'Illegal Occupation': US Soldier Refuses To Deploy To Iraq

Matthis Chiroux is the kind of young American US military recruiters love.

"I was from a poor, white family from the south, and I did badly in school," the now 24-year-old told AFP.

"I was 'filet mignon' for recruiters. They started phoning me when I was in 10th grade," or around 16 years old, he added.

Chiroux joined the US army straight out of high school nearly six years ago, and worked his way up from private to sergeant.

He served in Afghanistan, Germany, Japan, and the Philippines and was due to be deployed next month in Iraq.

On Thursday, he refused to go, saying he considers Iraq an illegal war.

Just for the record, I did pretty well in HS and I had recruiters calling me when I was in the 10th-11th grade too. I think some HS's have deals where they sell their student list or something, plus if you have friends that join (delayed entry program, DEP), they'll give your info too. I had two friends do that.

Sounds like he just didn't want to go. His job in the Army was as a photographer, btw.

It's not favorable for either party here. The bottom line is he signed up.

Problem is he was discharged. I know there are re-call rules, but I don't really know what they are. But if he was discharged last year and had already started college and so forth (after he joined for the GI Bill so he could go to school) I do kinda have a problem with that.

According to the Uniform Code Of Military Justice, i believe that an order that is deemed to be unlawful or illegal or constitutionally unlawful need not be adhered to. Problem however is in proving it.

I believe that applies in most civilized nations.

Contracts are any 8 year combination if he did 6 years, he's got 2 years where he can be recalled.

If I was a soldier in Iraq I wouldn't want him in my "fox hole" the hell with him, give him a job handing out Obama bumper stickers and opening car doors for Princess Michelle.

Here we go again.. will the insanity ever end???

BTW the kid is responsible for his behavior, whether or not he claims he was seduced by the recruiter.. if you don't want to take the risk of going to war, do not sign up for the military.. it is not all that complicated.

Which insanity? Since you quoted RW saying "sure thing NEM", I assume you mean that...so I've got to tell you, GJAJ, it was NEM, he's already been verified as NEM and banned.
