Rick Santorum To Puerto Rico: Speak English If You Want Statehood

Unfortunately for Santorum, the U.S. Constitution does not designate an official language, nor is there a requirement that a territory adopt English as its primary language in order to become a state.

Congress would have to give approval if Puerto Rico is to become the 51st state. Although Congress has considered numerous proposals to make English the official U.S. language, none has ever passed.

    He's gonna flunk nomination 101 too:p

Not exactly the same but I wonder how many people remember Obama wants speaking English a requirement for Illegals to gain citizenship? If Santorum came up with that one I wonder how everyone one would react?

When the Constitution was written it was assumed that English was the language....very little Spanish or other languages spoken in the 13 original states, and of course all out founding documents laws and Court opinions were all written in English.

Better to stick with the Santorum as religious nut meme, this one is lame.

LOL If Santorum ever said he'd back a plan to allow any type of amnesty and eventual citizenship for the illegal aliens already here he'd lose his entire voting base.

And Obama didn't say they'd have to speak it, only that they'd have to learn it. (As well as pay a steep fine, go to the back of the line and wait 10 years.)

Yeah I guess even learning English for Amnesty might be beyond Santorum's vision....but MrsP. learning English vs speaking it is a difference without much distinction isn't it?

Not really. I grew up in a neighborhood full of polish and italian speaking families. The "grandma's" and "grandpa's" all acted as if they didn't speak or understand a word of English - but they did. The fact that they could not speak it fluently had nothing to do with how well they understood what they were hearing. If no one else was around to "translate" or to answer for them, they generally did just fine on their own.

Even now, when I worked for the Chinese doctor, we had a large number of Chinese patients - a few of them really couldn't speak English but the majority, when they called to make appts., would ask to talk to someone who spoke Chinese - but if I was the only one there they'd do just fine making their appt. with me. Ditto the Spanish speakers.

It's hard to live in a country for several years and not pick up at least a working knowldege of the language.

You said they "assumed English was the language." I showed you how they did not make any such assumption nor did they attempt to make it be so.

English-Americans held most of the political and economical power in the colonies - the people who write the laws generally write them in their own language - that does not mean they are the majority (which they were not) or that they forced everything to speak the same language they did (which they did not.)

And what's with the "native tounges [sic] of slaves?"

I could have told you that Santorum flunked Constitution 101 when he said that it gives us "too much freedom." That one quote was enough for me to never ever consider voting for him. Ever. And since hearing that, he's just constantly reinforced that opinion. Luckily, he won't be the nominee, because I wouldn't be able to pick between him and Obama. My head hurts just thinking about it.

So you favor going by assumptions of what the founders intended, not the actual words, 13?

If he knew the Constitution, he'd know there's nothing in it which states that, in order to become a US state, that English must be the principal language.

Where's the "federal law" he states exists?

"Like any other state, there has to be compliance with this and any other federal law," Santorum said. "And that is that English has to be the principal language. [/B]There are other states with more than one language such as Hawaii but to be a state of the United States, English has to be the principal language."

That's actually in the constitution. It's right next to the clause that says the federal government has the authority to mandate each and every citizen of these Uinted States purchase health insurance.

I was stating a historical fact that is supported by the documents we use to rule ourselves to this ay.

From the founding of the republic tellme of a law or judicial document that has been published in a language other than English. That could be a Federal law or judicial opinion or any at the state level you are aware of.

Given the current situation legally making English the official language would probably be a good idea.
