    I (gasp) pretty much agree with you here Patters (wait I just threw up in my mouth a little), but I would use a different line of reasoning. Gov't has a role in preventing discrimination because the discrimination prevents other citizens (the discriminated) from living as equals. Allowing institutional discrimination would be akin to allowing something like theft, which if it is perpetrated against you prevents you from living the life you want (cue up the tax jokes!). I believe in a less intrusive government, but even I agree that a vital role of government is ensuring fair treatment of its citizens.
