Steph Stradley: Why Pats Should Get Picks Back

Most people agree it's crap but the consensus is that it is back punishment for Spygate. See the ridiculous BSPN article from last year.

By most people I mean fans from other teams.

It just frees up more $$ to bring in a FA or sign our own.

Yes, the Patriots are scanning last year's IR list to see what dilapidated, injury prone, broken down offensive linemen, defensive linemen, running backs, and receivers they can "kick the tires on"...

That's why Steph is the man! She not even a Patriots fan, but she can see through the BS!

Use the typical 1st round pick funds on Matt Forte... He's older and you won't get as many years out of him as you would a draft pick, but he would be a great piece for Brady to make a run with.

Reminds me of how terrific Ms. Stradley was throughout the whole mess last year.

I think it's useful that she's writing this now and that she continues to blog on this, as the clerks for the judges on the Panel might actually find their way to her web page when they are doing their background research.

Of course, the judges are going to be ruling on the narrow point of whether Goodell had the authority to do what he did, whatever the facts might have been, but it can't hurt.

You overlook the fact that one of the main advantages of drafting well is that you get players on cap friendly rookie contracts. (Consider what Malcolm Brown's value would be as a free agent, versus what he cost.) Any team that wants to "free up $$" can simply pass on their pick when they are called. Because you have more money but fewer quality players, it is a bit misleading to suggest (not necessarily intentionally) that the loss of draft picks is somehow advantageous.

What does that mean?

Another great piece by Steph. Too bad it will likely be relegated to sit and gather mold in the pile of "Critical Articles" on Wellsreportcontext.com along with droppings from the likes of Tanguay and Volin. They really should have separate categories for articles by lawyers and scientists. Not that it would make much difference, but if the team is going to bother to catalog this stuff, they might as well do it right.

Yes, Hicks, Branch, Siliga, Ayers, Casillas, Freeney, Chris Jones, K. Martin, Blount, and Dion Lewis all worked out terribly.

Malcolm Brown's contract is what, under $2 million a year? That's the kick in the head there's no getting past. The Pats typically draft pretty good players in the first round. No matter how we try to make ourselves feel better, the reality is the Pats are losing a good player for cheap for the next four years (and then beyond that if they wanted him).

Any positive spin on it is just denial at this point. Whatever the last stage of grief is, I'm there. It sucks, let's move on.
