Another WTF in Skinsville. What I wouldn't give to be back in Virginia to hear the reaction to this.
Remember, the Broncos fired Shanahan the GM, not Shanahan the coach.
What an idiotic signing. So sad to see what's happened to that once proud franchise.
Donovan McNabb must be the luckiest man on the planet. Either that or he has hypnotic powers of persuasion. How on earth does he get a contract that size for that long?
...while getting benched?
What he said.
I was just thinking the same thing. I guess this means he's starting tonight.
this is a joke right?
That's what I thought. I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn't April Fools Day (Mike Shanahan probably had to do the same thing).
McNabb isn't worth $40M guaranteed. However, the length is not a big deal. He is about the same age as Brady and Manning (within a year of each).
This makes no sense. Shanahan just pulled him from their last 2 minute drill? The only thing I can think of is that Snyder/Shanahan got scared because some idiot media members played the race card and are trying to show its not true? I just can't think of any reason to merit this contract. Are we sure its not a joke?
The Redskins have now given out the 3 worst contracts in history. Sanders, Haynesworth, and McNabb
The Big Show boys don't think this was the work of Shanahan. If this was Snyder's handiwork perhaps Shanahan has his out and will quit? Not winning anything with that doughboy as your QB. First Haynesworth and now this??
Makes you appreciate the sanity found with ownership around here.
I love the NFL
Shanny should have his out after pulling dante instead of playing him the 2 minute drill. For the foreseeable future McNabb is the face of the franchise. Shanny will get used to it or someone else will.
Redskins ownership may be nuts but they do own the team. McNabb can provide stability.
The reality is that Washington is in the division race, having ZERO losses to the top teams, and having beaten Philly once.
Perhaps there was a locker room or player-coach issue.
Redskins ownership may stink, but it's their money and this was their way of supporting their quarterback and their offense. There's something to be said for that.
Yeah: dementia, stage 5.
Word is he could have gotten $83 million if he could have ran the 40 without the oxygen tank.
Let me just say that there are a lot of coaches out there who would like to have McNabb locked in as their quarteback. We get spoiled at the top of the AFC with Brady, Manning and Roethlisberger.
Shannahan will be gone, theres no way he approved of this. Snyder pulled the rug out from under him, typical DS move the Skins will be dead as long as he owns the team. Which is alright with me.
Incredible . . . Unbelievable. McNabb is THE most overrated player in the NFL. It's criminal.
Sure but at what price. FO fiasco.
MG, who else would give McNabb $40 million guaranteed now?
Seriously, it's another case of Dan Snyder negotiating against his imaginary evil twin Daniel Snyder. They're very competitive, they are always trying to outbid each other.
I'm down here in the DC suburbs and people are apoplectic about this.
The Early Lead - Poll: Is the contract better news for Donovan McNabb or the Redskins?
Yet another WTF moment for the Redskins.
HAHA this is funny
Good, that means they will be an average team and possibly make the playoffs just to lose in the first round. Only an idiot would sign McChoke to a contract with $40 mil guaranteed.
I agree 100%. McNabb isn't worth anywhere near the contract amount. However, this team is the 2nd most valuable team in the nfl, with the highest revenue. Snyder wants results and is willing to spend for it. And, no he isn't willing to risk losing team cash value by risking losing McNabb or by having a coach bench the face of the franchise for a scrub.
The fans should remember that this team was 4-12 last year!
Yes, Snyder went crazy. He made lots and lots of changes since the end of last season. He made good decisions and bad ones. He always seems to do whatever necessary to TRY to win this year. That is NOT the patriot philosophy, but it is the redskin philosophy.
And, this year they are in the hunt for the division. That's pretty good for a MAJOR rebuilding year. Surely, no one thought that the redskins would be competitive this year.
Snyder made a huge TEAM committment when he traded for McNabb. As expected, he has now overpaid for a long-term contract.
The fans should be glad that they have an ownership that want to do all it can to try to win. And they should be glad that they aren't cowboy fans.
McNabb's taken his team to a Super Bowl, and he's taken his team to the NFCCG on multiple occasions. Knowing that, I find it difficult to accept your position.
I'm inclined to agree with you on this - there's probably more than meets the eye on this one when the owner/GM and coach obviously are not on the same page...
But I'm not expecting them to air their grievances publicly and I think we can safely say that Shanahan will put the best players he can on the field no matter what the owners decide to pay them (or overpay them).
I think McNabb is someone worth locking in for a few years simply because there's not a lot of talent available at QB in this league - and it's impossible to predict whether the Skins will have a chance to grab a better QB in the draft or free agency.
This is sure one expensive insurance policy at QB, but then again it's not my money and there's no cap this year either.
I don't think this is Shanahan's "out" however - but that doesn't mean he won't get himself fired by benching his $78 million QB either... still Shanahan wants to win most of all so I don't see him going out of his way to bench an expensive player to make a point.
Separate names with a comma.
