Some very good draft news:

Why can't we face how badly we picked players in the draft last year? .

There is only one case I can think of where the Pats cut a player that clearly would have improved the roster: Justin Rogers, who could possibly been less useful than Chad Brown. (And if the Pats had to cut him to activate Troy Brown or Richard Seymour or Chad Jackson, the odds are better he would have made it past the waiver wire, since it would require cutting a player who's already on your 53-man roster, although he might have ended up in Cincinnati .)

And as DaBruinz has pointed out before, who could the Pats have taken--after round 2--that would have definitely made last year's team? Here is last year's draft list.

I think the whole draft class stunk, for one reason.

We only picked two players from the first 170 drafted - and both made the team. The rest:

171. Oldenburg OL - signed 2-year deal with Jets
180. Rogers LB - signed 3-year deal with Cowboys, special teams standout
202. Richardson DB - IR, still with team
208. Hairston RB - futures contract with Colts
209. Hilliard OT - signed 3-year deal with Colts
211. Lua LB - IR, recently cut, could be back when healthy
247. Elgin - OL, futures contract with Colts

So in the second half of a poor draft, we drafted several players who have at least intrigued teams with more roster room than us. What exactly are you looking for from the last 50 picks of a given draft?

Come on! Do we really need to list all the players that were available at the end of the fourth? What did you think when we drafted Brown?

BTW, there was plenty of room on the squad for improvement. See below for the bottom five of the team. It is NO ACCIDENT that ALL the five are defensive players.

Plus of course we had our ST specialists/starters that did little else: Izzo, Woods, Alexander, Mitchell and Andrews. I'm fine with emphasizing special teams, but five Sters is plenty. With those five, I wouldn't expect to see even more on the bottom of the roster.

S Baker
DE Brown
ILB Heron
DE Thomas
ILB Mays

So we had young depth at ILB last year: Alexander, Heron and Mays. Who was kidding who?

So who is it in the last 50 picks of the draft last year that you were wanting us to take to replace one of those 5, thereby making our team better last season and/or this one??

No it's not good draft news. Now that the Jets addressed the D-Line they can go after a pass rushing LB if they desire at #6, something that the Pats desperately need. It's not good news if your a fan of Ghoulston or Groves.

Why? Where do you think the corners we want will be drafted. Mid second to the end of the third seems right to me. We have three picks in that range and could certainly trade around, perhaps using our own third to move up in the second.

If the Pats want a decent veteran cornerback, they may have to

sacrifice some draft picks.

I look at the Colts and marvel at the fact that all of their 2007 draft

choices made the team and a UDFA started in the defensive line.

What draft board were they looking at?

3 of ours are under contract with them too.....no depth maybe?

And as DaBruinz has pointed out before, who could the Pats have taken--after round 2--that would have definitely made last year's team? Here is last year's draft list.

We traded a 3rd rounder to Oakland (overall pick # 91) for this years Oaklands 3rd rounder. Possible players we could have picked (if we didnt trade it away)....
Player, Pos , Team, draft pick # chosen
Trent Edwards QB Buff 92
Daymeion Hughes CB IND 95
Daniel Sepulveda P Pitt 112
Zak Deossie OLB NYJ 116

Even if you say, well it was good we traded that pick (instead of taking any of those 4 players above) as now we sit with Oaklands 3rd rounder (#69 this year in a deeper draft) - dont you think we could have swung a deal to trade up with our 4th round pick # 127 (Kareem Brown DT) plus either some of our 5th, 6th or 7 picks (non -comp) to move up 15-20 spots - say to pick 112 (or just before) and taken Daniel Sepulveda - awesome Punter for Pittsburgh? Or just taken Sepulveda outright with pick #91.

Yes, hindsight is 20/20 - but Da Bruinz asked for it so - and so I have given it. I would not have wasted my time looking this up - but Da Bruinz , you are so contentious with your posts - lighten up alittle. We are all friends here rooting for the same team. You could make your point without being so nasty.

PS: Thanks for the info Dryheat. That is good news indeed (this thread). This kind of info affecting draft strategy is often overlooked by the big media writers looking for a big breaking story.

Huh. The Jets signed Pace to be that pass rushing guy for big bucks. It's unlikely that they pay out another 7M per year contract to add another rookie pass rusher.
Me, I'd rather trade down and take Groves at this point.

He has the posting manners of a pitbull that hasn't been fed for a week, but you learn to tune it out. I'd be mad too if I were named after such a pathetic franchise. ;)
