I've come out put pretty strongly for sensible gun violence reduction laws including clip sizes, stronger and expanded background checks and heavier penalties for gun irresponsibility, but its things like this that ruins anything ever getting anything done. Idiots. Great. Give all the ammunition (pun not intended) the NRA needs to scare the bejesus out of the already too paranoid to cope without a guns under their pillows crowd. Do some people ever think anything through?

These zero tolerance polices are nuts. I think as children we all pretended to shoot others.

    The nonsense needs to stop.

Need to be somewhat careful, as this article is hearsay.. the father is reporting what the child and school said..

There is no corroboration of the story(ies) by the school department... may or may not be more to the story, but suspending any elementary school child for this behavior seems excessive..

I look at these things as examples of overzealousness. With 300 million people in the country, every now and then someone does a bone headed thing, whether this or asking them to write a Nazi letter on why Jews are evil. My favorite science teacher (7th grade) when I was in public school, was a religious fundamentalist who sent a kid to the asst. principal's office for using the expressing "Oh god." (I got to escort him and was thrilled.)

I like the talking point "sensible" gun regulations. Sensible according to whom? Most of the "remedies" the so-called "sensible" support, wouldn't make a difference toward gun violence. All they would do is limit the liberties of lawful owners, and create another step for the ultimate goal, which is the prohibition of all guns.

These stupid people in these schools should be fired. The problem is, you can't regulate stupid. Some people are simply morons.

Amazing how quickly the right wing exploits this little boy and how the right lackies just follow along. This should have been nothing more than a minor little story about a minor little incident, the sort of thing that happens all the time on the right and left. I was once given several detentions for refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. I should have sued and the Asst. Principal should have been fired, using RW's "reasoning."

NRA membership for boy sparks criticism - baltimoresun.com

Criticism mounted Thursday over the gift of a National Rifle Association lifetime membership from Anne Arundel County Republicans to a boy who was suspended from school in March when he chewed a pastry into the shape of a pistol.
"It's outrageous that elected officials in our state who don't have anywhere near all the facts of this situation would choose to exploit an 8-year-old child for political purposes in a stunt like this," Anne Arundel County schools spokesman Bob Mosier said Thursday.
The night before, House of Delegates Minority Leader Nicholaus R. Kipke presented Josh Welch with the $550 membership during a Republican fundraiser that derided Maryland's new gun law. Kipke's tongue-in-cheek presentation involved a Pop-Tart fashioned into a gun and firearm safety tips.

That is so true, yet many parents are ignorant of what's going on. I could write a book about the experiences that my two children had here in the Taxachusetts public school system, clearly one of the most liberal of all.

One time in the early 90's I wanted to see my son's 3rd grade teacher and when I walked into the school the walls were plastered with VOTE NO ON #3 posters that had been painted by the children. Had those been VOTE FOR WELD posters instead it would have been rightfully viewed as illegal.

The dumbing down of our children in the public schools needs to stop asap.

I think many parents of every generation are threatened by the increasing intelligence of kids. Our nation has grown steadily more tolerant and accepting, people are living longer, people have more money, we have made huge strides in science and technology and the overall quality of life, and so on. Overall our public schools have played a key role in the progress we have made, even with their mistakes, but since Reagan we have cu tback on education too much and need to restore our public education system, including college, so it's better and more affordable, even if it means higher taxes.

Most teachers and schools do a good job, but out of the tens of thousands of teachers and staff, there are bound to be a few who aren't good. My view is that that 2-3% of any group (teachers, investors, rabbis, gays, whites, Christians, plumbers, tall people, etc.) are incompetent and 2-3% are superior, with everyone else middling.

In a somewhat related story, that has since ended "correctly", the kindergartner out in Palmer MA who was to be placed in detention for bringing a gun that was part of a Lego toy on the school bus...wont face punishment.

Where the ****** did our common sense go?

(BTW love the "Actual Size" notation put on the letter home...makes the decision makers at that school seem even less worthy of their position; that gun looks scary like an AR-15)
