Schefter mentions Patriots as potential LaMont Jordan suitors

Raiders released RB LaMont Jordan, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

New Orleans will likely pursue Jordan, but Schefter interestingly mentions the Patriots as potential suitors. Jordan has chronic back injuries and turns 30 soon, but he could function as a change of pace back or third-down specialist. He's the best free agent back available right now.

Take it for what its worth, Iam confident with Maroney, Morris, Faulk, unless Morris isnt back to being completely healthy then I could see another RB being added.

Makes sense. They sniffed around other vet backs inc. Kevin Jones & Samkon Gado, so either they want to bolster the bottom of the roster, are hedging their bets re: Morris's health, or are just doing their due diligence.

I think it's a combination of the first two.

I'd actually really like to see them bring in Mike Bell for a look to give the two-headed plodbeast that is Evans/Eckel a run for it's money ...

Unless Bell is (willing to be) a ST monster, they're not both getting cut.

Pats already brought in plenty of ST guys this offseason (Aiken, Slater), so I don't think that the RB4 will necessarily have to be a ST standout this year.

I'd much rather gain more at the RB spot and let someone else pick up the ST slack.

I like LaMont, but not as a change of pace or third down back. I remember him as a Jet as a Dillon type, a hard banger.

I'd take him over Eckel or Evans for short yardage, and it would be nice to have a RB at the end of the year. we always seem to run out of healthy ones.

Maroney, Morris, Faulk, Jordan. That's good for me. Use an OG or OT to block in short yardage situations.

As I recall, part of the reason he was such a bad starting running back for the Raiders was because his passing blocking skills were non-existent.

The Jets used him primarily to spell Curtis Martin in running situations; Herm Edwards doesn't seem to ask his running backs to pass block much, and the Jets tended to use Martin.

I don't think the Pats will be touching this one. He's predominantly a north-south runner and we've got a spread offense.

I thought maybe Bell is a better fit as a change of pace with speed but I could be wrong, Jordan could be insurance for Morris-they're very similar.

I'm not so sure about Jordan. Not so much his ability because when he is healthy and running behind a good line he is pretty good. The coaches would have to make the assesment of how much playing time this guy really wants. I'm sure most players love tons of playing time, but in his case he would have to really wow the hell out of the coaches to get anything signifigant. Would he be ok with that? That is why I have no strong opinion when it comes to filling in roster needs. I just leave it to the interviewing coaches and let and watch like a fan and see how it turns out.

Well, either the Pats know more about football and can teach better than the Raiders (certainly a possibility), and/or they plan on running the ball a lot in the preseason.
