North Roster game impression:

81 Alexander, Danario WR - Who?
44 Alualu, Tyson DL - 3-tech stud, could play the 5-tech but wouldn't be as dominant.
52 Asamoah, Jon OL - DNP.
27 Asante, Larry DB - Hitter, but not a need/value for NE.
68 Beadles, Zane OL - Struggled some, but the South didn't really get a lot of pressure on the North QBs and the North run game looked decent.
25 Bell, Joique RB - Yards after contact, best RB in the game.
9 Blount, LeGarrette RB - Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.
29 Brown, Chris RB - DNP, injury.
9 Butler, Donald LB - Sideline-to-sideline, but limited value for NE.
5 Canfield, Sean QB - Reserve QB.
96 Carrington, Alex DL - Solid against the run, will be more effective rushing when the DC can use stunts and opposite side pressure to help him find space to move. May be best as a 5-tech.
4 Coleman, Kurt DB - The soft coverages didn't help him, but he limited damage.
2 Cook, Chris DB - No real impression, but I recall him getting some air time from Charles and Mike.
82 ****erson, Dorin WR - Helped spring runners, may not be suited for WR, but H-back is a strong possibility.
83 ****son, Ed - I'll need to look for his blocking, but he had a nice long gainer.
72 Ducasse, Vladimir OL - Struggled some, but the South didn't really get a lot of pressure on the North QBs and the North run game looked decent.
54 Edds, A.J. LB - Good 4-3 LB, could be the WILB, but NE doesn't need one.
8 Ford, Jacoby WR - Still raw, but there's some potential value.
18 Ghee, Brandon DB - Inconsistent.
1 Gilyard, Mardy WR - Draft him mid-to-late second.
55 Graham, Brandon DL - Speed rusher, South O-line helped him look great, was manhandled at the point of attack in first quarter run.
89 Graham, Garrett TE - He helped his QB.
16 Hoomanawanui, Mike TE - I didn't notice him in the game.
77 Iupati, Mike OL - Quickness was killing him inside, NE already has that problem.
31 Jackson, Rashawn RB - Nice job at FB.
67 Lauvao, Shawn OL - Struggled some, but the South didn't really get a lot of pressure on the North QBs and the North run game looked decent.
13 LeFevour, Dan QB - Third round, decent value for NE.
28 McCarthy, Kyle DB - Centerfield, not needed.
21 McCourty, Devin DB - Solidified a second round value, good option for NE.
42 Mesko, Zoltan P - Hanson feels comfortable.
10 Miller, Lonyae RB - Was helping himself until that late fumble, still a late round option.
40 Misi, Koa LB - Remains my #1 OLB prospect, mid-second for me, probably third-fourth round for NE.
91 Odrick, Jared DL - Strengthened his late first/early second grade, remains a viable option for NE as a 5-tech.
55 Olsen, Eric OL - Struggled some, but the South didn't really get a lot of pressure on the North QBs and the North run game looked decent.
15 Pike, Tony QB - Decent reserve QB prospect, second round value.
23 Price, Taylor WR - Disappeared in the game.
90 Schofield, O'Brien DL - DNP, injured.
11 Skinner, Terrell DB - Did a good job limiting damage as a centerfielder.
56 Smith, D'Anthony DL - Good 3-tech/4-3 NT, a bit short for 5-tech, but a mid-round option.
14 Swenson, Brett PK - Okay.
65 Tennant, Matt OL - Solid second round value.
95 Thomas, Cam DL - I like him as another NT option depending on the Wilfork situation, not so much a 5-tech.
5 Thompson, Syd'Quan DB - Better fit for Indy.
79 Wang, Ed OL - Struggled some, but the South didn't really get a lot of pressure on the North QBs and the North run game looked decent.
41 Washington, Daryl LB - Nice looking 4-3 LB.
12 Weatherspoon, Sean LB - He didn't disappear in this game, we don't need him but he got'er done.
1 Wilson, Kyle DB - He's not as strong in run support as I'd like, but he could develop into a Pro-Bowl cover corner.
93 Windt, Mike - Got it done.
74 Young, Sam - Struggled some, but the South didn't really get a lot of pressure on the North QBs and the North run game looked decent.

