It's 'smart' for him in a strictly self-centered strategic viewpoint but it does not exactly endear himself to BB and Dante, his bosses for the next few years. He also forgoes the team bonding that is another intangible initially forged in summer camp where players spend mucho time together.

If Belichick is so petty as to hold it against a rookie who's trying to get guaranteed money in his contract when the players around him have already gotten said money guaranteed, I'd suggest that BB get into therapy.

A rookie contract would still technically be a new contract...

As for Solder. Can't the Pats just do what the Browns did with their 1st rounder? Give Solder the first 3 years guaranteed, then make his 4th year guarantee a roster bonus. So in year 4 if they like him and keep him after a certain date, that money becomes locked in, but if they release him before the cutoff date they don't have to pay him another dime and he gets to try to hook up with another team.
