As further proof that the right-wing media is corrupting the nation, they gave scant attention to the powerful speech that Sandra Day O'Connor delivered at Georgetown University:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,,1729396,00.html

Sandra Day O'Connor, a Republican-appointed judge who retired last month after 24 years on the supreme court, has said the US is in danger of edging towards dictatorship if the party's rightwingers continue to attack the judiciary.

In a strongly worded speech at Georgetown University, reported by National Public Radio and the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, Ms O'Connor took aim at Republican leaders whose repeated denunciations of the courts for alleged liberal bias could, she said, be contributing to a climate of violence against judges.

Ms O'Connor, nominated by Ronald Reagan as the first woman supreme court justice, declared: "We must be ever-vigilant against those who would strong-arm the judiciary."

She pointed to autocracies in the developing world and former Communist countries as lessons on where interference with the judiciary might lead. "It takes a lot of degeneration before a country falls into dictatorship, but we should avoid these ends by avoiding these beginnings."

Strangely, Harry, the media completely ignored Sandra Day O'Connor. It's hard to understand, especially because her remarks were quite bold for a former Supreme Court Justice.

Yeah, like in the cases of cities strong-arming homeowners to give up their property rights for casinos and waterfront developers. I believe O'Connor voted for the property owners in the recent ED case? Was she wrong there and right about this?

It's not a contradiction to agree with a Justice on some rulings but not others. You'll never find one person on the Supreme Court (or anywhere) you agree with 100%.

Thats a good point. I'd love to read her decision on that one. She DID vote with KELO! So, whats your point?? I'd say that demonstrates consistency.

I think so, too. I was referring to Patters' opposition to judicial "interference" on ED issues. He thought it should be left up to states and localities because the issue was "too complex" for the SCOTUS to articulate on.

Oh...got it. I still wish Weare had approved the hotel take-over. Lost Liberty Hotel has a nice ring to it...and I think it would give me reason to visit Weare.
