Steelers Fans: The Most Arrogant In The NFL
    By: Russ Goldman

Steeler fans are the most arrogant in the NFL. This fan-base loves looking for excuses for their team's losses, and it drives me crazy....

Might be a toss up with the Ravens fan base. At least Steelers' fans have more of reason to be arrogant

This is true. The Steelers are the worst fans in the NFL (besides the Jets.) They simply can never accept defeat.

The two "Spygate" games they always bring up are the AFCCG in '01 in '04. Those games were thrown away by Big Ben and Kordell Stewart, as the Patriots offense simply capitalized on terrible quarterbacking play.

I'll never forget when Bill Cowher dismissed Spygate as completely overblown and stated that there was no way the Patriots had an advantage in any game against the Steelers. How did their fans react? Attacked Cowher, calling him a "traitor" while still crying about their losses to the Patriots.

The Steelers have had their share of issues with domestic violence from their players, a should-have-been HGH scandal a few years ago, and the obvious steroid scandal from the 1970s. Yet their fans seem to think their organization is above everything.

That was quite a Super Bowl a few years ago when the ref admitted that he was a Steelers fan and handed them a win over Seattle. And the Patriots don't deserve their Lombardi trophies?

I really hope they lose on the big stage. Their fans think the Steelers are everything that is right about sports. Everyone on the outside sees a big, stinking pile of hypocrisy.

Where are the good forums for these teams?

Couple of rabid fan bases, for sure.
    The crap should be flying.
I would give the edge to GB as far as patting themselves on the back.
    "We are the best".

It is cool that the relatively small town supports an NFL team.
    Meanwhile, LA goes begging.

Both teams have a lot of knowledgeable fans,
but the whole Brett Favre thing spun out of control for a while.
Now they buy T-Shirts to show they hate the guy.
At one time, they would have built a statue to him.

    Shame really.
    Steeler fans are like meatheads.
Meat Packers ironically bring the cheese.
Could make for a nice big sandwich.

Or a riot of epic proportions.
maybe, riot, then everyone can take a break for a god***m snack.

    100% agree

I'm rooting against the Steelers in the super bowl. But not because of some jealous, spiteful, hatred of a rival team and organization. Because if I'm honest with myself, I have allot of respect for how that organization is run, and respect most players on that team.

No, I'm rooting against them because from my experiance, a large majority of at least there most vocal fans, don't deserve the success there team provides for them.

I generally like Steelers fans. They are very passionate and most seem to know their football. Packers, Bears and Giants fans are decent too. Green Beans and Chargers fans are by far the worst of all; Eagles fans aren't much above them.

If it weren't for the annoying fan base and Rapistberger/James Harrison beating up females, the Steelers would be a very likeable franchise. They build great blue collar teams through the draft and no big money free agency. It's too bad their fans are so bitter toward us owning them. But it also makes you feel good when fans of a franchise with 6 rings have such an inferiority complex towards us with their constant shots at Brady/BB and Bernard Pollard fan club Tshirts.

With all due respect to the article's author, he makes a silly argument.

ALL fanbases have their fair share of idiots and arrogant blockheads, trash talking trolls, know-nothing bandwagon fans, "my team can do no wrong"-type homers, and sky-is-falling doomsayers on Mondays after a loss. Our fanbase is no different, and in fact because we have a ton of fans, we probably have a lot of these types. That's just the law of averages. But if that's true, it's also true that we have a ton of extremely knowledgeable, objective, courteous, and lifetime, live-and-die-with-the-Steelers type of fans.

You could visit any team's board, cherry-pick the "offensive" posts and ignore the objective ones, and come away with the conclusion that it's an unknowledgeable, arrogant fanbase. (This is an amusingly common practice on EVERY board in fact: to go to another fan's board and pull out an extreme post, so you can say, "look how stupid/arrogant/annoying the XXXXX fans are!") And because a large percentage of posters on rival teams' message boards are there for trolling (again, this is unfortunately true of EVERY fan base), of course you'll get a negative view of the fanbase.

The irony of course is that members of other fanbases may hold the same view (citing identical reasons) of the Patriots fanbase. And they're equally incorrect.

Individual fan bases do have general tendencies, however. I happen to think Steelers fans are a good bunch, at least from my experience. Same with Packers, Bears and Giants fans. Green Beans fans and Chargers fans, however, are consistently awful as a group. Patriots fans are amazingly respectful (at Gillette Stadium at least), I believe largely because getting out of hand puts your season tickets at risk.

Why are you writing an article smearing steelers fans? Their franchise has won like 5 or 6 championships. I think they have some bragging rights there. On the other hand look at Jets fans. The last time their team won it most of us weren't even alive. There's nothing to brag about there but they are more loud mouthed and obnoxious than most fans I've ever seen. And their coach and players just feed into it.

Yeah, I think the opening post is off base.

There are no doubt many jerks in the Steelers fan base.

