You had me at "Living in NYC" as a good reason to be frustrated. Having to listen to everyone in that city I'm sure will make it tough to get over.

I think a lot of the angst and/or bitterness displayed here at time like these relates to loss of perceived superiority (leading to embarassment and ridicule) amongst co workers in opposing fan bases and on the "enemy" message boards so many here troll just like the creeps who return the favor in times like these.

Today isn't bad because the Giant fans are all hung over. Tomorrow's parade will be much worse - that's when the Jersey Boys show up on Broadway from Chambers Street to the Battery. It gets really disgusting, really fast.

There are plenty of negative things to say about this tough loss.

I had not seen this thread and was composing my own so rather than start another.

1. I’m not as devastated by this loss as some others. Don’t get me wrong I didn’t sleep and it hurts but at least it wasn’t like 2007 where the Patriots were far and away the superior team and lost on a set of freakish plays and an epic fail by a “pro bowl” corner on two of them. 06 vs the Colts if not for the flu and some home cooking by the refs they win that game. I honestly didn’t expect them to get his far and the Giants were equal with the Pats this year. Throw in the fact that the Patriots best offensive weapon was effectively useless because of an ankle and they still had a chance is amazing. Add in Brady was never the same after the Tuck sack and really changed the game. Imagine the Giants without Cruz or Nicks who aren’t equal to Gronk and then throw in a should injury throwing off Eli’s accuracy. Injuries are part of the game so these aren’t excuses just facts.

2. If Gronk is healthy I think they win that game. Which makes me hate Bernard Pollard all the more. He’s basically wrecked two Patriots seasons.

3. Brady was never the same after that Tuck sack. He had been so accurate to that point and after just wasn’t. If he hits Welker in stride that’s a TD. Welker had a chance to catch the ball but it was a hard catch nonetheless. He had to twist back against his momentum while leaping to come up with the ball. I put this more on Brady injury or not.

4. This game was lost in the first quarter with mistakes. I have no idea why Brady chucked that ball 50 yards down field ended up with the safety. He chucks it ten feet over the head of a receiver on the sideline and that isn’t a penalty. The 12 men on the field cost them a turnover and eventually 7 points. You couple these with the time of possession for the Giants they caused and it’s 9 points and at least 4 plays and 2 minutes of possession. So unlike this team to make those mistakes.

5. Patrick Chung and Kyle Arrington played their butts off. The secondary in general played much better than I thought they would. Even when Eli completed passes they had solid coverage. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the other team. That pass to Manningham was perfect. If he can stay healthy I expect a break out year for Chung.

6. The offensive line played pretty well over all. I was surprised to see a thread calling out Mankins. Yes he whiffed on one block but overall they played well.

7. BJGE is a good guy to have on your team. Solid back. Never fumbles. But Ridley needs to fix the fumbling or Vereen needs to stay healthy. Other than that one big run where they clear a hole I could run through he was averaging 3.0 YPC.

8. They need some outside receivers to make teams cover the entire field. I don’t have any faith an offseason will fix Chad. Deion isn’t that guy. Bring in Brandon Lloyd and draft a couple of guys.

9. This defense still needs a couple of game changers and some corners who can lock down playing man to man. Dowling could be one. Arrington should be the lock down slot corner. Either fix McCorty or move him to safety and sign or draft another guy. I think Moore proved he’s good depth and a dime option but I still want an upgrade.

10. The Giants are amazingly lucky when it comes to fumble recoveries. Every ball seems to have eyes to their players.

11. People calling out Welker or asking how much heartache can the fan base take need a reality check. They’re not here without Wes. When you’re as good as the Patriots have been the last 11 years there’s going to be some tough losses to go with all the amazing victories. I’ll take this over being just another team any day of the week.

12. Chase Blackburn interfered with Gronk. He pushed him out of the way with his arm before intercepting the pass. It wasn’t a blatant call and considering they didn’t flag Moore it’s probably a wash but I doubt a healthy Gronk is pushed aside.

Offseason priorities

1. Sign or franchise Welker.
2. Sign or draft two outside receivers.
3. Sign or draft an impact DE and OLB
4. Sign or draft a corner or safety depending on Dowling and McCorty.
5. Draft a center and resign Connolly for reasonable coin.
6. Resign Carter and Anderson for reasonable deals.

Great post by Ian, and in general I am admiring (but not surprised at all by) the level-headedness of most of the posters here. I think is is a big help to ease the angst for those folks who are taking it harder than some of us.

