Shefter is on NFL Network tonight and he was saying that the people around the Patriots and football that he's talked to are telling him they think Cassel in a Top Eight QB in the league. That's paraphrased, I didn't get it exactly right but Mike Lombardi chimed in and said he hears much the same thing. Crazy.

Shefter hears a lot of things, it's reasonable to think that Cassel is fairly well thought of around the league.

Adam Schefter & Michael Lombardi - MC one of top 5-8 QB's in FOOTBALL. [merged]

    This merits it's own thread.

ON Total Access just a few minutes ago, Adam said the Patriots and many other people he's been talking with who know QB's consider Matt one of the best QB's in the NFL. Michael Lombardi said he's been hearing the same thing.

It's so amusing to hear some of "us" saying "he had a nice year and all, but..." or call him Derek Anderson pt II

Not one of the cited QB failures put up a solid YEAR, gaining speed, lossless in December, missed the Playoff's due to a quirk - NONE.

It was further stated that if Matt were able to have been at the combine this year, he would easily be considered the top QB.

Schefter went on to say that if it's true that he's that good and your team needs a QB - you find a way to get that deal done.

This will be a blockbuster trade, especially factoring in Matt's history and the circumstances.

So the next time you want to say "well he had Randy Moss and Wes Welker" I submit you just don't watch enough football. Moss and Welker can't catch a flying turd any better than anyone else.

You are in denial if you believe this trade will happen for a couple of thirds or even seconds.

No doubt Cassel improved each and every week.

If the Patriots are this high on him one would think Pioli is as well.

Re: Shefter on Cassel as a QB

Sounds like an overrating, but try naming 10 better.
Here, IMO, are the guys, by division, who are in the argument, those not listed are clear-cut not as good as Cassell.

Note this list is not who is better but who may be considered in the argument.
    AFCE
    Brady
    Pennington
    AFCN
    Roeth.
Palmer (but i would imagine is out of discussion until healthy)
    AFCS
    Manning
Schaub(no way on my list, but someone may argue him)
    AFCW
    Cutler
    Rivers
    NFCE
    Manning
McNab (personally I think McNab is most overrated QB in the league and doesnt belong on the list, but most fans would include him)
    Romo
    NFCN
    NFCS
    Ryan
    Brees
    NFCW
    Warner
    Hasselbeck (if ever healthy again)

Thats a total of only 15 that you could even make an argument for.
In other words, no matter whether you overrate or underate Cassel he is better than more starting NFL QBs than he is not better than.

Re: Adam Schefter & Michael Lombardi - MC one of top 5-8 QB's in FOOTBALL.

I personally agree with this. Watching film of Cassel the last 4 games of the season, he looks almost "Bradyesque" at times. He really looks more like Tom Brady than any other player I have seen.

Cassel has a lot of room to improve, but the way he has worked and studied, I have no doubt that he will only get better. He has rare poise, and the mental attributes which are so key to being a great QB.

Of course it would be possible to put him in a situation with no WRs and a horrible line where he was running for his life, but in a decent situation I think he would do just fine. I can't believe how stupid teams like Minnesota, Chicago and TB are being about this. The chance to trade for a serious "franchise QB" candidate doesn't come around very often. If the Pats were on the other side of things (needing a QB to be a major competitor) they would be going after him with no holds barred.

    system qb, nothing more

this is what the pats specialize in

people want to believe in a great player more than a great system

Poker. Think poker. I've played games with "stupid" people who cleaned me out. We have try to be, say the Bucs. You want the guy, bad, but you don't know what the competition will be. You have suspicions. But if your WANT it, you can't show that or you're done for.

Re: Shefter on Cassel as a QB

You know which ever side of the Cassel fence you are on, the mitigating circumstances people will point to is the lousy competion he faced and the talent he was surrounded with. Conversely, who does'nt want a guy that can step in under those circumstance and not only play well but manage to get better. I think allot future success for MC has to do with where he end's up. He can flourish in a well run organizatin, but maybe he has'nt distinguished himself as someone who can elevate a currently poor organization. There's the rub..

Re: Shefter on Cassel as a QB

Right now, if you were looking for a long-term (> 2 years) solution at QB to build a team around, only Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger are obviously better bets than Cassel at this point. Matt Ryan looked spectacular, but has only 1 year under his belt, and rookies have been known to have their bumps (Roethlisberger is a case in point). Same for Joe Flacco. Eli Manning, Jay Cutler, Tony Romo, and Philip Rivers are all worth discussing, but I'm not sure that any is going to end up being better than Cassel in the long run. Carson Palmer has had injuries, and I agree he is off the table for the time being.

David Garrard, Matt Schaub and Aaron Rodgers are all reasonable options, but I personally doubt any of them will end up being as good as Cassel.

Everyone else has either age issues (Warner, Hasselbeck, Collins, McNabb) or a lot of other issues. SF, Arizona, Seattle, St. Louis, Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minnesota, Detroit, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Oakland, Kansas City, Tennessee, Cleveland, Buffalo, the Jets and Miami would all be better off in the long run with Cassel as their QB.

    Interesting.

Of course those same people were polled just before the season opener and they felt that Cassel ranked #32 out of 32 BACKUP quaterbacks in the league... so I'm not sure how much stock anyone puts in their opinion anymore.

Have you read what you typed?

Tom Brady was rated 6th round until he was seen playing in the NFL.

Re: Shefter on Cassel as a QB

That puts him equal to Brady, Manning, Rothliesberger, etc etc

What you anti-Casselites refuse to admit is that given playing time he has shown what very few NFL QBs ever develop: Pocket presence and ability to read defenses, to check down, and to make accurate throws under pressure.

It isn't a win-loss thing. Archie Manning was a great QB despite never elevating the Saints. Trent Dilfer was never a great QB in spite of winning the superbowl.

Or Eli Manning. His team beat the best team in the history of the NFL and he is by no mean a great QB and a very unlikely candidate for the HOF. Solid team.

And anyone with a brain is listening to this bit of wisdom: "We're not collecting talent, we're building a team."

Sure I read what I typed. I put very little stock in what the so-called "experts" think about rating NFL players.

    Period.

You apparently agree with me (unless you didn't read what you typed!)

    Less. Beer.

I'm talking about evaluating someone before seeing what they can do and after.

speaks to the system belichik has installed in NE

if cassell would have had a full camp last year as the #1 , going into the season, the pats would have finished alot better than 11-5, and probably would have won the superbowl

if brady doesn't get hurt they'd have finished alot better than 11-5 and probably would have won the superbowl
