I haven't been this outraged at the sports media for some time. What a bunch of elitist (yes, he was proud to call himself that) bullsheeyte. I have totally and completely disowned El Globo now. What a bunch of blow bag Red Sox ball washers they are! Do they forget (yes, of course they forget) that they work for and are supposed to be the representative of the New England sports fan. The Patriots, under Kraft, have been the most successful team in the NFL. Period. Despite multiple turnovers in coaches and players this organization continues to win. Yet all they can do is spew venom. No more Globe for me. Ever. Ever. (sorry Reiss)

Actually one of his better columns in awhile - he's not ripping or trying to ridicule anyone. He's right: the Pats have a status with fans and media that is unprecedented in New England.

However, if they lose tomorrow, that'll all be a distant memory.

The Pats have a status with the FANS that is unprecedented in NE. I can only think of a few in the media, who are pro Patriots. Reiss, Curran, McHugh, Pires, maybe Billy Burt. Am I missing someone? The rest of the media wishes they'll lose tomorrow.

If you read Buckley, Massarotti and Shaughnessy's shoddy football efforts this year, the barely-suppressed envy is visceral, irrational....they want nothing more than for the Pats to fail just like the Red Sox last year, to strip the aura from BB so that much-maligned Red Sox management will cease to suffer by comparison.
BSM actually had a hilarious list of massorotti's last few column headlines
http://www.bostonsportsmedia.com/

I liked Massarotti for the most part until he became a columnist. Since that time, whenever he writes about the Patriots he writes like a ninny. Check out a few headlines from Massarotti's columns: (I know he doesn't write the headlines, but these do reflect the content of the stories.)

* Behavior’s so foolish: Pats had much to lose with win

* So, they beat up Houston

* Pats are nothing special: Clearly an ordinary team

* Rout of Packers is hollow

* Is old magic missing?

* Patriots don't stack up

* Plain Pats give few answers

* Problems in the present

Do you detect a pattern here? Again, these were all columns written about a 12-4 football team.

this is hilarious

If it weren't for the fact that this IS his tone regardless of sport, I'd agree with you. This is a very bitter, mean-spirited man who would rather set his tongue on fire than say something unconditionally positive about either the Pats or the Sox. He's referred to as CHB (curly-haired b*st*rd) on a local baseball board.

I believe CHB actually stands for Curly-Haired Boyfriend, a moniker given him by that psycho Carl Everett, back in 2000-01.

What a pointless, uninspiring waste of electrons that piece of "work" was. The Glob's, and WEEI's, anti-Pats and pro-Dead Sux bias is shamefully obvious. Ironic also, considering that no Glob writers are allowed on WEEI. The bow-tied bumkissers of Morrissey Boulevard have no credibility, or integrity, whatsoever. The only writers there worthy of my time are Reiss, Peter May (basketball), KP Dupont (hockey), Jackie MacMullen, Bob Ryan (who at least admits he doesn't know football), and Gordon Edes.

Jackie MacMullen is great. She, Reiss and Ryan are the worthwhile ones at that paper. Too bad, Michael Smith and Mike Holley aren't there anymore either.

I'm listening to EEI this morning. In a rare moment, discussing the Pats with a caller, Mustard mentions the Yankees and starts to digress. The caller says "I don't want to talk about the Yankees, I want to talk about the Patriots." Mustard gets pissed. Hangs up on the caller and says that HE sets the agenda, not the callers. Speaks volumes.

Later, Mustard asks Johnson what team is it that the Pats got their extra #1 pick from. I kid you not. I don't expect a casual fan to know this but someone who gets PAID to run a sports show should. Pathetic beyond words.

I was listening to the same show and in the beginning of it, Johnson says "Let's talk football today, I don't want any baseball calls" and Mustard got mad and says "Why not?" I can't stand that guy!! A day before the Pats playoff game and he wants to talk baseball.

Why does a Yankees fan have a job at a Greater Boston sports radio station?

That is an insult and a disgrace.

Too bad , because I really like Larry Johnson.

Yes,yes and yes. Those writers you mentioned are the reason I even bother. Sometimes Bruce Allen will refer to a particularly obnoxious article by either Borges or Shaug which might tempt me to check it out,but usually it's the same old crap and I'm always thankful I didn't actually pay money to read it.
The Boston media is important and powerful because Boston fans in general are among the most intense fans in the country. As a Pats fan,though, you really begin to resent the constant mention given to the Red Sox even during the height of football season,or even hockey season for that matter.
Media-wise the Red Sox have no offseason,and it's always so dramatic(Jezuz that whole Dice-K arrival gave the OJ chase a run for it's money,then there was Doug Mirabelli's arrival by police escort just in the nick of time to catch for Wakefield...need I go on?).
That's one reason these boards and shows like PAA are so awesome.

Unbelievable.

Agreed, I adore Larry Johnson, but he can't even finish a sentence without that idiot interrupting him. I don't listen to that show very often because of Mustard, but in the ten minutes I was listening today, a caller asked Larry how he was feeling. He said he only had a couple of chemo sessions left and that he was feeling better. He asked for our prayers. I hope he's o.k. He's one of my favorites.

Whoa!
Didn't know he was ill. I admit, I really like Larry Johnson.*

* In a manly man sorta way

Shaughnessy's bitter tone is a sign of the times... he knows the football barbarians are at the gates of his baseball kingdom, and the region will never be the same again. Football is spreading rapidly in the region, even UMass is debating going Division I. They want things to be as they were, a provincial baseball town ruled by bitter baseball scribes.. but now a whole new crop of young-gun football reporters is on the rise region-wide... Reiss, Tomase, Breer, Felger, commanding the public's attention, setting the sports' agenda, displacing baseball from the airwaves and the headlines, threatening the old baseball guard represented by tenured maven "Curly" Dan.

Once again, in a football column, Curly Dan feels compelled to make a baseball comment in THE VERY FIRST SENTENCE/PARAGRAPH. I wonder what he and Lucchino talk about when they plot media strategy, Lucchino plying him with whiskey and offering pet jobs to Curly Dan's immediate family... that's how Boston works, doesn't it? The Sox knew they had to make a splash this offseason... one more incompetent year like last year and they would have become 2nd class to the Pats despite the oft-repeated axiom that this is a Red Sox region. Not anymore, folks, and they are starting to squirm. We don't need them anymore....

Wow Pony, you got BINGO! That was perfect and completely true. Thank you for writing my thoughts.

They have one writer that actually follows the team and doesn't hate them for their success.

The talk radio station will probably be talking more about trading for a backup infielder than about the Patriots during the playoffs.

They don't let globe writers use these ":rolleyes: " but you might try inserting one per sentence and rereading.

I absolutely agree. The newspapers have their own agendas, and I can't remember which one Glod or Herald that is partially owned by the Sox.

Let's go back to when the Pats won in Miami on the terrible field where Seymour blocked Mares fielg goal anf then they won on a troy brown td.

Instead of talking about the pats game. I recall the Sox calling a press conference that monday about something stupid. I can't remember what it was, but if i was a pats player I'd be miffed.

And yes I can't stand Sox talk in the heat of the playoffs. Dennis and Callahan are awful with their injection of politics like I care. It's SPORTS radio.

Relish every moment of the Pats success as it won't be here all the time. And you'll never see this again in the course of yout lifetime.

The article is awful and it's fellowship of the miserable. Didn't he write a book about that?