You left of OG Mike Johnson. Any comments?

What was impressive about that run? Yes, it took more than one player to finally tackle him, but he was running upright and was checked by the DB's hit down low, if he'd had his pads down and his knees pumping that's a broken tackle and touchdown, not a pony ride.

Check his run shortly after the two-minute warning in the first half. Mayock was bubbling about him running tough, but you'll notice he did nothing but bounce off the backs of his own blockers moving laterally. He continues outside behind the block of his RT and is immediately hit by Javier Arenas and stopped cold in his tracks - yes it took another player or two swarming over to bring him down, but 6' 1/2" 245 getting stoned by 5' 8 5/8" 195 while he's got a head of steam up? That's poor.

Check him out on the first play of the fourth quarter, that's the Blount I saw in the Boise State game to start last season, it's the same Blount I saw later in the season against Oregon State, and from the box score, he's the Blount who showed up against Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Every now and again he puts together a run where he breaks tackles and plows ahead for a key play, more often he's getting stopped for a loss or no gain. He finished the Boise State game with -5 yards...after the way he shot his mouth off it's no wonder the Boise State DL was in his face.

Now go to the 12 minute mark of the 1st Quarter and watch Joique Bell take a full speed hit by Taylor Mays, spin off the hit and pick up five more yards. That kid is the RB from this game I'd want for NE.

Bell impressed me too and I also like Ben Tate, I hope we can land one of them. They look like tough runners who can bounce it to the outside and they seem to have good enough speed to break a long run.

I didn't get to see the Senior Bowl b/c I don't have NFL Network but regarding Blount you also have to take into account the offense he played in. He's not an ideal fit in the offense Oregon ran with Masoli. Lamichael James was a much better fit because of his shiftiness and explosiveness in space and ability to make people miss. Blount would've had more success in a pro-style offense where he'd be asked to pound it between the tackles. It's like giving Brandon Jacobs a handoff out of the shotgun. Not a great idea.

He does have a tendency to run a little high, which was the knock on Jacobs coming out. But Jacobs has worked on that over the years and had been running nice and low, lowering his shoulders and plowing through guys in 07 and 08. So that's something that can be worked on.

I don't suppose anyone saved the game? Could upload it maybe?

Hardy, Blount...you like taking a risk my friend.

I didn't get to watch until the 4th quarter, so I really appreciate everyone's input & commentary.

After considering the general vibe regarding particular positions & players, may I ass-ume that some of the winners yesterday were the Juniors who couldn't participate? I have a feeling that unless he weighs 350 at the Combine or fails the peepee test, my man Maurkice Pouncey won't be avail. by our 2nd-rounders.

Any other Juniors come to mind who benefitted yesterday?

I liked Tate and Coleman from Auburn. Saw them in the season and thought they were good and wasn't disappointed yesterday.
Peek looked good.
I know some are down on McCluster but I still think he's a Darren Sproles. Definitely a 3rd or 4th guy.
Jeremy Williams made a lot of plays.
Didn't see anything from Norwood. In fact I thought he was standing over the ball when it was fumbled on the goal line and didn't move an inch.
I liked Dekoda Watson as a pick below the 4th round.
I'd give Stafon Johnson a shot below the 4th also.
I'd like Manning at 22 and Cody in round 2.

Hardy, Blount...you like taking a risk my friend.

If Blount is going to go in like the 5th, he's worth the shot in my mind. He was graded as a mid-late 2nd rounder going into the year with an opportunity to improve upon that now that Jeremiah Johnson was gone and he was the main guy in the backfield. I was just pointing out that Oregon's offense didn't showcase his abilities well in my mind, as they had more of an east-west running attack rather than a north-south one. He has some holes in his game, like running a little high at times, but that can be worked on. I don't see a huge risk in taking a guy like Blount in the 5th round where it's a crapshoot most of the time.

