There is no time for the Patriots to respond to this allegation sufficiently to defuse the scandal prior to the game. It was perfectly timed, the eve of the SB, to provide maximum distraction to the team, and maximum damage to the organization's brand name, regardless of the truth. Tomorrow a billion people will be watching, and this story will be broadcast. There is much more at work here than Tomase. Tomase is just a stooge and people should recognize that. Whatever Tomase possesses was given to him at just the right moment for a reason. A condition of the tip may have been an agreement to publish the day before the game.

Why did Walsh's name emerge on the Friday before the SB in the NYTimes? The story had been floating around for months. Who tipped the media in his direction? Someone with knowledge of the Pats' prior employees, even the journeyman castoffs from years ago, someone who might have overheard or been told sea-stories about supposed Patriot shenanigans from ex-Patriot employees. That kind of knowledge can only come from a close friend, a close enemy- or both. Think about the vehemence with which certain outlets who profess to have "sources" have attacked the Pats: Florio, Easterbrook, the NYPost. Whoever the source is, he seems to infect his minions with an almost pathological dislike for the Patriots.

The motive behind an act of sabotage this aggressive and vindictive is revenge. This struck me immediately as a crime of passion. IMO there are only a few candidates for the prime mover in this circus. Such a person must have the motive, the means, and the special knowledge of the Patriots employees to direct sympathetic media outlets toward a shady character like Walsh. He would also have the experience manipulating the northeast media, just as was done when the original "videogate" tempest in a teapot was fomented.

Goodell recently stated that he had believed the "videogate" materials to have been secured at the league office until blindsided by Fox's broadcast, and gave that inability to secure the material as a reason for its subsequent destruction. Jay Glazer, the Fox reporter who got the scoop, has stated he will carry the source of that video to his grave. This suggests to me that the source is a prominent individual in the league who had access to the tapes and has sympathetic ties to the NYJets. The Jets benefited most from the broadcast of that tape. Glazer is a NY boy who I believe grew up a NY Jet fan.

I believe the orchestrated firestorm that broke at the time of the original "videogate" and this sabotage on the eve of the SB betray a pattern. This pattern IMO is consistent with the work of a single mind, one whose motive is revenge, one who has access to detailed knowledge of the Patriot organization, one who is adept at manipulating the North East media (ESPN, NYPost, it's subsidiary the Herald, the NYTimes). I believe that person, the prime mover behind this eruption and the last, is Mike Tannenbaum, GM of the NYJets.

Tannebaum is young enough to be ruled by passion more than reason, competitive enough to resent the Patriots' dominance, loyal enough to his organization to have inherited a pathological hatred for BB since BB resigned as HC of the NYJ, familiar enough after years of competition to have tracked Patriot hiring practices, educated on the Patriots' methods by Mangini, in close proximity to former Patriot employees like Scarnecchia, Daboll et.al., adept at manipulating the Northeast media after years of doing business in NY. The collapse of the Jet season after "videogate" and the ascension of the Pats to immortal status was the ruin of all his hopes.

IMO this sabotage has Tannenbaum's fingerprints all over it.

man, u sure have this well thought out....

but i must agree...things are getting murky now...real murky...this isnt jsut about the pats, the league, or videogate anymore...its about much, much more, and i think we will all know of the truth at some point...

there are many forces playing right now, and the balance is very small....i wonder wut will happen, but when the truth comes out, i see more then just one prominent individual capable of spiraling downward...

I agree that this story was timed specifically to distract the Patriots from their Super Bowl preparation. I am surprised that no one in the media picked this up.

It is obvious Mike Fish has been working on his article for a while now and since he had nothing really he hadn't run with it. The NY Times forced him to show his hand. Tomase ran with his piece in response to the other pieces.

I for one can't really be bothered with this crap anymore. I'm dissappointed in the Herald for publishing such self promoting, cliched, libelous crap the day before the home town team plays is on the biggest stage in all of sports, poised to make history. It's pathetic and I will never visit their website again and hope others do not either. The story, or non story itself is one that I could care less about. I'm more into the game

I just wish Belichick would stop playing nice. Some of it may be Kraft forcing him to, but he needs to come out and defend himself. He needs to expose other people.

Fellas, to be honest with you, I think all of this spygate talk is going to spark the Patriots like no tomorrow. The boys are livid right now and gotta be frothing at the mouth.

Whoever started this all should be commended. Heck, I wouldn't be shocked to find out this was orchestrated by someone rooting for the Pats.

You guys are taking this way too seriously. Belichick doesn't give a damn what these hacks think, and neither should we.

Agreed. I'm usually nervous before a damn regular season game. Tomorrow's the Super Bowl and I'm not nervous at all - I just want to bash someone's head in.

I think the players are thinking the same thing. I hate the timing, it seems like a way to detract from the possible 19-0 finish and to discredit the team.

If this was done to distract the Patriots it will probably be a terrible attempt. Since this won't distract the Pats if anything it will have lit a fire under their ass a day before the biggest game of their lives. Media hacks trying to ruin what they have worked so hard to get all year, trying to ruin what may be one of the greatest days of their lives.

The Pats aren't going to let them triumph.

To be honest, I know the team is going to play even harder than they did before all this broke...

But I worry that Goodell needs a 19-0 team in the crosshairs like this like a hole in the head. In Goodell's mind, having the Patriots lose tomorrow is the best thing that can happen.

So the question is - will the Refs allow the Patriots to win?

Not sure if anyone is aware of Glazer's history - My best friend used to work in Sports Media. She was very familiar with the writers at the "Giants Insider", a Giant's Homer newspaper. During That time one of the writers paid by that paper was Jay Glazer.

Not that it means anything of course, but it's interesting anyway.

    Interesting analysis.

This, as with everything else that matters, will get settled on the field.

    GO PATS!!!!

Hey Pats fans; opposing fan troll here who has been given a bunch of warnings & is usually annoying.

Had to chime in that even I, as a Pats hater, think this is pretty bogus, ESPECIALLY the timing, which is good for no one - not the Pats, not the NFL, and not for fans.

I watched "Touchdown" the other night on CNBC - about Kraft & the organization he has built. Much respect for that guy; he has truly built the perfect franchise, and you know as well as anyone that this is something that worries the NFL.

The thing about what the Pats have done is that they have created a "loophole" for the FA/salary cap era that was supposed to create parity. Parity is league management's biggest priority. The current Pats have been able to master free agency & the cap; they get bargain deals on great vets who want "the ring," and other teams are not able to compete with that, at least as long as the Pats have Brady & BB.

To the league, that's an unacceptable situation. It only stands to get better for the Pats this offseason, as other FA's look at guys like Moss & Seau, and New England becomes the place to go to get the "ring". The timing of this story in particular is a way to potentially defuse that, and hurt the Patriots efforts in the offseason & in the future.

If you've ever seen Rollerball, it is similar to the situation with Jonathan E.

After watching the special on Kraft, I felt bad about this story, and bad for him. Guys shouldn't be punished for knowing how to do things the right way, and being successful. That's really not what America's about.

Anyway, just this troll's 2 cents. I was rooting hard for the Giants, and still want them to win, but won't feel as bad if the Pats win now, because what is happening right now is just wrong.

Great insight, I hadn't really thought of that perspective. Honestly Giants fans compared to Jets fans are like night and day, sorry to lump you guys in w/those cretans!
