S.F. mayor proposes fines for unsorted trash

    John Coté, Chronicle Staff Writer

    Friday, August 1, 2008

(07-31) 20:17 PDT -- Garbage collectors would inspect San Francisco residents' trash to make sure pizza crusts aren't mixed in with chip bags or wine bottles under a proposal by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

And if residents or businesses don't separate the coffee grounds from the newspapers, they would face fines of up to $1,000 and eventually could have their garbage service stopped.

    ...........

"Do we want our garbage collectors to be the meter maids of trash?" Cromwell said. "Good luck placing blame on the recycling criminal, especially in big apartment buildings. I will stop recycling if this law goes into effect just to become an eventual test case. Dictators are anathema, no matter which side of the political spectrum they come from."

    .............

The city could also levy a fine of up to $500 for the first violation, $750 for the second in one year and $1,000 for the third in a year. Apartment landlords are concerned that they'll have to pay for a tenant's behavior and won't be able to pass the fine along, said Sean Pritchard, the government affairs director for the San Francisco Apartment Association.

"How do you determine which tenant is at fault?" Pritchard said. "Or do we indiscriminately start fining all tenants for one tenant's poor choice of judgment?"Blumenfeld called that fear unnecessary, saying, "We won't enforce against owners of apartment buildings if their tenants don't do this."

People should sort their trash because it is good for everyone, not because it is the law or fear of fines...

I almost posted about this last night.

Without looking do you think people will be able to differentiate between the recyclable papers :

Cardboard, cereal boxes (without lining), computer paper, paper egg cartons, envelopes (windows OK), junk mail, brochures, magazines, newspapers, phone books.

versus to non recyclable papers :

Waxed cardboard, napkins, paper towels, paper, plates, paper milk cartons, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters.

    It's absolutely retarded.

Very funny. You know what I mean. I recycle plastic bottles, cans, whatever. But I don't want anyone getting in my face to differentiate between cereal boxes and milk cartons. Are you kidding me ?

I thought liberals were all about "freedoms". Their own freedoms I guess.

Me too, but for different reasons. California leads the nation in using alternate energies and protecting the environment. I can remember a picture in Time Magazine of a person wearing a gas mask in L.A. (smog). They have come along way and have surpassed a lot of states in environmental quality.

Those a$s holes do stuff like this to aggravate us Sensible Neo Cons, the dirty bastards should go over to Africa and tell some of those people out in the bush to learn how to keep flys off their kids faces by teaching them how to blow their kids noses and while they are there they should also tell them to stop throwing their dead grandmothers body in the river behind their Hut where they bathe and get water to boil their "monkey meat".

    F-ck California.

I may, or may not, have misread your intent.

I read it as "people should sort their trash" and I felt like it was none of your business if I do or don't.

You may have meant "if people sort their trash it should be because they choose to (for whatever reason they have) not because they're told to".

If you meant the latter, I agree with you.

That was my point, people should not be motivated by laws and fear of fines.. but for what is good for them and everyone..

There is enough for police, the courts and trash collectors to do without adding additional responsibilities.

In that case I apologize, I thought you were saying I should figure out the difference between paper plates and milk cartons because others think it's good for the earth - what the heck is the difference anyway ?

how many people really do stuff for altruistic reasons?

people didn't start conserving gas until it hit them in the wallet.
