Yeah, Microsoft Office. Oops, did I just say that out loud?

    I like AVG anti virus.
    www.grisoft.com

www.pcflank.com seems to do a good job of testing your defences. Does anyone know of anything that does the same?

As far as firewalls go, I have a router so it does the job.

Woohoo! We've got a Geek Squad in the forum!

    :woohoo:

Try lavasoft's Adaware to get rid of spyware. It's free, and scans real quick.

I've got a few for you as well

(FIREWALL - Replacement for Norton Internet Security)
Comodo Firewall - http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ - Free and effective

    (COMPRESSION - Replacement for Winrar)
7zip - http://www.7-zip.org/ - Good, and you get context menus, in other words, when you right click in Explorer you get "Extract..." options

(DOCUMENTS - Replacement for Adobe Acrobat)
Foxit PDF Reader - Very light, small install file size, and fast. Doesn't render images as well as Acrobat but for text and forms, this works just fine.

    (MISC)
RK Launcher - http://home.cogeco.ca/~rklauncher/ - A cool looking shortcut bar in the MAC OS X style

    (TEXT EDITING)
Notepad++ - http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm - Tabs, syntax coloring for you coders out there, in general just better than notepad

Hey, Good for you! I worked for Apple from 2001-2002. I opened the Northshore store (6th Apple store to open) and Rockingham Park. I loved it but, I moved and had to leave Apple. You'll enjoy the 25% Employee Purchase Program discount on Macs. :)

Speaking of free software, I bought The Orange Box from Valve. The deal allows me to give away a license to Half Life 2 and HL2 Episode 1. They were bundled in the package and I already owned 'em. All the receiver has to do is register with Steam. Which is free. They don't even spam your email; but you do need to have an internet connection to play every time. That's an anti-piracy protection that applies to everyone. Once you register just let me know what your username is and I'll 'gift' you the games. You download them directly from Steam and then find yourself in the most sophisticated story I've ever come across in a video game series.

    Google SketchUp 6
    http://sketchup.google.com/

A really cool 3D model maker. It takes a few hours of practice but is easier if you use with the tutorial at first (unlike me). There are some really cool models and competitions too. So there's my cool azz free software.

    Do you still work there?
I ask because I work at Apple too. :D

If you're into OS X - here is the ultimate list of apps. Not all are free , but there are over 18,000 of them and you probably don't need them all!

I'm adding ImageWell. The new version now supports ImageShack. I know the guy who created this program. He lives in NH and I actually hooked him up with his first Mac set-up back in '01.

    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11375/imagewell

ImageWell is the easy way to edit, rotate, crop and resize your image or screenshot and upload it to your iDisk (.mac account), FTP, WebDAV server or flickr, SmugMug or ImageShack. No need to launch multiple applications to add text, labels, drop shadows and shapes. At the click of button the image is sent and a handy URL is copied to the clipboard.
    Universal Binary
    supports flickr, SmugMug, ImageShack
Resize, Rotate, and Crop images easily
    Drop Shadows and Watermarks
Add shapes for borders and drop shadows to your image
Add talking balloons, thought clouds or labels
    Annotate your image more...

That sounds great! If you do get into management and they send you to Cupertino for training - let me know and we'll hook up!

    Have a great holiday!
