    Who Should We Bring Back?

    AVAILABLE
    Cannon, Faulk, Deaderick, Brace

SOME OF THE ROSTER SPOTS AVAILABLE
    Molden, Moore, Ventrone, Brown

    Also, Cannon could replace Thomas.

LOL mgteich, you are mean. Molden, Moore, Ventrone, and Brown occupy the spots, the spots are not available yet.
Anyway, I will be fine with all but Faulk. We don't need him, RB is not our problem right now.

A link to the latest roster:

Official Website of the New England Patriots | Team - Players

There are three players coming off the PUP list:

    Brace
    Deaderick
    Faulk

All three players are now practicing.

There is one player coming off the reserve/non-football injury list:

    Cannon

    He is now practicing.

This represents four players who are now practicing. There is now a three week window for players to either be activated to the roster or placed on IR.

For any of those players to be activated for Sunday's game, the deadline is this Saturday at 4pm. An activation constitutes being added to the active roster.

I thought I would start this thread to discuss who would be activated and who would get IR'ed. There are clearly some tough decisions to be made.

It bears repeating here that you cannot IR or "redshirt" a player who is not injured (e.g., Vereen).

If I had to guess, I would point to Donald Thomas and Ross Ventrone as two players who will probably be cut to make way for two new players. Maybe also one of the following: Adams or Mouldin.

We may IR an active player to make more room, but other than Fletcher and Dowling, all players have been practicing lately.

Obviously we are thin at DL and interior OG (Wendell is now the backup C). We aren't thin at RB, but Faulk offers great pass protection in addition to experience so he would be a difficult decision to IR.

Of all four players, I think Cannon is easiest to IR- after giving him 3 weeks of actual practice experience, although I personally hope this wouldn't be the case- I think he gives us major upside talent-wise and is a big upgrade over Donald Thomas who is the sole backup OG.

I believe the first 3 practiced briefly last week so decisions on them have to come by next week. Cannon only came off this week so he has two more weeks before a decision has to be made. I would imagine Vollmer's condition is a concern in that regard. Heading into November-December I'm sure Bill doesn't have a problem carrying 5 running backs. We did it all last year even though one never could get on the field - and we could have certainly used him.

Yes, this is week two for Brace, Deaderick, and Faulk; week one for Cannon. All four of them have been unlimited in practice so it's almost certain that we'll see one or more of them in the Steelers game.

On the other hand, I wonder if Fletcher goes to IR because he has been missing practice with that nagging injured thumb of his (sustained in the 2nd preseason game vs. the Bucs).

Dowling is another possibility- he seems to have had a setback with his hip.

Seems like we potentially could see all four of them activated.

Yes we could, although Cannon is like as not to be held back for another week or so of practice, as he's a rookie.

I can see Fletcher and Dowling both going to IR. That leaves 2 more choices and of those, sad to say, Ross Ventrone will probably be sent to the shadow roster and kept on speed dial. It's the 4th one that bothers me because it will be a VERY hard decision to make.

Note that were we to activate all 4 out of the dog house none of them play STs excepting Faulk as a PR so we'd be impacting a less than stellar part of the squad.

It's hard for me to see Dowling to the IR unless his injury is much worse than we think-he's been able to practice some, there are ten games left in the season (plus playoffs) and he is a starter when healthy.

Not sure how the Pats could justify IRing Cannon if he's been in full practice and showing no ill-effects of the Cancer treatments.

My list of players likely to be involed in a transaction:

    Philip Adams - Cut
Ross Ventrone - Cut (signed to PS)
    Donald Thomas - Cut
Jeff Tarpinian - Cut (signed to PS)
    Sergio Brown - CUT
Gary Guyton (Dependent on Fletcher's health)
    Dan Flethcer - IR
    Ras-I Dowling - IR
    Josh Barrett - CUT/IR
    Antwan Molden - CUT
    Dan Gronkowski - Cut

The players are listed in the order I feel is the likelihood of it happening.. From most to least..

My suspicion is that Cannon was brought off the reserve/NFI list primarily so that he can get the experience of participating in three weeks of practice before going on IR. While, by all accounts, Cannon didn't suffer from the side effects of chemotherapy as badly as most, but it generally takes a full year for your stamina to be back to normal and for the cognitive impairment to clear up. You don't hear as much about 'chemo brain' as you do the nausea, fatigue and weakness, but it's very real, and you don't want someone on the OL who is prone to confusion.

I'm pretty sure you have until after your week 10 game, which is another 2 weeks. I believe the rule is that they can practice from week 6 to week 10, not that a clock starts to tick when they practice.

Good point. I didn't think to think about the ST impact.

Yes it does; the 3 week window starts from the time a player starts to practice.
A player may start practicing after week 6, and whenever he starts practicing thereafter is when the 3 weeks window begins.

Isn't it nice having players coming off injury related lists rather than going onto them en massé. Fingers crossed that will continue.

Umm.. Deaderick has played on special teams. And if Connolly can play on special teams, I don't see why Cannon couldn't.

I can understand if you say that the Kicking portions of Special Teams needs to be improved. But the Punt Return and Punt coverage teams are very good.

Pats are Ranked 9th in Punt Return Average.
Pats are allowing only 7 YPR on punts with is 10th in the league.
Pats are ranked in 18th in the league in Average Kick return at 24.2.
Pats are ranked 27th in Kick Return Average.

I think that a return of Edelman to Kick Returns and the Addition of Faulk to that team will raise that average up.

When looking at the kick return average, it should be noted that the Pats have a kick return of 10 yards and one of 11. Both were short kicks and comprise 10% of the kick returns the Pats have had. That being said, this is an area they could improve upon.

Questions for anyone. Not just you, Patspsycho: If Vereen isn't injured why hasn't he gotten even a single snap? Did he even get a single snap in preseason?

Because he was injured in pre season and after that, not to mention in a season with no off season OTA's especially for coaching up rookies, there just aren't enough first team reps to go around when teams are practicing game plans. Guys who were available including veterans clearly have leg up and until one of them is injured he isn't going to get a shot at replacing anyone. And it's also likely his pass blocking is at least suspect, and on a BB team it's not just about how well you run... Same deal for young WR's. And all young players for that matter. You have to be able to prove to Bill that you can do all the little things and execute consistently or he isn't using you over a veteran he even trusts to just do the right thing situationally even if not spectacularly.

Hard to answer a question that doesn't even get the facts right. There is no reason he hasn't gotten a single snap, because he has gotten a snap. Multiple snaps, in fact.
