Mostly for curiousity, I've been watching a number of Super Bowl tickets on eBay. There have been quite a few with low prices and no bids that say to contact the seller by email (usually an AOL address) rather than using "ask seller a question" through the eBay site.

Most of these listings don't last long and are removed. I'm pretty confident that they were scams to begin with but how did someone come to that conclusion enough to report the seller as fraudulent? In some cases these sellers have hundreds or even thousands of transactions with a high percentage of positive feedback.

Are scammers hacking into legit sellers' accounts to post these? And the seller themself has the listing removed?

Anyone know more about this or observe the same thing?

There is substantial malfeasance with super bowl tickets on ebay. Craigslist is worse. But there is identity hijacking, etc. Basically, if the price is too good to be true, it's not.

Just remember the cardinal rule: "Western Union" means fraud.

If one were to purchase on eBay, pay by Paypal with insurance, is there anything further you should do to protect yourself?

Pay thru paypal w/ a credit card, that way if something is not right, you can have your credit card company go after paypal for a chargeback.

I'd say that's the best way to protect yourself. If you buy from an established, reputable seller you should be safe. Only pay via PayPal. Verify beforehand that the seller has the tickets IN HAND and will ship them out immediately to you (and is not, like, promising to deliver "by a certain date"). Request a tracking number.

Ask where he got the tickets. Maybe he got them from a season ticket holder of the NFC team, and you could easily be sitting in a section that is 99% Cowboys fans (or Packers fans or whichever NFC team is going). Maybe that would bother you, maybe it wouldn't.

Feel free to negotiate beforehand. A seller doesn't want to get stuck with the tickets and may get desperate as time passes.

IMHO, the wisest move when time is short is to use buy-it-now and not get involved in auctions where you may get outbid at the last second... there just isn't enough time for those sorts of games...

    This is your only failsafe.

Trust me, using PayPal without credit card is not a good idea.

    PayPal insurance doesn't pay.

Unfortunately there is substantial malfeasance with Super Bowl tickets everywhere. Be especially wary of travel agencies that promise to get you the tickets by gametime out in Arizona. All too often these agencies leave you high and dry.
