New Poll: Socialism is Gaining Popularity in America | Cleveland Leader

The U.S. government has been taking over a majority stake in banks and is dictating the running of the auto industry. Add that in with talks of a nationalized healthcare system, and it's pretty clear that the United States is leaning ever-so-slightly more towards socialism.

A majority of Americans believe that capitalism is a better system than socialism, according to the Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. When asked if capitalism or socialism is a better system 53% of Americans said capitalism was better, 20% said socialism, and 27% were unsure.

After the laissez-faire 19th century Communism was quite the thing. It's a fairly simple cycle of the haves versus the have-nots, and how bad the have-nots will let things get before fighting back.

Yes, but it's pretty startling nonetheless, considering it wasn't that long ago that even the word "liberal" was considered a bad word by most Americans.

It'll be pretty interesting to see how the rich guys fight back since they've kind of shown their hand tactics-wise during the last administration and people have caught on to them.

Well you can dream can't you. I just heard a Canadian caller on the Howie Carr show about an hour ago say, "If Obama thinks socialized health care is the way to go he should visit Canada first." He wasn't a fan of it. Howie went on to add, "Obama is 50 years old and if he really thinks socialism is the way to go how bright can he be?" So true.

what do liberals have to do with socialism anyway? The overwhelming majority of liberals are capitalists.

Republican Democrat whatever. I vote the guy. I voted Libertarian for president last year. Democrat 4 years before that. And Green Party 4 years before that. And the rich are increasingly more like David Letterman, Jon Stewart, Bill Ayers, Ted Turner than Rupert Murdoch these days.

He's got a point if you look at the actions and policies of the most recent liberal governments in the UK and USA, the current administration notwithstanding.

Would you mind providing some support for it?

Edit: What I mean is that other than the new rich old rich delineation - is it increasing? By how much?

Edit 2: Also, for it to be meaningful, we would have to place numbers in context with overall totals as well.

And you'd be a solid example of someone who doesn't know what socialism is.

Asking for adult conversation from Mikey is a fruitless endeavor, he's a hit and run one-liner type.

You're feeding into the neurosis of the right (and I know that's not where you're coming from). The kind of socialism we'll see, if any, is European in nature. Nationalized health care, possibly some national-private relationships on banking and alternative energy, and so on. The righties want to believe that what liberals want is the kind of socialism that Cuba has or that the Soviet Union or Red China had. No, there's no interest in that, and there's every desire to preserve the Bill of Rights. Government should be transparent enough that it cannot abuse its power. Obama believes that, and I'm hopeful he'll continue to take steps to achieve that.

A transitional social state between the overthrow of capitalism and the realization of communism.

Sounds like the ultra liberal agenda to me. And you provide solid examples of that daily.

oh so now it's an "ultra" liberal agenda. I thought you took issue with my statement that "most liberals are capitalists?" Keep shifting those goal posts....

Good google job though. And thanks for reminding us that you aren't someone to be taken seriously by claiming that American liberals want to realize communism.