One thing I would like to throw out there is to be as sensitive as we can to those who are taking it harder than we may be. Some people may say things we find really silly (I include all posts with the name "Gisele" in this category), but I think we can just let that stuff slide for a while. Like I said to my kids last night, sometimes it is OK to be upset and vent, even when of course it is over something that doesn't really "matter" so much.

Off-topic: mea culpa regarding Rodney Harrison - see, I'm guilty of some silliness too.

I put this in a blog post, but figured I'd share it here as a regular thread:

Here are some quick thoughts on this one:

- Mistakes were critical in this game: Looking back at the stats in this game, both quarterbacks were pretty much even. However, it was two plays that really made the difference in the game:

The safety that was called on Brady on the first play of the game cost them because it gave New York two points and possession after New England’s defense had already been on the field for nearly six minutes. From there they spent another 5:28 on the field after the Giants marched 78 yards on 9 plays en-route to a touchdown to go up 9-0 early in the game. The Giants closed the quarter having held the ball for 11:28 compared to just 3:32 for New England, and that possession swing really hurt them. In the end those two points ended up playing a key factor since it could have potentially forced New York into a situation where they would have had to score a touchdown instead of a field goal to win the game, which would have likely changed the sequence of how the end of the game was handled defensively.

The interception to start the fourth quarter was also big, because again, it put the defense back on the field after they had just spent five minutes on the field while managing to hold New York to a field goal. You could make the argument that it was like a “long punt”, but the problem with that rationale is the fact that Brady made the throw on 1st down – not third down. Granted the defense ultimately held the Giants to a punt, but not until New York ate up another 5 minutes and ran another 10 plays (excluding penalties). New England did manage to put together a six minute drive after that, but that sequence essentially left their defense more or less out of gas by the time New York attempted their game winning drive.

- Their lack of a 3rd receiver really hurt them: Somewhere Bernard Pollard must be pretty happy with himself. Thanks to his injury on Rob Gronkowski, New England needed someone else to step up tonight and pick up the slack. They finally started getting some production late in the game with Aaron Hernandez, but it’s clear that the Giants defense really only needed to key on he and Wes Welker because New England didn’t really have anyone else. Chad Ochocinco made his token 21 yard grab, but from there he was virtually invisible and Brady found himself trying to buy additional time on multiple occasions to find an open receiver. Deion Branch looked slow and the drop at the end of the game could potentially force New England to take a good hard look at that position after the season.

They’ve got at least two good years left from Hernandez and Gronkowski before their rookie contracts expire and one from Welker should they elect to franchise him. One would have to believe they’ll at least try and bring in one or potentially two players to compliment them.

- It’s tough to put this one on their defense: By the time the game was over, it was obvious that we saw a tremendous effort defensively by a group that in all honesty should have just been happy with being in the position they were in. They essentially gave up 19 points in a game where it was up to their offense to play well enough to win the game, and unfortunately the Giants simply made a few plays to win the game. Granted some offseason moves are going to be necessary, but there seems to be a lot more to work with than most fans originally thought.

- Welker’s Missed a chance to shine Sunday night: With Gronkowski ailing they really needed Wes Welker to step up and have the game of his life against New York Sunday night, and it just didn’t happen. In fairness to Welker, their lack of one more threat prevented him from exploiting too many bad match-ups, but he had a couple of key drops that really could have turned the game and also potentially given them some momentum. His contract situation will be the biggest topic this offseason, and if they are able to keep him, they’ll need to finally bring in some younger and better players to compliment the talent they have with Welker, Hernandez, and Gronkowski.

- Not much negative you can say, it’s just a tough loss - Other than the fact they lost to a Manning, it’s tough to feel too terrible about this game. In the end they won 15 games with a bunch of unknowns on defense and some guys who were at the tail end of their careers in Branch and Ochocinco on the offensive side of the ball. What they managed to do was unbelievable, and the biggest problem is simply the fact that they were so close to what was ultimately a big missed opportunity. But as Belichick said after the game his players gave it all they had, and it just came down to a couple of plays that ended up being the difference in the game. This one will sting for a while, but they have a lot of young talent on both sides of the ball that – if nothing else – should put them in great position heading into next season.

Mistakes are critical in every game. The penalty for 12 men on the field was a bigger mistake than Brady's safety. That cost the Pats a turnover and 7 points. That is someone's mental mistake and there's no excuse for that.

When was the last time you saw intentional grounding called on a QB in the end zone who threw the ball 30 yards down the middle of the field before he got hit? I can't remember that scenario ever occurring before.

Ocho hardly played and Branch looks done. Ocho had respect on that 21 yard pass play and might have been a bigger factor if he could have gotten on the field more.

