Man I hope they don't bring this guy in.........

The Patriots are in discussions with free agent CB Hank Poteat.

New England still has the draft, but is presently looking very weak at corner. Poteat, who was a starter for the Jets last season, knows the system well.

The discussions shouldn't last long, he won't be a high paid/demanded player.

Not sure what they're talking about with a "very weak" draft at corner. It's actually quite strong for a few rounds starting in the mid first; there just isn't a sure thing top ten pick.

They're talking about the Pats roster, not the draft. ;)

Poteat....ehh...this might seem contradictory to what I just said in the Seward thread, but in this case, I'd rather earmark a spot for a draft pick to make the team. Camp fodder I spose.

I read that as the Patriots are looking very weak at corner.

Man I hope they don't bring him in as the number 1, 2, or 3 corner but I would be happy to see someone else in the CB rotation with experience in the system.

He would provide some depth and would be someone who would require a little less coaching. You need some guys who know what they are doing. Not going to be easy to train 4 or 5 corners in our system at the same time.

Plus I imagine he would be fairly cheap and could easily be cut. Right now we have very little at corner I would not just shrug off a vet who knows our system.

Poteat was a good player for the Jets last year, not spectacular, but not a liability either.

I want the Jets to hold onto Poteat, he's a pretty decent Nickel back.

I know, I'd like us to re-sign him.

    Bring him back.

He was never a liability for us. He knows the system and hell our CB's are about as experienced as a virgin going into an orgy.

LMFAO . . . OK . . . Poteat and the guy from Buffalo would more than make up for the loss of Gay and (did we have a CB below Gay last year ?). Lastly we would need someone with more upside (immediate upside not just long term) and I guess we'd have to look to the draft for that which is fine.

This guy's should have JAG tattooed to his forhead. Didn't we pick him up for a playoff run a couple years back?

I'd be fine with Poteat back as a dime guy. I was upset when the Jets got him. He's a nice, competent DB. Would certainly give us some depth and we'd just need to concentrate on shoring up the actual starting spot.

Hank Poteat is a poor man's version of my man O T I S, getting better with age. Bring him back, good nickel CB who can start when needed. He's strong, especially for his size, he is athletic, has balance and quickness to stick with his man in coverage and smarts. He also plays well in zone coverage. A valuable backup and quality ST contributor, what's not to like?? He is not a superstar but fills a role.

Yea its been a long morning for me. Woke up early did a ton of side business stuff and i just got home so dont ask where i pulled that comment from lol.

But to answer the Gay question ( <---LOL) they didnt really use anyone else at corner. They relied heavily on there safety play with Wilson and Meriweather. Spann and Andrews never had a chance.

Im really starting to focus in on more 3rd 4th and 5th round corners. Seeing what guys could stick because besides that one probable high pick theres more than likely going to be another guy we take that plays either corner or safety or even both.
