Alternatives? Clearly that's just liberal crazy talk. All energy sources have problems, except oil and coal.

Nuke power has the chance of Chernobyl or Three Mile Island happening again. The hell with safety improvements and stricter regulations that make those happening all but impossible

Wind power has the chance that some poor unfortunate upper class person has to find a different route for their yacht

Solar power requires wide open uninhabited spaces but might cause shadows that shade a jackrabbit

Alternatives could be done, but opposition or the threat of opposition kills any potential project in its tracks.

And that's just the potential "liberal" arguments...that doesn't even counter the oil, coal, and auto industry arguments. If they wanted or allowed for the realistic potential for change there would be change.

    This.

In any case, maybe the better government stimulus plan would have been to set up the infrastructure to accommodate electric cars like they're proposing in Israel and Denmark. Those are small countries, granted, but even setting up the infrastructure in a small, but highly populated (and generally receptive to this kind of idea) area such as within the "BosWash corridor" might be of use. I can already hear the excuses, though, prepared and distributed by our friends in the oil trust.

Winner winner chicken dinner. Oil can own a president lock stock and barrel, per Dubya (and most of 'em), but let Shai Agassi get the president's ear and watch the petropaleoconservatives go all-caps apesh1t in here.

By the way, I am sick and effing tired of people saying countries are different sizes which explains everything about how we let our infrastructure crumble. Heard that one on fast-speed trains too.

China's about our geographic size, has four times our population, and is getting ahead of us on renewables. That oughtta make us think. Or better yet, act.

True. Only oil can produce electricity.

Coal and nukes can but nothing else is economically feasible. BTW what type of investment would it take to build an electrical infrastructure capable of handling the peak loads required to say recharge cars in the summertime while people and businesses are running ac and all the other things we use electricity for?

Grid requirements are driven by the ability to handle PEAK loads.

Liberals despise Oil Co's but they have a weird love affair with the people that sell the oil to the Oil Co's.

If we stopped buying oil tomorrow and it caused all of the middle east oil sheik's to go broke the liberals would call it "racism"

Gore uses Gas to drive his three SUV's with the ski's on the roof.

Kerry uses Gas to drive his SUV's with the surf boards on the roof.

Both of those creeps want us to ride bikes.

The answer is so obvious, and militarily smart.

Turn each home into it's own power station. If the government subsidized solar panels like they do the agricultural industry, then you would have the most sound distributed power system in the world.

We should design our power grid just like the greatest designed system we humans have ever created. The Internet.

You can't take down the internet, there are way to many "repeater" stations to ever bring down the internet.

Most houses produce energy during the day and consume at night, that excess power during the day flow into the grid for use at "gas" stations to fill up cars, and other things, and then power flows back into the home at night when it's in use.

In my research, it would cost me 60k to implement a system which would produce enough electricity at my current levels where I would no longer need to buy power from the grid.

This cost includes the installation and profit from a local company. Now if you do it yourself, you can for roughly 400.00 buy a 120w panel yourself, and install it.

That figure also doesn't come into play that I have not upgraded my water heater to a most efficient one.

Now, in my idea, the point isn't to be "off the grid" but to produce the demand for power during the day while people for the most part are not in their homes.

There are ways, but our government continues to subsidize whatever lobbyists from the old powers that be rather than doing whats right for the country. And sadly, this is what the founding fathers knew about, which is why they tried to prevent government from becoming what it is today.

All we do is protect the assets of old companies, for fear of change that might actually make this country better.

    ===============================================

In therory all these electric cars would be charging at night when there is more electricity available then during the day, the real infrastucture changes would be on the owner of the electric car to add a 220 v outlet or posibly even upgrading there electical service panel.
