Spurs have perfected their own Patriot act
By JEFF CAPLAN
[email protected]

SAN ANTONIO — Gregg Popovich might be a better dresser than Bill Belichick, but when it comes to building and sustaining successful franchises, the head coaches of the San Antonio Spurs and the New England Patriots are in a league of their own.

In four seasons, 2001-04, the Patriots won three Super Bowls, earning the distinction as the NFL’s first dynasty under the league’s “hard” salary cap.

Through shrewd drafting and savvy free-agent signings, Belichick constructed a team of selfless players with a team-first mind-set. The Patriots’ success made them the recent gold standard of the NFL.

The Spurs .... have followed a similar blueprint as the Patriots — dynasties that have defied salary-cap era parity by placing a premium on character, defense and championships.

With titles in 1999, 2003 and 2005, and the favorites to win it all again, the self-effacing Spurs are undoubtedly the class of the NBA.

.... I don’t think it’s by accident that you see those people here. That’s the way we try and build it.”

The NBA operates under a “soft” cap, which gives teams greater flexibility than NFL teams to re-sign their star players at maximum salaries without busting the cap.

Still, navigating the cap takes scrupulous management. Take the New York Knicks’ disastrous $139 million payroll, or even Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who will wind up paying Michael Finley $51.8 million over three seasons to play for the Spurs.

Under owner Peter Holt, Buford and Popovich have locked up San Antonio’s core for at least the next three seasons. They’re all original draft picks — Duncan, the No. 1 pick in 1997; Ginobili, taken with the 57th pick in 1999; and Parker, the 28th pick in 2001.

....
The Spurs have surrounded their three superstars with mostly veteran free agents eager to join the disciplined team for one reason — to win rings. They buy into Popovich’s defensive philosophy and accept roles that suit the team goal.

“Along with the Steve Kerrs, the Danny Ferrys, the Terry Porters, the Robert Horrys and Michael Finleys,” Buford said, rattling off names of veterans who signed with the Spurs late in their careers, “all those guys sacrificed at some point to be here.”

As in any business, others try to emulate success. The Spurs need look only to their opponent. Cleveland’s general manager is Ferry, groomed under Popovich and Buford. Coach Mike Brown, known as a defensive specialist, was a Spurs assistant from 2000-03.

....

Tale of two dynasties

The NBA’s San Antonio Spurs and the NFL’s New England Patriots have followed similar blueprints to success, creating dynasties in leagues where salary caps are designed to create parity. The two franchises’ fortunes under their head coaches:

Spurs Patriots
Gregg Popovich Coach Bill Belichick
11 Yrs. with team 7
6 (15 overall) Div. titles 5 (10 overall)
4 (4 overall) Conf. titles 3 (5 overall)
3 (1999, 2003, 2005) League titles 3 (2001, 2003, 2004)
0       League titles before current coach       0

Lucking into Tim Duncan and Tom Brady certainly didn't hurt.

Lucking into Tim Duncan???? He was a number one pick! No luck there.

Brady on the other hand....

You are aware that the draft order is determined by lotterry in the NBA?

Whoever got the first pick was going to take Duncan, the Spurs just happened to get it.

Seriously, the Spurs shouldn't be anywhere close to Tim Duncan. That was the year Robinson got injured and they barely missed out on the playoffs...if Robinson hadn't been injured, who know how different NBA history would be?

p.s. we might be talking about how the Blazers lucked into Greg Oden a decade from now (assuming Ian keep this board up till then :D)

Yes. I am also aware that the teams in the lottery suck and therefore were not lucked into that position of being able to get the 1st pick. You can't compare Duncan and Brady in terms of what each team KNEW what each player would bring to their organizations.

I never said they lucked into Duncan in that they didn't know he was going to be great. There are several teams in the mix to land the top pick in the NBA draft, so getting it IS luck regardless of whether your team sucked. The Celtics had the second worst pick in basketball but ended up with the fifth overall pick. The Blazers had the fifth worst record and ended up with the first pick. There is A LOT of luck involved.

The Spurs could have easily ended up with a lower pick and they never would have gotten Duncan.

It is due to the LACK of luck that the Celtics set the franchise back 10years by missing out on the Duncan pick and now on the Oden/Durant sweepstakes.
If the Spurs and Patriots are blessed...the Celtics are even more cursed than the pre-2004 Red Sox!
Regardless, I don't like the Spurs: Ginobelli is a flopper and Bowen is a cheapshot artist. If Rodney Harrison thinks the Titans tried to crack his knees, then the Suns must think Bowen is a murderer.

I'm not a huge basketball person (at all) but I respect the Spurs and what they have been able to view.

I sort of view Bowen as the Rodney Harrison of the NBA.

Re: Spurs Emulate Patriots

We know that the Celtics should have gotten Duncan if the NBA didn't have a lottery. Imagine Tim in Boston.

It was literally San Antonio's day.

Before the actually lottery draw started that particular year, the outfit running the lottery (was it Price Waterhouse? I don't remember.) did a mock choice for the benefit of all observers, just to show how the lottery was going to work.

The ball that came out for the demo was none other than...San Antonio!

When stuff like that happens, you know it's the gods speaking to you!

Re: Spurs Emulate Patriots

Of course, this article ignores the fact that the Spurs wouldn't have any titles in the past 10 years if the ping-pong balls hadn't bounced their way in 1997.

Um, do you know how they determine who gets the number 1 pick..?

This isn't entirely accurate, IIRC. The Spurs were indeed one of the worst teams in the NBA if you look at their record... of course, they tanked the entire 2nd half of that season but what's a little tanking among friends...?

Re: Spurs Emulate Patriots

The stars have certainly aligned for me as I am enjoying an amazing sports utopia at the moment.

My teams (in order of my passion/enthusiasm):

Patriots - the most talented rosted in franchise history and favored to win the Super Bowl

Spurs - about to start the NBA Finals where they are heavily favored en route to a 4th title in 8 years

Angels - most wins in MLB (2nd best record to BoSox)

Ducks - Stanley Cup Champions as of last night for the first time in franchise history (14 years); I was 5 steps into the Honda Center last night but that's a story for another time.

I wonder whether there is even another fan in the world with the same exact favorite teams in the four major sports; and I'm only talking about fans who have been with each team since its long-suffering losing days which each of these teams has certainly had as opposed to the band-wagoners.

Probably not....

Spurs/Pats nfl live

On nfl live they compared nba finalists to nfl players, they said Duncan's was Brady for winning and not being flashly, and Bruce Bowen was Rodney for being a defensive specialist who everyone calls dirty

Comparing Bowen to Rodney is total disrespect. Rodney is HOF caliber playmaker. Bowen is a scrub in comparison. Rodney, are you reading this? I can't believe they disrespected you like that!

Rodney doesn't play offense, neither does bowen, calm down
