I don't think anyone is upset with this signing. I also don't think anyone views this guy as a #1. Either way, the Pats needed solid depth at CB and this guy seems to be the perfect piece to the puzzle.

We don't require #1 CBs in our system. We require CBs that can cover well in zone packages and that's it.

Eh, I don't know. If he's so great why didn't Detroit resign him for the rock bottom price we got? Could just be putting some perfume on a stinker. Let's see what he looks like in camp.

I'd like No. 1 CB's in our system.

I'd sleep better on Sat. nights.

Probably because he wouldn't take vet. minimum to play for a bunch of stinkers and was only willing to take minimum to play with a great chance to win a lot of games. I suspect we'll all be very happy with him.

    #12 Jersey

What has Rod Marinelli ever accomplished in his career in the NFL to get excited about his comments regarding a player?

Now if Andy Reid,Tony Dungy,Bill Parcells,Jon Gruden or Mike Shanahan had said this I would be more impressed,They are successful and those types of guys are worth listening to

    Marinelli? - pffftttt

Oh I don't know, maybe because he's the head coach of an NFL team which means he has an eye for talent? Or maybe because he guided a Detroit (yes I said DETROIT) team to 6-2 despite an absent running game, horrible defense, and an aging second tier quarterback. Do you live to be negative?

You beat me to it....100% correct, rising to the top position in the NFL coaching world, where there are only 31 others is pretty darn impressive - no matter how you look at it.

    #12 Jersey

What does 6-2 have anything to do with the final result of the season? -What was the Lions record by January?

I guess Rod Rust had an eye for talent as well,He too was a head coach of an NFL team as well,I could go on

And I guess you have a better eye for talent than Rod Marinelli? Does ESPN say "hey, let's get PATRIOTSFANINPA's comment on Bryant!" Didn't think so. Until you're an NFL head coach, I'm afraid your skepticism and negativity will be widely laughed at, starting with me.

O.K. So if you were to ask 4 NFL Head Coaches about a certain player and you go up to...

Herm Edwards and he says the guy is an underacheiver
    then
Lovie Smith and he says the guy is not very good
    then
Norv Turner and he says the guy is worthless
    and finally you go to
Bill Belichick and he says the guy is a great player and has been his whole career and is recommended

Who are you going to believe despite the majority?

I say you are going to go with the coach with the best pedigree - and thats Belichick

You just made his point for him...if Bill b thinks that Bryant was worth signing, I don't really give a ballsack about your opinion. Bill's is good enough for me.

1.) Matt Millen is an NFL GM

2.) Dick McPherson was an NFL coach

3.) Tom Brady lasted until the 6th round of the draft

There is plenty of evidence that getting a head coaching gig, or even a GM gig, in the NFL does not mean that a person is perfect, great, or even good, at personnel evaluation.

Your responses do nothing to back up your point.

1.) McPherson's success in College doesn't mean he had an eye for NFL talent by any stretch of the imagination.

2.) Pretty much everone on the planet knew Mike Williams was a bad pick. Well, pretty much everyone but Millen. And, Detroit's starting record doesn't mean a damned thing. They've sucked during the entirety of Millen's tenure.

3.) There was plenty of tape on Brady. Round 6.

    1. MacPherson's success in college means that he had an eye for talent as a whole. But I used the college thing as a point of reference. The fact that he took a 1 win team to a 6 win team is impressive. It's not astronomical, but it is impressive. I still am not sure how this reference corralates to a coach's eye for talent but, hey, you added it in there, not me.

    2. Mike Williams? That is the best you've got? Mike Williams looked AWESOME coming out of college and had every message board on the internet that relates to football drooling from the mouth over his physical abilities. It is nearly impossible to forsee a bust with Mike Williams' attributes. Plus, we're talking about NFL HEAD COACHES here. Not GMs. Start a separate thread about GMs and I'll back you up on the fact that Millen has had a horrible tenure as GM.

    3. Did you hear about Tom Brady before he left college? How about Marques Colston? Believe it or not, most people had no idea who Tom Brady was. There might have been enough film on him, but he had not starred in enough games as a starter for coaches to sing his praises hence the fall to the sixth round. This isn't that hard to understand.

    4. Even if you guys don't trust the opinion of Marinelli, I trust in Belichick and if he thinks Bryant is a good CB, then that's all I need to here. Let me know when you guys have the same success as Belichick. Or if you ever become a head coach of an NFL team. Then I might just take your opinions seriously.

I am sure he is a hell of a guy, did they ask "Can he cover?"

Choosing between a scum bag, low life who can cover and a 'salt of the earth' corner who is average is a difficult call... very difficult.

I think the signings of Bryant, Sanders and Lewis moves the Patriots CBs from terrible to serviceable. Add a decent rookie into the mix and it could go all the way to good, which should be good enough.

Marinelli may have thought highly of Bryant but much more relavant was, no doubt, the opinion of Capers, who drafted him. Another Capers guy added was Sanders, IIRC. The change in this secondary is going to be as big as the change in the WR stable last yr., IMO.
