Did anyone see this abjectly moronic cowboy in tonight's Republican candidate forum? I have not observed pompous ignorance like this since the convoy trucker CB radio craze of the '70s. If America elects this anti-intellectual/anti-science/anti-progressive bozo I will be forced to do something drastic ... I don't know what. :bricks:

He was terrible tonight. On the other hand, Obama must be praying for this guy to win.

Perry makes Beavis and Butthead look like Shakespeare. He's outrageously moronic and so forthright about it. If he gets into the White House America is finished. Scary, scary man.

Well, it would figure this would represent the depth of your thinking with respect to your voting decisions.

I'm kinda with Jack here. I didn't watch the entire debate, but I saw most of it, and I thought Perry was very underwhelming. With immense hype, come immense expectations, and I don't think he lived up to them. He seems like a brash texas cowboy, and I don't think that's what the general populace is looking for.

Not to mention his comments re: Social Security.

That's a a disqualifier in the General Election.

I missed his reply to that, but saw a highlight. I don't know what the context of his reply was. He said something about the status quo I think, so I don't know if he meant as it currently sits, it's a ponzi scheme, meaning it needs restructuring. Regardless, even if it was his point, which is a guess on my part, that view will be used to mortify seniors in a way that will virtually guarantee he loses. I know little about Perry, and this was my first time hearing him speak, and he's a liability in a general election imo. He could still win, but Obama would probably prefer him to Romney. Romney actually looked very good tonight in the time i saw him. Better than i've seen him look in a long while.

What has he proposed to fix Social Security or replace it with? Or does he just want to do away with it? I don't get what he's driving at.

For once we agree even though the point he makes there is absolutely correct. He would be demagogue to death on it.

So you believe SS is an absolute failure? Really?

No doubt you'd think it's a Ponzi scheme. That's generally what people who don't understand what a Ponzi scheme is call it.

It is unsustainable due to demographics it will start running a deficit by 2017.

People pay in and their money is given to current recipients, in the next 20 years with the baby boomers retiring we will be down below 3 workers for each retiree,, BTW it was 14-1 ratio back when the program began.

I take it you are a young how do you feel about paying 40 50 % of your income to pay for SS?

that is in addition to all your other taxes?

    Doesn't work.

Almost nothing of what you wrote is accurate.

Actually it is pretty accurate or close to it. While I don't think the electorate will vote for someone who looks at SS the Perry does, or has, the numbers moving forward for the fund are not pretty. If you are under 50 you should really plan your retirement around the notion that SS may not be there for you when your time comes. It very well could be, but I would plan accordingly just incase. I'm in my mid 30's and I'm not counting on collecting from it. If I do, great.

I call him the media cowboy - he makes great news for the media to earn $$$ with. When the real meat of the election comes around he will fade away IMO.

I'm 31, and my dad was telling me years ago that I should save for retirement as if SS will not be there. He worked for the IRS and knew for a long, long time that the program was completely unsustainable as it exists now.

Ok what does.. "He would be demagogue to death on it." mean???

Sorry for being so obtuse, but do not comprehend the venacular in this context.

Perhaps the "massa" of this board doth speak a different language..
