Slater has broken hand

Is there a way that strength and conditioning can prevent a broken bone? I thought that was more about preventing injuries such as muscle pulls, and ligament tears.

According to a source, look for Matthew Slater to be out 4-to-6 weeks with wrist injury

and there it is.

rotoeworld

Patriots WR Matt Slater has been diagnosed with a fractured wrist.
Slater doesn't play on offense, but he's the special teams captain. The Patriots have already used their short-term injured reserve spot on Shane Vereen; he has a broken wrist of his own. Slater may be done for the season.

He's not done. He's going to have one hell of a swim move with that cast on.

and there it is.

I'm still in favor of leaving him on the roster and letting him heal rather than IRing him, if that's the timeframe. In general, I think that having a guy of Slater's caliber for the second half of the season and into the postseason provides more benefit than 4-6 weeks of a guy who's most likely just going to be a gameday inactive during that time.

I would certainly agree with you and I think most would.

The question of course--is how Belichick feels though.

The Patriots must truly have the most inept strength and conditioning coaches in the league. Really embarrassing.

I thought you were being sarcastic but you're totally serious... :bricks:

FWIW, New England had the 9th-fewest games lost by starters last season.

NFL team-by-team injuries: Can Cowboys use health as an excuse? | Dallasnews.com - News for Dallas, Texas - SportsDayDFW

The team that led the league in fewest games lost last season, the 49ers, has not had much luck this season. Michael Crabtree, their #1 WR was seriously injured and will miss a huge portion of the regular season. Patrick Willis broke his hand but was able to play week 1, although he is not recovered yet. And the 49ers had 4 starters leave the game with injuries last night.

Injuries are a part of the game, and they can happen to even the best conditioned teams. Don't make this into something it isn't. Don't make things up. There's way more than enough of that going on already, quit adding more bull**** to the pile.

So much for my hope that Slater would emerge as the secret deep threat for the offense.

The brazzers and porn booth comments somehow altered my ability to read because it took me 3 times before I realized you weren't saying that Slater would emerge as the secret deep throat.

I agree with this nonsensical to the point of insane comment.

Score! I was hoping someone would do a bit of research and post it to provide perspective.
Fact of NFL: virtually all teams suffer crucial injuries to crucial players over the course of a season (the 9ers were a semi exception to the rule in 2012). It's one of the reasons, but certainly not the only reason, that one must wait until late November and December before passing judgment on a team. The face/ability of each team is changed by that time, and one of the reasons is injuries.

I'm excited to see special teams speedster Blount step into the gunner role.

borg did I tell you....you are my favorite poster? Great minds think alike.:D

Brazzers? Porn booth comments? I think I need to the read the first (40-post) page of the thread,
instead of just jumping to page 2 like I had done.

And what's even worse is that we should have that player on our team as a current DT, and backup position to Wilfork. ;)

Cofield had potential, but unfortunately we let him go.

When did we have Cofield?

Matt Chatham comments on Slater's injury:

Folks may not immediately see the impact losing Matthew Slater will have on the Patriots. Game broadcasts barely show it. But it will be huge.

(Responding to question on 'Who steps up in his role? McCourty?') - No, not likely. But great question. Not sure who the other gunner will be..we never see him. Likely someone different on each of the four ST units.

(Responding to comment that 'For my money Matthew Slater is the best Special Teamer they've ever had. First to the ball on every single punt.') - Best at that particular ST position, no question. It's a different job than a player like Izzo had, so I wouldn't compare the two.

(Responding to question, 'When did he break his wrist? He covered every single punt in the 4th quarter. And which wrist was it?') - Not sure--although you can play with a break in-game (I've done this; Vereen vs Buffalo). It's after surgery when you sit.

(Responding to question, 'from time to time we see DL or LB play w/ cast...any chance he does same given he's primarily emergency WR and doesn't "need" hands') - Casted & broken is one thing, but reports have him down...guessing that means pins/screws/plates that need to set, heal.

(Responding to question, 'better than Larry Whigham?') - Slater is best NFL ST player in that role in last 14 years since I started following it closely. Kinda not close..

(Responding to comment, 'Previous bests were: Izzo, Troy Brown, and in the Jurassic period, Tatupu. Slater is better than any of them.') - Like comparing LBs to CBs to QBs to OL. Slater best at his job, but can't do stuff others on your list did--& vice versa.

Well, I figured it would be only a couple of weeks type of injury since he doesn't really need his hands as much as other positions as a gunner. I do agree with Chatham that his loss will be significant. Luckily, his role on kick offs aren't as important anymore with so many touchbacks, but he will be sorely missed on punts. The guy is always the first guy to the ball.

Okay. So when do they put him on the PUP list? He's just a special teamer that should've been cut anyways.
