Report: Pats sign DT Tommy Kelly

It's fair that folks turn back the clock to their most productive years after they've past their prime. If he does then great. More likely he won't and be what he was in Oakland last year.

We are talking about the 2011 season which was his best season as a Pro, not 2009. He has had one mediocre season and 7-8 solid seasons (he was injured for half of the 2007 season).

Now he might have hit the age wall, but let's not act like he has been mediocre the last few years. He is one year removed from a Pro Bowl/All Pro caliber season.

Don't waste your time. Brady2Moss never heard of the guy.

Right. Only the people who agree with the mob mentality on this board are knowledgable and / or know what they are talking about

DT: Wilfork, Kelly, Love, Deaderick
DT/DE: Armstead
DE: Jones, Ninkovich, Francis

Competition: Cunningham, Pryor, Bequette, Bernard, etc.

Don't really see the room/need to draft a DL at this point. The above looks solid with the right combo of youth and vets.

Eh. I don't like siding with Brady2Moss, but his play last season, to me at least, was indicative of a guy on the decline more than it was about a guy mailing it in. I wouldn't go so far as to call him a bum. He's definitely not bum status right now. Instead, I'll just say, "Welcome to the team, Mr. Kelly. Mr. Belichick, hopefully you still have plans to upgrade the DT position".

He was an alternate in 2010 there's been 2 full seasons since then.

Another meh signing, he's a bum. Maybe he'll be as good as Haynesworth:rolleyes:

A bum? haha, its an alright signing which takes DT out of the equation early in the draft.

Jeez, when did it become a bad thing to think positively?

Give the guy at least one day before trashing him.

R U a Knew Yawka?

I would still like to see an Abraham like signing to push Ninko and Francis for snaps at LE. But if this is our final roster for the DL going into the season, I'm not gonna feel too bad about it.

You're still wimpering about Wes and how "cheap" the Patriots are.

You're a one note piano. It's old already.

This guy may or may not work out. Nobody knows. Least of all you.

Based on some of the negativity I think some of you will be surprised when we hear what he signed for. There was said to be a good amount of interest in him; my guess is this won't be the minimum+incentives deal that some of you sound like you think he's worth. We'll see, I'll admit I watch very little Raider football because it's just not good football. But he should be a sizeable upgrade over the likes of Deaderick.

His best days are long behind him and at this stage in his career he's not an overwhelming upgrade over Deaderick/Love that people seemingly believe he is. Kelly's likely received minimal to no guaranteed money at all. That should be a clear enough indication that he's not a certainty from a roster making standpoint.

Don't fall in love with the hype of name recognition. His play on the field is average at best at this point. This is a prime example of training camp flier on a guy well past his prime. If he has any gas left in the tank then perhaps he's got a shot at making the team and having an impact.

Also for our draftniks, this probably means DL is no longer an early round target in the draft and we'll likely be seeing a WR and/or DB/OL along with a coverage LB in first 3 rounds based on the visits so far if the Patriots stay put with their picks as is.

He was an alternate in 2010 there's been 2 full seasons since then.

In 2011, he had 7.5 sacks (a career high), 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 INT, 5 pass defenses, and 41 tackles. That is an Pro Bowl/All Pro caliber performance. You don't actually have to be voted as a Pro Bowl or All Pro to have a Pro Bowl or All Pro caliber performance.

#Raiders source on Tommy Kelly: Helluva player at limited reps especially if motivated. Played too many reps in Oak (& price will be better)

Kelly is a great signing. He'll be a lot more effective with less reps on the field. Gives us another DT that can play on well in passing situations as well.

He was a stud in 2011 (I just listed his stats). He had a down year in 2012. No one knows if he has hit the age wall, had a down year, didn't fit into the Raiders' scheme, or something else.

Kelly arguably had two of his best seasons in the last three years and people act like he has sucked for years.

Chance for Wilfork to get a rest on passing downs now with Kelly, Armstead & Cunningham/Pryor/whoever to play as pass rushing DTs.

That might have been the problem. He would probably be best suited as a passing down specialist. He could be a stud in that area and something the Pats are missing.

Now that is reasonable.

Did he deserve his $6 million paycheck last year? Definitely not.

Does it make sense to bring in this guy who hasn't missed a game since 2007 at perhaps $1-1.5 million per year and could benefit from playing next to Wilfork? Maybe.

I haven't talked about Welker or the Patriots cheapness for a while just because that thread is always on your mind doesn't mean Im any more right or wrong then you Lord Shmessy:rolleyes:. Hilarious how your response to me is to bring up stuff that I never said in this thread.

Ooh nice snark there I'm the most clueless person on the board because I don't agree with you. Maybe you should realize everyone is entitled to their opinion.
