What's the advantage to having the electoral college? Why not have either a 1-1 rule or perhaps a straight forward popular vote...

    1-1 being every state = 1 point (plus DC = 51).
    and
Straight forward popular vote = whoever receives the most votes???!?

I've discussed this at length with many people...

    One Answer...

The electoral college prevents someone from doing that by giving every state, no matter their population 3. Which is why someone's vote in South Dakota is technically worth more than someone's vote in NY, or CA. The goal for president is to appeal to most Americans, not just where most people live. So giving all the small unpopulated states at least 3, they add up to something that is worth fighting for...

Because the Founders didn't want a direct democracy but also wanted the system to consider population. In your system, New York would have the same clout as Montana.

And it's dumb to think Nebraska's 1 million people voice is worth as much as New York's 40 Million... you would drastically diminish many Americans votes.

The founding fathers wanted the country represented and they also wanted to protect the election of a rogue President. If we were to be invaded by martians and they voted a martian to the Presidency the electoral college could nullify that and elect a realistic American as the President.
