French President Nicolas Sarkozy spoke to students and faculty at Columbia University:

“Welcome to the club of states who don’t turn their back on the sick and the poor,” Sarkozy said, referring to the US health care overhaul signed by President Barack Obama last week.

From the European perspective, he said, “when we look at the American debate on reforming health care, it’s difficult to believe”. [...]

Then to hearty applause, he added: “If you come to France and something happens to you, you won’t be asked for your credit card before you’re rushed to the hospital.”

Think Progress Sarkozy lauds the U.S.: ‘Welcome to the club of states who don’t turn their back on the sick and the poor.’

When has this ever happend in the US?? Never, of course, but wait until there are no doctors, then it will.......

Are you seriously posting something from the President of France, saying that we should be more like them??????

Some say they have evolved and realize the folly of such.. after they were invaded twice in the first half of the century, decided that peace was a better alternative..;)

It does not go away does it??? Kind of there is always something there to remind us, whether if be a family who lost a son or daughter, a crippled vet or our economy, defense contractor fraud, or the collateral damage of killing women and children.. our 1 trillion dollar waste of money..

Every country has issues, but some do not lie about pretenses that lead a country to never ending wars.. and a subsequent financial mess..

It is what it is, no defense of France, except they stay out of wars... for that they deserve praise..

    Grudgingly.

French aversion to war is more recent than WWII though. It took a few years of brutalizing the Algerians before France really backed off of war.

The best offense is a good defense. They have neither, hence they don't fight much anymore.

    1. the french still pay far less for healthcare than we do

    2. the reason for their high tax rates are because they have lots of other social programs (i.e. they'll even send you a nanny to your home when you give birth to help take care of your family)

    3. Look at Japan, they have a similar setup to canada/medicare (they have price caps on medical procedures as well) and they have a similar tax rate to the US

but it still doesn't change the fact that these countries spend less than half what we do on healthcare per person.

"the french still pay far less for healthcare than we do"... according to what?

The Japanese system is an interesting comparison... I wonder how much they spend on R&D?

Ahhh...the administrative costs are double here, plus....lets not forget executive bonuses and excessive salaries.

and we wonder why we spend twice as much as the next nation to get the 35th ranked healthcare system...