It's a tough loss for sure. I still hurt from it myself but on the other hand I know with some changes going into next year we can still win the division and even make it to Super Bowl 47. I'm confident folks that there's still one more ring coming for us in the Brady/Belichick era. Let's do this!

LET'S GO PATS!!!

Also lets go Bruins, Celtics, and Revs! Especially the Revs who by default will do better this year.

Because the pain couldn't get any worse, I had the TV on Comcast and Felger ,Tyand Troy were on. I figured Felger would be the usual horses ass that he has become.

But he was quite reasonable and decent in his post game thoughts. Gronk was clearly not himself last night and that hurt the Patriots offense more than anything else.

Troy came out with this bomb. He expects Gronk to hold out next year for a contract extension with big $. After last night I don't see that happening, but Troy knows NFL players mind sets more than I do.

Yeah, nice analysis, helps a little. It changed my perspective on the play of the defense. Oh well, get 'em next year.

Nice analysis Ian. People laugh (non-Pats fans) when I say they could really use another receiver, but a guy on the outside that could beat single coverage could really open up this offense.

They're going to be a contender again next year and hopefully for several years to come, it'll just be a bitter pill to swallow from now until the start of next season.
Yeah, instead of putting Ras-I Dowling on IR for a four-week injury in October--Don't you think he'd have been a lot better than the embarrassing Antwaun Molden?--in an apparent desire to open up roster space for developing players, why not go for a player who gives another dimension to the offense in big games like Indy last night?

Some of us had argued in favor of a player to stretch the opposing defense vertically, which hasn't been apparent for a couple of years now.

I'm talking about the guy we all saw for the Ravens, Torrey Smith WR, out of Maryland.

The draft had more bearing than we'd like to think on the SB. And it's so disappointing in that the Patriots were very high on Torrey Smith, but Belichick went for a guy with first-round talent and size but a history of being unable to play game in and out.

We would have won the SB with a speedster with sure hands, like Torrey Smith.

However it gets done, I'd love to see Gronk and Hernandez get extensions this offseason even though it's a year earlier (2 years left) than we usually do them - although Ty Warren did one earlier like that. We have cap room and they're so young we could do something long term that works for them and us. I want Welker back too but even though he's two years ahead in terms of FA I would prefer to get the TE duo locked up first.

Ocho hardly played and Branch looks done.
I think Deion had some of his old speed, but was consistently overlooked by Brady.

I think the SB 46 Branch was an underutilized weapon. I'd keep him another year with Welker.

Let's be clear on something: if that were to happen, it would probably be because of his agent Drew Rosenhaus, not GRONK himself. I think GRONK loves football—and the Patriots and Brady—too much to hold out.

GRONK will get extended—either late next year or early in 2013—and I doubt it'll take a holdout to do it.

I would say that 2013 is the time or even late next season. He is entering his 3rd year next year and will have a repair job on the ankle, probably not the best time for him to make demands this off season.

I want to hear the whining and "no fair" from 31 other teams as the Pats front office makes some great FA signings and I hope we're cheering their draft picks.

They have a SB team to build on. :rocker:

Like others here, I feel that this trip to the SB was a BONUS...

It came a year AHEAD of when I thought they'd get there again. Rebuilding year 2 and they were back !

A few of the older players get replaced thru FA and BB also has 4 high draft position picks in his pocket......Barring injuries, the Pats become a serious contender to go to the SB again next year.

Gronk's injury came at the worst possible time..and losing Carter earlier in the season hurt.......the stars aligned for Eli.....so be it.

Pats are looking very good to be contenders for the near future ! :rocker:

Did you guys see Seabass lay some whooparse on Justin Tuck in the second half? A big improvement over Solder.

the two of them should be monsters. I wish we'd use Solder more as a blocking TE. That leaves Brady much more protected so he doesn't get hit or hurries his throw.

Vollmer and Solder side by side is an impressive meat wagon.

Gutted by the result, a lot of almosts.

Even though I am gutted that they lost, I have to say I love this team. They have spoiled us so much regardless of the turnover in personnel. I was very happy with the secondary play. Unlike what the experts predicted they didn't get abuse. Not at all especially since they were on the field for 37 damn minutes. A lot of positives came from this game despite not winning. It just not their day I guess.

I didn't expect them to even get to the SB, so it was a bonus for me...

I thought the Giants were a better team, and unfortunately that proved to be true

...the defense needs work

...the offense needs to be more consistent and balanced

....all in all I say is was a successful year....
