Might be a minor point, but since "wrong" Borges, I've been a stickler for proper credit due for scoops by football writers.

Albert Breer in his blog today on Asante Samuel reporting to camp gave props today to the NFL Network, but, nary a word for SMY of the Providence Journal, who first broke the story last night.

"You might think that Asante Samuel's arrival, speculated on since the NFL Network reported on it last week..."

No mention of the ProJo as of the time of this post.

Mike Reiss did, PFT, ESPN and CNN-SI, as well.

To me Breer went out of his way...NOT to credit, Shalise Manza Young of ProJo.

I like Breer...however, this looks petty to me.

I like Breer too and this is not like him. I wonder if his editors got in the way of his being factually straight forward?!??

I'm sure it's an oversight and I'm sure it will be corrected. They're pretty stand-up over there - Tomase, Breer, etc...

yea, you're probably right.....however,I did check all day and in his 1st blog of the day,Breer mentioned NFLN in the opening sentence, not ProJo.

By 11:04 a.m. when Breer posted his blog entry, Asante was already in Foxboro. Breer wouldn't need to attribute that to another publication when he could see for himself that Asante was there. I could see if he posted this before Asante reported, then to avoid pulling a Borges, he would have to write that "The Providence Journal is reporting that Asante will be reporting Monday."

Other than that, there is no reason why Breer should have to mention that ProJo was the first to report that Asante will be back on Monday. Do we think any other publication tomorrow will mention ProJo? They didn't make him report.

I don't know why he mentioned NFL Network, that really wasn't needed. Especially, if it was obvious that Asante was in Foxboro.

    Yes, that's the point.

If a reporter has uncovered a state of affairs that would only be known through her investigation then it would be wrong to report that state of affairs without crediting her. But if she has predicted a state of affairs that is subsequently publicly observed to happen then, of course, her prediction was vindicated and she had a scoop, but it's absolutely OK to report on that state of affairs without crediting her.

not quite......why go out of your way to credit the NFL Network in the opening line of his blog?

It looks intentional to me......and you're missing one thing......It should be done, just as a courtesy.

    just as Mike Reiss did.

As a courtesy? Since when do publications fighting for readers and Internet hits do anything just out of the kindness of their heart that may pump up their competition.

FYI, the ProJo scoop didn't mention the NFL Network scoop. The NFL Network said it would happen this week, so we all knew it would happen this week. ProJo just got the exact day.

u sound like bitter Borges...the NFL got a large window...BFD...it was what it was..they didn't pinpoint a day OR when...Ms Young did get the right day..a few hours before it happened. THAT was a scoop...Kudo for her. reiss shows much class in what he does.