You know my stance on Hardy. The talent is there for him to be a premiere pass rusher in the NFL and that is one area we are sorely lacking. He was considered a potential top 10 pick going into his senior season. I can't ignore the talent that I saw when he was on the field. You talk about risk a lot but is Dunlap not a risk with his supposed poor work ethic and DUI? Is Pierre-Paul not a risk with his very raw game? People get a little too caught up in the risk stuff.

There were a lot of supposed risks with Harvin last year. He came from a spread attack, he didn't have a true position, he's a "Florida WR" like Chad Jackson, he's arrogant and uncoachable, he failed a drug test at the combine, he's had trouble staying healthy, etc. It's amazing that he even went in the first round based on all of this, let alone won Offensive Rookie of the Year. I'm sorry but I can't overlook a player's talent level for some "risks" that start getting stirred up when talking about the draft. I wanted Harvin last year regardless of all these "risks" b/c I felt we needed an explosive playmaker at WR and he could help on special teams. And I want Hardy this year because he's the best pas rusher I've seen and we desperately need help at OLB and getting pressure on the QB.

Im not saying that Blount is the best choice at RB for us,Im just disputing the whole "Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane" thing. He certainly plays tough but he isnt as polished as a RB of his size should be. If he lowers his pad level, he will be a pain in the ass to tackle. Same goes for Gerhart but he isnt the athlete that blount is but he comes with less concerns. Neither are worth a 2nd round pick for us.

If you can find the post where I make a big deal over Dunlap one way or another please link it for me, I'd hate to let my alzheimers have all the fun.

I make a big deal out of risk because risk is a big deal - just ask Cincy and their boy Rey Maualuga about DUI and missing a game or two next season when Emperor Goodell levies his suspension. Maualuga fans where telling me I was silly to consider his "risk" last year before the draft, well, NE passed on him three times - I guessed right that time and I'm applying some of that same thinking to Hardy and Blount. You want to blame Oregon's offense for Blount's poor season, odd, because Blount was their starting Tailback at the beginning of the season - I guess that Oregon Head Coach doesn't know his business.

Same goes for Gerhart but he isnt the athlete that blount is but he comes with less concerns. Neither are worth a 2nd round pick for us.

Box is 100% right, bro. I see a tough guy when he isn't challenged, a ****pie when he is. You're an MMA fan, right? Assuming you are, you understand heart. There's a certain trait of agression that all good thumpers have. He doesn't have it. Good pounding backs run with a clear hatred, their anger propells them to get nasty. Stiffies, angered sheds, punishing finishes. I studied tailbacks at a high level for four years, and got reps for two of those four at the position situationally. Hatred and anger can be clearly seen. When he gets to the league, and the poons are gone, he's going to fold up. I can see it clear as day.

I don't suppose anyone saved the game? Could upload it maybe?

I'm not tech savvy, but I could mail you my PVR. My daughter would be pissed that I got rid of Guess with Jess though.

I've watched this kid in three games since the beginning of the college season, and I have the Rose Bowl recorded to watch for a fourth look.
-- Boise State minus five yards for the game, and a Safety.
-- Oregon State he had runs of 2, 2, 5 (1st dwn), 12 (TD), 3, 4, 30 (1st dwn), -1, -6 = a net of 51 yds and an average of 5.7 yds. Hardly an impressive outing.
-- I haven't watched the Rose Bowl yet, but 5 carries, 18* yds, 1 TD, 1 fumble lost doesn't fill me with an expectation of greatness. *The box score says 36, but the play-by-play adds up to 18.
-- Senior Bowl, maybe you were impressed, but the only run he had that gave me a positive impression was when he made Selvie miss in the backfield to avoid a loss and got 2-3 positive yards. His TD run he was untouched until the end zone. His other runs left me unimpressed.

If people dislike Laurence Maroney, they are really going to hate NE's power running game with LeGarrette Blount. This is not Cory Dillon folks.