But the fans I know are solid citizens. They root for a great team. They love their team. I have seen very few of them behave like the vile nitwits who root for the Jets and Fins.

And yeah, SpyGate is a convenient excuse. But I think you'll find equal number of Rams, Panthers and Eagles fans using that as well.

In my view, the real villain in SpyGate is Bill Belichick. When he got that memo, he should have stopped taping, and daring Mangini to call him out was stupid. True, Mangini was an ingrate and dooosh to the extreme. But BB should have never given him, or opposing fans, the ammo to harm the Pats legacy.

Nope, I got no problem with Steelers fans, on the whole.

I really haven't had a problem with most steeler fans. They never made fun of us much and it was pretty easy to do so. Tho they call us the "Black and wrong gold" and we call them the "Black and canary yellow", most have been pretty civil. They do have a HUGE passion for their team and football, but its to be expected, they have accomplish a lot, and are proud of their football club.
But we are not in their division or ever been a threat to them before, so that might have something to do with it.

Because you are rabid does make you arrogant. They travel well and are extremely loyal. However, their fellow PA team, the Eagles, have to be the worst fans, barely edging out the Jets, with the Raiders taking the Bronze.

this is an annoying sour grapes article. i know lots of steeler fans, they're just fans of their team. of course they're somewhat entitled, they win a lot. news flash: lots of people see the patriots fanbase in much the same light. i mean you really took the time to write this?

First of all I appreciate all comments whether they are postive and negative.

There are of course some great Steelers fans.

This article is about sour grapes. I have been exposed to many Steelers fans that truly believe they deserved to go to 2 more Superbowls because of SpyGate. For me that is sour grapes.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me. This is just my opinion based on what I have read and heard.

If you think I am wrong. That is fine.

I have just read and heard enough that it was my time to respond.

    Again, thanks for commenting.

All good points and typified by a letter from a Steelers' fan from Maine on page 12 of the current issue of Sports Illustrated. No fan base in America has the collective level of hypocrisy that the Steelers' fan base has.

^This, and especially because Pats fans aren't the anywhere near the most humble fans in the world but its not like we have to be. Our team has actually one something as have the Steelers fans team.

Certainly everyone has the right to their opinion (however sweeping). But some of your statements suggest that either 1) you're drawing conclusions from an extraordinarily small sample set of "data" or 2) you've had horrendous luck in your encounters with Steelers fans.

I'll say this: a couple of the statements in your article could be disproven with even the most cursory review of a Steelers board. This makes me wonder if your objectivity isn't clouded by the very "homerism" that you categorically assign to our entire fanbase. For example:

"If you have ever checked out the Steeler messageboards you will notice mostly a love fest that has very little critique on the team."

Russ, I ask this with all sincerity: have you ever been to a Steelers board after a loss, or when a player has a bad game? They called Troy "Bustamalu" his rookie year. Many players suddenly become "worthless". Fans called for Tomlin's head as recently as last year (SB be damned). Even Lebeau hasn't been above reproach. The point being, like many teams' boards, our boards often brutally critical of our team when things aren't going perfectly well (and sometimes, even if they are). All of which makes your statement sort of mind-boggling if you've spent any time at all at a Steelers site.

"I have yet to see Steelers fans give credit to another team."

This is extremely curious, since I've seen complimentary posts after Steelers losses to the Pats *on this board*. To know this, you don't even have to make the effort to go to a Steelers board...it's on your own site!

Your article is literally one of the first things you see currently on the patsfans.com home page, which sort of makes it look "official". I'm not sure if you're one of the mods or someone involved with patsfans.com, but I thought I'd respond again in case you were. Hopefully your article doesn't express a shared sentiment of the folks responsible for running patsfans.com (where I've had a very good experience as a "rival" fan btw), because I couldn't disagree more.

I just want to clarify since I responded with a clearly negative post toward the Steeler fan base. I respect the Steeler fans, I respect their passion.

My negativity stems from my experiance with Steeler fans attitude toward Patriots fans in general. Without getting to indepth, I think the post from Ice Ice Brady encompasses my thoughts on the subject perfectly.

Some in this thread have pointed out that allot of Steeler fans are passionate and knowledgeable, and I agree............Unless the subject is the Patriots. Then all that knowledge tends to allude them, and the passion gets whipped into a frenzy of misinformation and downright dismissive behaviour.

    CHEATERS!!

    Please.

Like Ice Ice Brady said before, they have a knack for digging there heads in the sand when it comes to curious things that happen within their organization, and even cry bloody murder if they feel your misrepresenting the facts on Big Ben's rape incident. But god forbid they try to apply that logic to the rediculous Spygate affair! No, no, we cheated. It's the only explaination.

Good/Bad fans everywhere, i know, I know. I even understand. But I'm with the OP in this regard. When the subject is the Patriots. Steeler fans are patheticlly hypocritical, dismissive, and sad. Just my opinion.
