Fun takes a holiday in Somerville - BostonHerald.com

Wow... Since when has Slummerville turned into Cambridge?

My childs pre-school sent home a letter saying that they were going to
celebrate Orange and Black day "Don't say the word Halloween".
Children are encouraged to dress in black and orange, but their will be
    no costumes allowed..

The letter also said that if any one parents voiced opposition to the
black and orange day, it would be cancelled.

Lucky for my child, we do not live in Cambridge or Slummerville.
As far as I know my 4 year old will be able to wear a orange shirt
possibly eat a cupcake and nobody will be offended.

and she deserves everything she gets for making ignorant, idiotic comments & rules.

I wonder if she'd be foolish enough to discourage children acknowledging Christmas...

    Next?

For someone who claims to be independent, you certainly just follow along and not think for yourself..

She deserves death threats??? Weird thought processes.

So what do you think of her beliefs Darryls?

Instead of pointing a finger at a couple clowns posts on the heralds
message board, why don't you tell us your feelings on her beliefs?

The people on the heralds message board, are not in a position of power.
They do not make rules that influence the youth of today.

Instead of fabricating stories of death threats, step up to the plate
    and address the real issue.

I live in Lexington, one of the most liberal communities in Massachusetts, which is really saying something. Even in this community, our schools have no problem talking about Christian, Jewish and Muslim holidays never mind innocuous holidays like Thanksgiving and Columbus day or pseudo holidays like Halloween. Orange and Black Day? Seriously, what is wrong with people?

Not a couple of clowns, it is pretty much every post..

Think Halloween is an incredibly stupid holiday, that does nothing but promote children begging for unhealthy crap... more corporate than anything else.

Thanksgiving is more of a family day, but most of the history part of it is crap..

Columbus Day is a mixed bag, gives folks a day off, but the atrocities we commited concern me.

I do think that it is a local decision, but will plenty of input as probably all over the right wing web sites.. hold your breath for Coulter, Malkin, Hopf and maybe even Breitbart.

This reminds me of the continual right wing mantra about state's rights, in this case it is a local decision.. and apparently mirrors what that locality is thinking.

Thank you for addressing the real issue.

I do not believe that her decision mirrors what the locality is thinking.
When the Mayor and the left leaning Capuano do not support her
decision, I am sure it is because they are hearing opposition from
    the majority of voters.

Elected leaders sometime have a disconnect with aspects of the population, see Congress... maybe they are listening to the loudest voters, not necessarily the majority.

The reality is that this will be viewed as some statement about the decay of America or Socialism rears its ugly head, see the Herald's comments, all the while it is the opinion of one principle in one school, who apparently reflecting the needs of her school.

Is she reflecting the needs of her school or the neeed of her own self importance?

We were allowed to dress up for Halloween and as far as I know, not
one person became a devil worshipper.

We learned about Christopher Columbus and the Pilgrims.
I have yet to hurt a Native American, if you don't count my going on a
hot streak at the the craps table at the mohegan sun.

What is next from these people?

Will they burn the history books?
You sure can't talk about WWII any more with out an apology from the left.
When will we give the Germans their apology?

It is only a matter of time.

"Would they burn the history books" THEY WOULD LOVE IT and you can bet they are working on it also at the rate that the Left Wing American Liberals are now turning on Israel and slobbering all over their "new love" Islam, it won't be long before they will want to apologize to Germany.

I'd have complained and made them cancel it. Then I'd have a Halloween party for all the kids in my childs class, during school hours, at my home. Black and Orange day? Moonbats need to go **** themselves. Banning recess, can't say Christmas or Halloween, Thansgiving is evil, but books like King & King can be taught to 6 year olds on ritilin, without parental notification. Heck, they call the cops on the parents who object to it. Welcome to the government run lemon factory called the public education system of Amerika.

Spoken like a true moonbat. Who's "we" Daryl?

We need a voucher system ASAP.

The kids and their parents should boycott the schools n those days to make their opinions known. If this person does not reflect the community standards then fire him/her. Death threats are wrong of course.

Don't get the opposition to Halloween. As an Irish Catholic kid, I remember it being celebrated in the church basement with a party for aall the parish kids just before we went out for trick-or-treat. I was told by a school official last year that it was born from opposition from fundamentalist Christians and (especially around here) immigrant Christian evangelical populations from Africa and the Carribean who see Halloween as sacreligious.

I agree with Khayos that we need as many holidays as we can get. I don't thinkof thanksgiving as a holiday about our "American heritage" as much as it is a chow-down with the family followed by beer drinking and watching football, then sneaking out behind the garage for a smoke. No one ever discusses Pilgrims or the quest for religious freedom or manifest destiny or the systematic genocide of native populations for the next 300 years.

I worked on Columbus day, and only realized it when my wife called me from hme to tell me what she was doing with the kids, and then I asked her why they weren't in school. What a stupid thing to celebrate unless you hate Carribe Indians or live in the capital of Ohio. I share no heritage or cultural connection with that demented murderer from Italy, plundering for Spain 520 years ago. How stupid.

    Pass the mint jelly!

    Stupid is as stupid does,

This crap is getting out of control, this is where Lib's and me will never see eye to eye, they're "HOLIDAYS" give me a facking break.....

Do we all really have to walk on pens and needles, so we don't hurt peoples feelings? We have lot's and I mean lot's of other issues to be addressing nobody should be spending time dealing with crap like this. This Anne Foley needs to get her ass kicked to the curb, she has no place in our schools or in our government!

Focus on the children like your payed to do, and less on yours and others beliefs....Nobody cares if you don't like Halloween or Thanksgiving, the rest of us do so IMO show some respect!

Christmas has been a no-no for years....
No more Merry Christmas..... You can only say Happy Holidays.

Halloween is only for the evil.
Now Columbus day and Thanksgiving are associated with atrocities..

Watch out Easter Bunny..... they left is putting you in their sights.
