Super Bowl MVP, which would have led to even MORE money.

Bye bye, Asante. You usually came up big in the wrong moments.

I agree. Without significant injuries and maybe an offense that can score some points, I believe the Eagles can have a solid defense and the coaches will know how to play on the strengths of Asante Samuel. The biggest challenge for Samuel is having to figure out how to cover the likes of TO and Burress. Somehow, I have a sneaky feeling Samuel is going to need help with these bigger and quicker receivers and will end up being picked on by Dallas and the Giants with some regularity.

Actually without trying to hijack the thread, the Eagles problems seem to be on the other side of the ball. Westbrook is unhappy with his contract (probably more so after seeing how much they gave Samuel) and McNabb's shoulder appears to be a concern according to news reports after watching the OTA.....

    The article is completely bogus.

    Training camp?

Please. Asante was one of the top 10 CBs in the league.

    Easily.

Was he worth $10 mill a year?

    Har har har har har.

Which is precisely why it was strange it was the Eagles that threw the Brinks truck at him, since they are a press coverage man-to-man team.

You know you're having a bad day when Eagles back-up receivers are burning you.

Heh, if that is true he is going to have a helluva time in that division.

Top CB in that division? Pacman Jones....sorry Samuel, you were a product of the BB system and nothing more - welcome to obscurity! ;)
