Didn't Mitt lose a lot of support in MI when he wrote that op-ed in the NYT (???) about how the government should let the auto industry go belly up?

Could have sworn I read that somewhere recently.

Not to nitpick, but the industry wasn't going belly-up, the companies were. They would have continued under new ownership. They weren't going away. Bondholders got screwed and the UAW got bailed out.

I believe the consensus is that they would have been liquidated had it not been for the bailout.

I can see how this could be a little deceiving, since it wasn't a public rally and the Detroit Economic Club isn't exactly an immense organization.

On the other hand, Romney's advance team is clearly terrible at their jobs and should be summarily dispatched. In some sense, it is rich because the pictures are emblematic of his entire campaign in a lot of ways (i.e. the candidate of last resort).

Link for that claim? Why wouldn't they be like other companies who went Chapter 11 and restructured.

If it's Mitt vs Obama he is going to have to dumb down the speeches. One of the reasons for Obama's success is that many of his speeches are geared towards an 8th or 9th grade education ... simple is better is the idea and it works. Mitt tends to get into to much detail when he outlines his plans ... we'll see what happens.

Seriously if it's Mitt vs Obama I can live with the winner ... if it's any of the other clowns I am :scared:

You mean someone else buys the plants and patents? Then we are in agreement. What would someone who bought all of that have done with it? Hmmm.....

Sorry, corporations are not a permanent feature of the universe.

You mean someone would have bought all those plants and patents and employed all those workers and continued to purchase goods and services across the supply chain at a time when aggregate demand had plummeted and there was no significant private capital to speak of? I'd say, in this case, context matters, and risking the collapse of one of the largest employers in the nation when the economy is inches away from dropping off a cliff would have been manifestly unwise.

It's fine to make that argument you're making, but I'd submit that most Michiganders feel otherwise. And for the purposes of this coming election, there's no question who has the winning argument.

New labor agreements would have dramatically altered the cost structure. What was there to liquidate? Someone was going to buy the inventory and real estate? I wonder why Fiat didn't think of that...
