"Every company saddled in debt and dependent on consumer discretionary spending is in trouble. Amusement park operators are certainly no exception."

Six Flags Files for Chapter 11 - WSJ.com

Anything that has to do with recreation or vacation destination is hanging on by a thread. But go ahead and believe the eoconomy is turning the corner and headed toward recovery...even though it isn't.

They have nobody to blame but themselves, they were in trouble well before the economy went south and shot themselves in the foot with their one track minds that didn't change as the years passed recently(more coasters! same ones just repainted! high prices!)

They need to sell off a couple of parks and lower prices if they want to survive.

    Regardless of whether they were in trouble prior to the recession, what I said;

    ...Is still true.

That's a great point. What a joke the petroleum industry has been since the early 70's.

While other service industries and entertainment industries might have direct ties to the economic problems Six Flags is self inflicted and has been going on for 11 years+. It's not due to the economy, it's due to their own actions that caused the problems for the company.

Even if this was a great economy they would still have financial problems and would be filing Chapter 11 protection. It's not related, just coincidental.

And you're an expert on the subject? Do you have proof they'd be filing chapt. 11 even if the economy were booming?

That's like saying that GM would be filing chapter 11 even if the economy were doing well.

Could have happened five years ago: CoasterGallery.com -- Six Flags sells numerous parks...

Came close three years ago: Six Flags Considers Selling Elitch Gardens - Money News Story - KMGH Denver

A closer look at their financial problems including comparisons on the LOSSES and DEBT that happened BEFORE the economy tanked: For Six Flags, Debt Squeeze Looms as Latest Hurdle - washingtonpost.com

They almost did in 2006, their stock was in the tank and they had to get 35,000 worker buyouts and a better bond rating to stay afloat.

Not to be a wise arse...but what is the difference between those years and this year? I think we can agree that's a tanking vs. a booming economy. Even your links tell us that they always seemed to find a way to pull through before.

Although, I do agree that the co. has been run horrendously and it just seemed like a matter of time.

    That's brilliant, PR.

The Six Flags season is 3 weeks old and you think SUDDENLY they went down the tubes.

Snyder took it over in 2005 by proxy vowing only he could save it from bankruptcy.

He ran it just like he runs the Redskins.

Good morning shmessy! How are you? Why is it that you never point out the things we agree upon?

I wasn't referring to success or lack there-of my friend. I was referring to "prices creeping up" (see Scout's post) as in "price fixing" and the general shadyness of that entire industry since the 70's.

That's what the hell I was talking about. :D AW-ITE? We good now?

The industry isn't a joke. The consumers of it are.

That industry has been unmatched in its skillful playing of the consumer and governements. I wish some other industries could have 1/4 the success of the petroleum industry (just not at the same cost to humanity).

    You mean Rupert Murdoch's WSJ?

He bought it last year from the family that had owned it for decades.

Please don't confuse THIS paper with the Wall Street Journal of the 20th century.

I guess we disagree...I think the industry and all their lobbyists SUCK. I think it is and has been the most corrupt industry in history. No industry has been dirtier than the slimy oil tycoons. Especially the ones based in the US.

Did you wake up in the wrong bed?....I mean, the wrong SIDE of the bed today?

Stop acting like we're on opposite sides of the political spectrum when we're actually very close.
