I had just read the thread where they mentioned that Brady adjusted his contract and such and took a look at the futures page that Miguel has set up and I am a bit frightened.

Going into 2008, the Pats currently have 39 players signed and only 13.4 million in free cap space. Now, I do understand that Stallworth's cap hit and Washington's cap hit are fake. That does free up another 12 million. However, that doesn't include Asante and it doesn't include this year's picks.

Nor does it include the 5 1st day picks that the Pats are likely to have next year.

13.4 million to sign 15 players, 8 practice squadders, and cover people on IR isn't that much...

Now, ways that the Pats can free up a LOT of money? Cut Rosey Colvin and his 7.3 million contract. Or negotiate an extension. Negotiate an extension for Seymour, lowering his cap hits. Cut or re-negotiate Kevin Faulk's contract. Cut or Negotiate an extension for Harrison if he doesn't retire.

2008, almost certainly, looks to be a re-tooling year. Regardless of what happens this year.

Yes, I expect a lot of changes next year. We have definitely loaded up for a SB run this year at some cost to the finances for next year.

The other extension they can do is Brady to lower his $13M cap number. Right now he'll be 33 years old when his contract expires, we can probably add 2-3 years to it at which time he'll be calling it a career.

I'm not looking forward to this but Harrison (retirement), Colvin (cut), and Samuel (franchise and trade) may not be here in '08.

I also forgot to mention that next season, Warren will be looking for an extension that will probably add 2-5 million to their cap hit.

I'd be sad if we cut Colvin.

Seems like the players the Pats will need to dump are likely expendable. AD Thomas can mix in for Colvin if Colvin doesn't want to restructure. Meriweather doesn't replace Harrison, but James Sanders is being groomed. Faulk will likely restructure, but is very replaceable. Troy Brown, Bruschi and Matt Light not replaceable?

Now, I don't want to lose any of these guys, but I don't think it is the end of the world.

Not to mention, can you imagine how much the cap will increase after next season?

Well just because he's looking for it doesn't mean he'll get it :)

Personally I would be fine with putting large cap dollars to keep the DL around but it may not happen. And we did draft a high upside DE a few days ago . . .

So we are only going to have 25.5 million in cap space less Meriweather's cap number?

The cap will increase significantly next season, although not the leap it saw this past offseason. Did your calculations figure that?

You really are a skunk at a lawn party. When you go to weddings do you site the current divorce statistics in your card? Let's enjoy the upcoming season and all of the potential it holds.

That seems like plenty of money to me. Draft picks don't take up that much space and they can always rework some contracts to create some wiggle room.

This is IF we don't keep Stallworth, Washington, and Moss AND don't sign Samuel to an extension.

If Stallworth and Washington's contract's have fake years (they do), than 13.4M isn't an accurate figure. Also, with the cap increase they'll probably gain 5M in cap space.

OK, let's get down off the ledge. This is a time to enjoy the team and prospects for the coming season. I have a vague feeling that the team's front office is able to manage the cap.

I think there's at least $5 million in salary that can be stretched out along the remainder of the existing contract as well

But overall I don't see the cap as anything to overly worry about. Colvin is certainly a candidate for restructuring - which means he's got a major incentive to have a monster year.

Heck - as you pointed out about Stallworth and Washington, half the team has a financial incentive to have a monster year.

Also keep in mind that the rookies are all subject to the rookie salary cap, determined on a team by team basis. It would be interesting to look at what the rookie salary cap is this year, extrapolate to the Patriots next year, and see how that plays into DaBruinz overall number schemes

Look at the colts. They had practically zero cap space but they were able to get Manning, Harrison and some others to restructure their contract's. I don't think NE is nearly in the bad '08 cap situation some think.

So what are the odds that we pay both Stallworth AND Washington the big roster bonus, AND we give Moss a new big contract?

If all three pay so well that we cannot afford to let even one go, then we will have the best set of wide receivers in this and all alternate universes from here to infinity.
