Saugus school head yields, allows Santa in schools

    December 20, 2011

SAUGUS, Mass.—Santa Claus will be visiting Saugus schools after all.
The town's superintendent on Monday announced that he was ending a nearly 50-year-old tradition of off-duty firefighters dressed as Santa visiting elementary schools to hand out coloring books and crayons to children because he said Santa is a religious figure.

He reversed his decision later in the day after an outcry from firefighters and citizens who say Santa is a secular symbol. Fire Chief James Blanchard tells The Daily Item of Lynn (The Daily Item: Saugus super backs off anti-Santa clause) that he was "taken aback" by the original decision, but is glad it was reversed.

School Committee member Arthur Grabowski says the superintendent didn't consult the board before making the original decision he said was "political correctness gone awry."

The superintendent says the tradition will be revisited next year.

I’ve always said this supposed “war on Christmas” is little more than a Bill O’Reilly/Fox News ratings creation.

    Now I’ve changed my mind.

Yeah but it's a slippery slope. You allow firefighters to play Santa and before ya know it Christianity is the mandated religion of the country.

Seriously, Santa played by firefighters appearing at a school is a violation of the law? I'm no law expert but if it is technically then somethings wrong with the law and I don't buy that the only interest of the school board is to follow it. I admit I'm cynical but I think these busybodies spend way too much time looking for technicalities to push for their personal agendas. I think they're just as paranoid as those Fox folks that blow the "War on Christmas" way out of proportion. Idiots, the bunch of them.

The percent of people employed in public education who support a more socialist America indexes far above that of the average American.

    Pretty sad....

Compare to the uproar in RI that ruled the airwaves and news media for about three weeks of idiotic banter.. our jackazz governor decided to call it a "holiday tree", the extremists and mediots got their depends in a bunch and wanted it to be called a "christmas tree"..

Nothing was resolved except more polarization of the populace.. my view is who really cares what you call it.. why is there is a need to call it anything. It was much ado about nothing..

What drives "The Christmas Santa Haters" nuts is knowing that on CHRISTmas morning millions of people all over the world will be sitting in their living rooms with their Decorated CHRISTMAS TREES opening gifts, drinking Egg Nog, listening to CHRISTmas Carols while enjoying this beautiful worldwide holiday.

"The CHRISTmas Bashers" wake up on CHRISTmas morning, they go into the bathroom and releave themselves, then they go back to bed but they still can't help but think about all of those millions of happy people sitting in their living rooms looking at their beautiful CHRISTmas tree and they can't do a f-cking thing about it.

    MERRY JESUS CHRISTMAS
    GOD WILLING

    :singing:
    "jingle bells"

Don't Worry Kids, CHRISTmas is here to stay.

    I second Darryl here.

I presume you have a source or a link you've forgotten to share with us.

    Could we see it, please?

I know a lot of teachers. My sister is a teacher and a close friend's wife is a teacher. Both in Massachusetts of course. Whenever I attend their parties, you would not believe the stuff that comes out of their mouths.

Much of it downright straight desire for a socialist nation. They tend to believe that no one should be living in poverty.

I'm sure there are some conservative teachers...but in MA, they're few & far between.

Then there is my alma mater...the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA. Their economics dept. faculty was blatanty Marxist...and it STILL is! No public university should be allowed to have their faculty preach Marxism...I was liberal back then, but their sh1t drove me insane.

Good God!! What an awful thought.

How many people do you think should live in poverty? What's an acceptable number to you, PR?

And please, excuse me if I ask once again - your source? Obviously you know something the rest of us don't know - and I can't believe you'd be silly enough to base a statement like The percent of people employed in public education who support a more socialist America indexes far above that of the average American. on a few parties you've attended and a school you went to 30+ years ago.

P.S. Those links you came back and added do nothing to bolster your sweeping claim, btw.

Since this involves one individual and one school, and the decision was very quickly reversed, I think this news is about as big as the Harry Boy's shocking story of the child's Christmas Tree ornament dedicated to Obama. The good news is that the decision was reversed and the largely secular Santa will be allowed at the school.

Compare this to the silence of the bigots, I mean conservatives, with regard to the extremist Christians getting advertisers to boycott the tv show All American Muslim, since it depicts ordinary Muslims rather than sabre rattling terrorists.

Advertisers cave to pressure over 'Muslim' show

I could care less whether you believe teachers tend to be more socialist than the avg American or not. I certainly believe it. If you disagree, that's F&D!

Regarding poverty...first we'd have to define poverty. Is it relative to other Americans or to poverty on an international scale? The poor in America live a life of luxury compared to the poor in Indonesia.

Eliminating poverty is a common goal of all people...but at what cost to others? Would I sacrifice my own future by paying 20% more in taxes to eliminate poverty? No, I would not. I'd prefer to help one of my brothers pay for the college education of my nephews and niece so that their future is secure...but that's just me.

It's not an awful thing to believe at all. But poverty has existed since humans began to live in colonies. The only way to eliminate it is to move to socialism...so it's a catch-22. Which is why I stated socialism is a commonly held desire for many teachers.

Really? A few days ago such a thought would never have crossed your mind.
Families helping extended family certainly was not "you."

They absolutely prove beyond any doubt that the Umass, Amherst economics faculty is socialists. In a recent publication of my UMass newsletter, a former student wrote an article about how when he attended graduate economics in Chicago, people gave him crap because they all assumed he'd be Marxist.

UMass IS an example of public education MrsP.

Geez, PR. Think about it once in awhile before you open your mouth.

The reason "we" don't have poverty on an "international scale" and the reason our poor currently live in the "lap of luxury" compared to the poor in Indonesia is because "we" currently have the very social service system and programs that you'd like to get rid of.

I still have never heard of people who do that. There is a difference between "Extended" family and "Immediate" family. My nephew is immediate family. I don't need to announce everything I do in my personal life, but for this example, I thought it was appropriate.

I've always helped financially with one of my brothers children. I gave my older nephew my old car and often pay for repairs on it. I give him gas $$ almost every week when he doesn't have a job. This past summer, I employed him and he did a lot of work on my yard.

I always believe in family first. But I don't consider brothers and sisters, extended family. I was talking about aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.. I would not give $$ to anyone outside my own immediate family on a regular basis. Especially if anyone in my immediate family needs help.
