Somebody had asked why the cutdown dates are so close, the answer is because in the 4th pre-season game you go with the back-ups, potential PS's and players you will cut come 9/1. No need in risking serious injury to starters and important role players who you as an organization believe will be part of your 45 game day actives going into the 1st regular season game.

ROSTER REDUCTION DATES
The first mandatory roster reduction date is August 28, two days prior to the Patriots' final preseason game. On that date, rosters must be reduced to 75 players. On Saturday, Sept. 1, rosters must be reduced to the regular-season limit of 53 players. On Sept. 2, clubs may establish an eight-man practice squad.
