Looks more and more like Detroit is going QB and that QB is Stafford

I expect this myself,In fact I expect the Rams to be the first pick on draft day as I think Detroit does what Houston did with Mario a few years ago and gets the drama out of the way a day or two before and signs him up early.

Hope it works for them. I would have went OT Jason Smith.

The Rams are probably getting used to this by now. 2nd year in a row they get to "draft 1st" while only beind 2nd worst.

Re: Stafford tells former teammates "Detroit is a done deal" as #1 pick 40M Guarantee

I've been saying this for 2 weeks now. Detroit reportedly fell in love with Stafford at his pro day. The only way I didn't see them taking him was if he wanted too much money, which would have been stupid on his part, since if Detroit passed he might well have fallen quite a bit and ended up making much less.

I think Detroit is set with Stafford, and barring some huge trade offer St. Louis will take Jason Smith. Then it's up to KC to choose between Aaron Curry, Eugene Monroe, or trading down. Seattle will either take Mark Sanchez or Monroe at #4; I'm guessing they go with Sanchez, but if KC trades down to someone wanting either player then Seattle will take whichever one is left. Aaron Curry could possibly fall to Cleveland at #5, but Cleveland is rumored to be in love with Michael Crabtree. Cincinnati at #6 will take Eugene Monroe if he is still left standing.

    Most likely top 6 scenario:

    1. Detroit - Matt Stafford
    2. St. Louis - Jason Smith
    3. KC - Aaron Curry
    4. Seattle - Mark Sanchez
    5. Cleveland - Michael Crabtree
    6. Cincinnati - Eugene Monroe

40 million is too much money for a guy that has never been to 1 training camp. But that is a discussion for another time in the near future.

If you want to go that far, 40 million is too much money for any athlete at anything, but that's never stopped anyone.

Here's Peter King's take on Detroit and the #1 pick:

Detroit Lions like Matthew Stafford, Jason Smith, Aaron Curry - Peter King - SI.com

I agree with him about needing to be able to sign the #1 pick, but I don't see that being a huge problem this year. Just like last year, with no one standing out from the pack, the team with the #1 pick has some leverage, since anyone wanting to hold out for a megadeal will risk losing out on being the top pick, and potentially lose more money in the long run.

I'm not a Stafford fan. I think physical tools are vastly overrated for QBs. I don't see Stafford having Matt Ryan type cool under pressure or ability to read defenses. I don't know if he'll be Joey II, but I wouldn't personally use the #1 pick on him.

Re: Stafford tells former teammates "Detroit is a done deal" as #1 pick 40M Guarantee

My college roommate was a huge Georgia fan, so I still watch their games every once in a while. Stafford will be a solid quarterback in this league one day--but they need to let him sit on the bench for at least a year. Go with Culpepper for now. Stafford should have waited a year before coming out, in my opinion, as he would have been a much better quarterback (he's immature and still hasn't put it all together yet), but I doubt he'd crack the top ten in next year's far more talented QB crop. So from his point of view, coming out this year earns him far more money. Can't fault the guy for that.

Still. He's raw, inconsistent, and trusts too much in his arm instead of making plays with his smarts, cool, and accuracy. Timing and anticipation will beat pure strength 9 times out of 10. That requires clear thinking and the ability to perform well under pressure, neither of which Stafford has displayed. Ah well, I'm rooting for the kid. Hope he does well.

Stafford has huge bust potential and doesn't have nearly the experience as a Ryan or Flacco. Of course he scored big time with the 40M guarantees and the #1 overall pick so it looks like he made the right choice for him. Detroit is taking a big gamble that could blow up in their faces.

I think Seattle's 1st choice would be Aaron Curry. So if he's not taken at #3 he'll definitely be gone at #4. They could go with Sanchez, but I think their 2nd choice would be OT. That's when the free fall begins! I think SF would be his likely destination, but don't be surprised if Dan Snyder throws a huge offer to Jax to get Mark.

    my top 15 scenario:

    1. Detroit - Matt Stafford
    2. St. Louis - Jason Smith
    3. KC - Aaron Curry
    4. Seattle - Eugene Monroe
    5. Cleveland - Michael Crabtree
    6. Cincinnati - Brian Orakpo
    7. Oakland - Jeremy Maclin
    *8. Washington(Jax) - Mark Sanchez
    9. Green Bay - B.J. Raji
    10. San Francisco - Everette Brown
    11. Buffalo - Andre Smith
    **12. Houston(Den) - Malcolm Jenkins
    *13. Jacksonville(Was) - Michael Oher
    14. New Orleans - Vontae Davis
    **15. Denver(Hou) - Rey Maualuga

You mean you think its odd to say Stafford, a 3 year starter in the SEC, isn't as experienced as Joe Flacco, a 2 year starter at Deleware?

Why would Snyder try to get Sanchez when the coach has committed to Campbell?

Schein on Sirius tends to think its a possibility as well that Sanchez could go to Washington - When it comes to Snyder you should realize NOTHING is impossible - IMO Campbell is not a longterm solution for the Skins at the QB position anyway,Sanchez could be some good insurance if Campbell falters.

Any pick besides Stafford would be a huge mistake. Stafford will at least win a game or two. Drafting an OT will not stop Culpepper from throwing INTs.

Just pay the man now and try to work on a 3 year plan of getting the team up to snuff.

Re: Stafford tells former teammates "Detroit is a done deal" as #1 pick 40M Guarantee

There's little evidence to convince me that an underclassman QB with a good number of doubters because of several bad habits is a wise selection at number 1 overall, especially when that pick comes from an organization as desperate as the Lions. The Lions are starting from scratch, all but 2-3 positions are open for upgrade, there's going to be more pain before this ship turns around. Hanging the millstone of franchise savior around the neck of a too young, too iffy QB only to turn him loose in a dying, broken city filling up with casinos then hand him $40mil is high wire act I give a 1 in 4 chance of succeeding.

The new GMs should open their windows on the way to work and smell the world around them. I bet Detroit would rather see a hard hat, nuts and bolts mauler who tears the head off anyone around him than a store brand imitation of Joe Namath come from the deep south.

Other years Stafford wouldn't be ever be considered at number one overall - and that's all the reason the Lions need to pass him by. I'd take anything to move down in the first three/five. Give KC a crack at Jason Smith or take him for yourself and use your second first rounder to move back up to get Sanchez who strikes me as a having the savvy to be an all-everything franchise QB.

Re: Stafford tells former teammates "Detroit is a done deal" as #1 pick 40M Guarantee

There is no true good option at #1 in the draft. Stafford and Sanchez are high risk/reward juniors who at best will likely need a few years to mature. Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe are safer, but aren't really in the Joe Thomas/Jake Long class. Aaron Curry is the safest bet, but the money involved for the #1 pick is not suitable for spending on a LB. Michael Crabtree and BJ Raji have issues.

The money involved in the #1 pick has really made it problematic. You should probably only ever use it on QB, DL or OL. Anything else is likely to create a problem even if the prospect succeeds, as you will be spending a disproportionate amount of your cap on any other position.

So you can take Curry and get an excellent prospect who is being paid ridiculous money, you can reach a bit with one of the OT's, or you can gamble that one of the QBs will pan out and it will end up being an appropriate investment. Not a great set of options.

Thank god we don't pick there.
